From Thief to King
Chapter 1: The Reunion
Garnet didn't care that see was in front of the whole kingdom hugging Zidane for them all to see. All she cared about was that he was back, safe with her. She couldn't believe it. She had thought he was never coming back. It had been so long after all. Two years makes a person doubt things. Even though deep down you never really believe it's true. She had so many questions for him. Why so long? How did he escape? What happened to Kuja? But all of that could wait as long as he was really in her arms.
Zidane was so happy when Garnet ran to him. He didn't know how she would respond. If she had found someone else. If she would hate him for leaving her alone all this time without a hint he was even alive. But all that fear washed away when she ran into her arms. He didn't care about anyone but her right now. No one but his Garnet. It sounded so good to finally say that…
They were suddenly very aware of their surroundings. Everyone was clapping and it was hard NOT to notice. Garnet suddenly started to run full force carrying Zidane by the hand. Once they had finally come to a stop Zidane noticed they were in a beautifully decorated room. He assumed it was hers just by the unique taste that he had gotten to known. Elegant yet not girly with just a hint of the adventurous side. It was absolutely stunning, just like her.
Zidane looked into her eyes. Still the same beautiful eyes yet now with a hint of sadness and a large amount of love that only she could give. She had grown out her hair again and looked stunning, absolutely stunning.
"Zidane?" she said with tears coming to her eyes, "You have a lot of explaining to do but for right now could you just hold me? Please?"
"Always and forever, Dagger, always and forever."
Steiner and Beatrix, now married, knew they would need some time but this was ridiculous! They had stayed in there all night and Steiner would have bust the door down by now if it hadn't been for Beatrix who reassured him that they couldn't be THAT stupid to do what Steiner thought they had done. It was almost 11:00 though and the queen did have responsibilities. She walked over to the door and was about to knock when WHAMM! She got hit in the face with the door that Garnet had just opened.
"I'm SO sorry Beatrix let's go somewhere else though Zidane is still asleep and I really don't want to wake him up…at least not yet." Garnet said in a whisper.
"That's fine but may I ask why Zidane is still in there in the first place?" Beatrix asked.
"Well we fell kinda fell asleep and I promise nothing has happened…yet. O my did I just say that? I meant nothing has happened between him and I except for us sleeping in the same bed…I'm just making it worse aren't I." she stuttered.
"Don't worry I know you didn't do anything…foolish, and I know that this is his first day back but let's get him his own room. We don't want any rumors going around about you and him at least until you are married." She said to her.
"Married??? I mean well I hope we get married someday but I mean we're still young and I don't think that thought has even entered his mind and well…" Garnet rambled.
"Well you are queen and I haven't pressed this matter because of the fact that Zidane wasn't here and we didn't know if he was alive, but now that he is I must tell you that as queen you really do need to be married. Soon too. In fact by law you were supposed to be married at least by a year of becoming queen, but I knew you wouldn't agree because you didn't know where Zidane was…but now I must urge you to get married…and soon too." She said.
"But Beatrix…surely since he just got back the people can't assume we're going to get married right now. I mean I don't want to scare Zidane off. And I really don't think that it would be fair to him to force him to be a king you know. I mean think about it, what does he know about royalty except how to steal from them. I mean it wouldn't be right to just say `We're going to be married as soon as possible and you are going to have to live by rules now. We are going to teach you how to speak, tell you how to dress and act and you have no choice in it if you want to be with me.' It's just not fair."
"Fair or not it's what's going to happen anyway. Please don't be mad at me. I really don't want to make you do this but it's my job to tell you what is supposed to happen and right now the people need a king as much as they need you. Do you understand?" asked Beatrix.
"Yes, but I still say if we do this it will just scare Zidane…" she started to say.
"What would scare me?" Zidane said in a sleepy voice.
To say the least both Garnet and Beatrix jumped out of their skins when they noticed Zidane was there. "How long have you been there?" asked Beatrix.
"Not long, But I have a feeling that I should have. Now what is it that would scare me huh. And don't tell me any lies. You and I both know not much scares me so it must be big." He stated. He wasn't boasting. He was just being honest. And unfortunately they knew it.
"Well…umm…you see…"Garnet started." Well it's just that as queen I kind of have to…you know…get married soon" she said softly.
Zidane just stood there, frozen. "Umm…Zidane…are you still listening…Zidane…are you alright?" Garnet asked.
"I …I…I have to…umm....have to go to the…umm…the bathroom…yeah the bathroom. I'll be back in a while. Umm yeah." He said as he rushed past them.
"I told you he would freak out. Now he probably hates me!" Garnet sobbed as she ran back into her room.
"What's wrong with Zidane? He looks like he's seen a ghost. If he did anything to Garnet and was caught in the act I swear I'll kill him!" Steiner said as he walked up to Beatrix.
"No, he heard Garnet and I talking about him and asked us about it. And well let's just say that we were talking about the rules that we overlooked for a while but now that Zidane is back are enforcing." She said.
"You mean you were talking about…?" Steiner asked.
"Yes. And let's just say it didn't go as well as we planned considering we were going to let him get used to the idea and not just drop it on him like that." She stated.
"This is going to be harder than we hoped is what you're trying to say right?" he asked.
"Maybe. Maybe not." She said as she walked away leaving Steiner wondering what she meant.
