Ch. 5
Windows and Colds
----------------------------------------
At the Mansion…
“Lucrecia, we're back!”, Vincent calls out.
“Oh good, you found her…”, Lucrecia sighs in relief, “I was starting to get worried when you were gone for over two-hours and it started to rain, I'm so glad I sent Vincent to find you…”
Dietrich looked a little embarrassed, but no blush was visible on her face.
“You should go dry off and change into dry clothes”, Vincent says, taking the bags of groceries from her hands, “Before you catch a cold…”
“But this is… was my last clean uniform, what am I suppose to wear?”, Dietrich states.
“You bought normal clothes with you, right?”
“Yeah, but…”
“You have permission to dress in civvies, until you wash your uniforms”, he replies, vanishing into the hallway leading to the kitchen.
“Yes, Vincent-sir…”, she mutters, heading up the steps towards her room.
----------------------
A Few Minutes Later…
Dietrich comes down the stairs wearing a pair of faded blue jeans, a metallic-silver shirt under a denim jacket, she had a towel draped over her shoulders and using one side to rub the dampness from her hair.
She walks into the dining-room to find Vincent and Lucrecia sitting at the table drinking tea together, a third tea-cup sat not far from the two.
“There you are Dietrich, please join us”, Lucrecia invites, motioning towards a nearby chair.
“I would be glad to”, she replies, taking a seat besides Lucrecia.
“I hope you like green-tea with honey”, the older woman says, pouring the tea into Dietrich's cup.
“Thank you”, came the polite answer.
Vincent just lets out a tiny and harsh cough.
“You alright, Vincent?”, Lucrecia asks, “I hope you're not getting a cold”.
“Yeah… I'm fine…Just a little dust from the kitchen got in my throat”, he answers.
“Are you sure?”
“I'm fine, I swear!”, he reassures.
----------------------
The Next Day…
“Vincent it is 10am, time to get up!”, Dietrich says, as she knocks on his door and when she receives no answer proceeds inside, “Vincent?”
The familiar lump in the bed was there.
`Still asleep…', she thinks, walking into the room, “Damn it's cold, it is like a freezer in here…!”, she curses under her breath, as she rubs her arms trying to warm them.
She spots the window opened an inch.
`Why is he sleeping with the window open? It's almost 30°F outside!', she mentally says, walking over to the window first to close it, and notices a strand of long black hair; much too long to be Vincent's hair, hooked on a splinter in the windowpane, it looked fresh and unclean, `This looks like Hojo's hair, what is he doing in Vincent's room?', she wonders, as she walks to her superior's bed-side.
Vincent was laying on his side, the blankets pulled all the way up past his shoulder and covered almost half his head and face.
“Come on Vincent, it's time to get up sleepy-head”, she pesters, poking him in the head with her finger.
He groans and nestles deeper under the covers.
Dietrich's eyebrow starts to twitch in annoyance.
`I can't believe him! Still sleeping like this! It is shameful as a Turk!', she thinks, grabbing the corner of his blanket to pull it off him.
She manages to uncover his head and shoulder, before she grabs him by the shoulder to turn him to face her, but as she does he moans in his sleep and she sees his cheeks are slightly fever-flushed.
“Huh…?”, she gasps, putting a hand to his forehead and finding it extremely warm to the touch, “He's burning up…!”, she mutters.
Vincent rolls back onto his side, before he breaks into a fit of harsh coughs.
“So how is the `Boy' feeling?”, came the sneer question from the doorway.
Dietrich looks towards the door to see Hojo standing there, with a smile that made her skin crawl. It had only been recently that Dietrich had truly started to see how much Vincent and Hojo despised each-other.
“The well being of Sir Vincent is none of your concern due to the fact that he is under the immediate care of Lucrecia”, she states in a monotone voice.
“It is a shame his window was open all night”, he continued to taunt.
`So Hojo was the one who opened Vincent's window last night!', she mentally yells, “Don't you have some experiments to do, Professor!”, she snaps, trying to give him the hint to go away without saying it directly.
“Why of course I do, my dear”, he replies with that grin still on his face, “Take care!”, he adds, as he leaves down the hall.
Dietrich visible shivers from the creepy-tingle creeping up and down her spine from his smile, she notices her right hand was shaking for the experience.
`How the hell did that guy become a scientist?', she ponders, still freaked-out by Hojo's actions.
Vincent takes in a gasp of air, and when Dietrich looks down at him, his face was drenched in sweat and he was panting for air.
“Vincent…”, she whispers, taking her handkerchief from her pocket and gently dabs the sweat from his face.
-------------------------
An Hour Later…
Dietrich hastily puts ice-cubes from the freezer into a hot-water bottle.
(A/N: You can put ice-cubes into a hot-water bottle!)
“There, that should last an hour or two…”, she mutters, as she seals the end.
“There you are Dietrich, have you seen Vincent?”, Lucrecia asks, as she enters the kitchen.
“Yes, I've seen Vincent. He's in bed with a high-fever”, the female Turk explains.
“Is there anything I can help you with?”
“Thanks, could you bring up a glass of orange-juice for Vincent, even though he hasn't woken up yet, the vitamin C will do him some good”, Dietrich says, holding the hot-water bottle in her hands with a dish-towel draped over her shoulder as she heads out of the kitchen.
----------------------
Upstairs…
In Vincent's Room…
Dietrich carefully sits Vincent up and places the dish-cloth wrapped water-bottle onto his pillow, then gently lays him back down onto it.
She removes the face-cloth soaking in a basin of cold-water and wrings it out, then places it onto Vincent's forehead causing the older Turk to groan from the coldness. She then takes a thermometer and puts it into his mouth, and as she waits for it to finish it's job, she fixes his blankets; tucking him in.
She takes the thermometer from his mouth and looks at his temperature.
“102°… Not good…”, she whispers.
“How high is his fever?”, Lucrecia asks, as she walks in with a glass of juice in her hand.
“It's over a 100…”, Dietrich replies.
“That's not good…”, the female doctor mutters, setting the glass onto the night-stand, “Has he gained consciousness at all?”
Dietrich shakes her head in response, “No, he hasn't”.
Lucrecia walks over to Vincent's bedside; concern clearly visible in her brown eyes, as she brushes a stray hair from the slumbering Turk's face, he groans in his sleep.
His skin had taken on a sickly-pale shade of white that made his red fever-flushed cheeks stand out even more.
“All we can do is let him sleep, and hope he gets over this cold quickly”, Lucrecia says.
“Yeah…”

DemonGirl-Setsuna: Well? What did you think? Please review!
Hey, Ritalin?
Ritalin_writer: Hmm…?
Setsuna: What would you do if you saw a guy who looks, acts, and sounds like Vincent? Heck, his name is Vincent!
Ritalin_writer: I'd glomp him, then kidnap him!
Setsuna: And he is interested in you…
Ritalin_writer: Forget the kidnapping, I'd glomp him and take him home with me! Of course, he's willing!
Setsuna: Okay…
