Chapter Three: Betrayal
Tifa sat in her room thoughtless. She couldn't believe Cloud came back and thought everything was going to be fine. Tifa heard footsteps walking past her bedroom door, and she knew Marlene and Denzel were getting up. Quickly she wiped away the confusion from her face.
Tifa was surprised when her own doorknob turned and Vincent's boots appeared. Tifa looked from his coal colored boots up his black and red uniform with gleams of silver here and there. Finally she came to his face, pale as usual, his eyes burning with a desire she had never seen before. Or… at least that's what she saw. Her eyes might be deceiving her, after all she appeared to be desperate.
Vincent took a slow step in the doorframe, and then hesitantly he turned and started to walk away.
“Don't go,” it was a whisper, but Vincent heard it loud and clear.
Vincent turned and looked at Tifa, then he walked slowly to her bed and he was just about to sit down when Tifa stood up.
“What's wrong?” Vincent asked.
“Not in here,” Vincent gave Tifa a confused look.
“What not in here?”
“We'll go in Cloud's room.” Tifa gave him a look of sadness knowing he wouldn't resist.
In Cloud's room Tifa locked the door and pushed Vincent on the bed. He was sitting back up when Tifa pushed him back down and put her hands on his shoulders to keep him down. Black curtains cascaded around Vincent's pale face as Tifa closed in on him. Tifa's hair was smooth on Vincent's face but Vincent was less worried about that.
Tifa's right hand let go of Vincent's shoulder and slid slowly down his arm reaching for his glove to yank it off. Tifa grabbed Vincent's warm hand showed its way to her shoulder. She did the same thing with his right hand too.
Now they were holding each other around the shoulders. Vincent was looking at Tifa curiously, her hazel eyes were different than usual. Tifa closed the very few inches between themselves closing her eyes ready to feel Vincent's lips.
When Vincent realized she was pushing herself on him he knew she was confused and she didn't really mean to do this. He knew she was just looking for comfort. But he knew she was looking the wrong way as well. Just as she leaned in for the kiss, he turned his head so that the kiss appeared to be more like a friend kiss. Most people would get lost in the moment and would end up screwing up their whole life in one night, but Vincent wasn't most people. Tifa was clearly shocked, and Vincent took action.
Vincent pushed Tifa a little bit and stood up before she could push him down again. Vincent grabbed Tifa's shoulders and shook her slightly.
“Tifa listen to me,” Tifa peered into Vincent's pale face. “I'm not the one you want. I can tell.”
Vincent put his gloves back over his long fingers and was just about to leave when the doorknob turned and jerked back. Someone was at the door. Vincent froze knowing there was going to be trouble, he was a man locked in a bedroom with a woman.
The lock was old would break under too much pressure and unfortunately Cloud was the only one who knew that. Tifa saw the door start to swing open, but she also saw Vincent right next to her apparently not paying any attention to her. Just as the door was almost open Tifa stood up as high as she could and softly her lips kissed Vincent's pale ones.
For nearly a whole minute Vincent stood in shock as Tifa clearly taking a stab at Cloud gave Vincent a deep kiss that appeared very real. Vincent came alive again and pulled away suddenly causing Tifa to fall into his leather covered chest.
“T…Wh…” Cloud was frozen in time. He couldn't control his body as he stood helplessly. “Why?”
“Um… I think I'll be going now.” Vincent tried to slide past Cloud, but he blocked the way.
Cloud couldn't think of anything to say or do.
Cloud's eyes locked with Tifa's hazel ones. He gave her a look of sorrow and regret, hung his head and walked away. Just like that, he never said anything.
As he walked away he left the door open, so that Tifa could see Fenrir start with a loud roar.
“Tifa…I'm not going to be the one stuck in the middle of this love crisis. And I'm not going to take the place of the bad guy.” Vincent's fiery glare turned cold within half a second as he looked at Tifa.
Before she could say anything Vincent left, doing that disappearing thing he seemed to be good at.

Cloud sat in the church dazed and confused. Why did he always run from everything?
`Inside I realize I'm the one confused,' he thought. `But which battles am I supposed to fight? I don't what's worth fighting for. Was I too late? Is she…is she with Vincent already? Am I too late?'

Tifa walked back to her room as she thought about what she had almost gotten herself into.
`I just wanted to be part of something strong and true,' she thought. `There has to be something more, a way to get this turned around. Save me…save me Cloud.'
Tifa looked up as a silver tear shimmered out of her eye and onto the floor.
Maybe things should just go back to the way they were before, when Cloud came home every once in a while and Tifa cherished every moment she had with him. Somehow things used to work better that way. Maybe they were just looking too far for answers. Maybe, but no one knew for sure.
