Chapter One: Schoolyard Bullies Eat Mud!

Author's note: The story opens up very similarly to how FFTA does; I promise, in a little while, the similarity will end. ^_^

I hurled a ball of mud at Jeremy, and it splattered across his shoulder and face.
“I warned you,” I told him, tossing my long brown hair out of my face. “No pickin’ on the new kid or I’d get you!”
Jeremy glowered at me, trying to wipe the muck off of his shirt. “Maye, you better hope the stain comes out, or you’re payin’ for it! My mom just bought this!”
Jinx, one of my friends, threw a mud ball at Jeremy from behind. “Use some bleach and get over it,” he said, pulling an eyelid down at Jeremy and sticking out his tongue.
Jeremy’s mood did not lighten. “Both of you suck!” he cried, picking up gobs of mud and slinging it at both of us. Jeremy ducked. I didn’t even have to move.
“Your aim sucks, Jeremy!” I taunted.
Jinx picked up some more mud and got ready to throw it while I walked over to the kid that had just started school with us that day. I stuck out a hand to help him up, and he took it, smiling nervously.
“What’s your name?” I asked. “Mine’s Maye.”
“Fenn,” he said softly. “Thank you for helping me.”
I hadn’t more than glanced at him when the teacher introduced him. Up close, it was pretty easy to see how much of a shrimp he was. His hair was a dusty blond, and his eyes were wide and an innocent shade of blue. I imagined he’d attracted bullies at his last school, too.
“You’re lucky I was here,” I told him. “Jeremy likes to pick on smaller kids, but he knows better than to mess with me.”
Just then, a ball of mud grazed my shoulder and hit the ground not far away.
“Or, at least, I thought he knew better…” I turned and glared fiercely at Jeremy, who suddenly looked regretful.
“TAKE THIS!” I cried, picking up a huge gob of mud in both hands and sending it flying right into his face.
Jeremy flailed helplessly, and his two friends-- who, until then, had been watching dumbly-- ran to catch him. Unfortunately, they all slipped in the mud almost instantly and landed in a heap.
Jinx laughed uproariously. Fenn giggled, and I smiled in spite of myself.
Victory was sweet.
“Do you want us to walk you home?” I offered. “Jinx and I weren’t really planning on doing anything, and I’ve got an umbrella in case it starts raining again.”
Fenn nodded. “Sure. I don’t live too far.” He pointed towards the north end of town.
“Great!” I said, finding the least murky puddle I could and rinsing the mud off. “That’s the direction Jinx and I live in, anyway. I bet we’re practically in the same neighborhood.”
“Can we stop at my house, if it’s on the way?” Jinx asked, quirking an eyebrow in question and unconsciously brushing mud out of his dark hair. “I want to get my GameBoy Advance, and that book I wanted to show you.”
I nodded. “Then Fenn can see where you live, too. And if my house is on the way as well, you can see my house!”
Fenn’s eyes brightened. “Really? That’s great! I was afraid I wouldn’t make any friends on my first day…”
“And look at this, you’re bringing two home!” Jinx said, smiling. He started walking away from the school grounds and in the direction of our neighborhood. “Let’s go, before Jeremy and his friends decide to stop sulking and throw more mud around.”
The three of us left the school yard, chatting comfortably as if this was simply the way things should be.
