Chapter Three - When Nothing Goes Right...

His eyes opened slowly, the light drifting in from the half-closed blinds gave off a mid-day feel as Zell forced himself into consciousness. He sat up grogily, looking around and wondering where everyone had went. Squall's bomber and gunblade were gone, that meant he was in the Training Arena. He wouldn't have gone on a mission without saying goodbye, this much he knew. He decided he was still pretty clean from the shower he'd had last night, so he changed right into his normal blue baggy shorts and flame jacket. He decided to meet up with Squall in the Training Arena, hoping that he could steal the brunette away from his exercise regime long enough to stow in some private time. Zell bounded down the walkway headed towards the Arena, shadowboxing as he went along. On his way in he noticed Seifer standing at the entrance, his typical smug grin smeared across his face. "Nice day, isn't it ChickenWuss?"

Seifer had his arms folded across his chest, his usual grey trenchcoat swaying lightly as the door to the Arena opened and a few rather disheveled cadets stumbled out. There was one difference in his appearance. Seifer's normally well-kept hair was dangling down around his eyes, held in place by copious amounts of gel. He sauntered forward, reaching out a hand and grabbing Zell beneath his chin. "So tell me, which one of you is the bitch? You or Squall..." Zell's eyes flared with anger, swinging his right arm up to punch Zell in the side of the head. Seifer stepped out of the way and caught Zell's fist in the palm of his hand. Squeezing hard enough to cause Zell to wince with pain, Seifer hissed and leaned closer to Zell's face. "Is it embarrassing bending over and taking it up the ass? Or maybe you like being weak..." Zell cried out, his rage building but his hand aching in pain from Seifer's grip. Zell fell to his knees, struggling to free his hand from Seifer. Rushing footsteps could be heard and the next he knew, Zell was looking at Seifer's back as he hit the ground. Standing over the both of them was one very pissed off Squall. He'd seen the spectacle through the Arena sliding doors and rushed to Zell's aid, punching Seifer at the base of his skull. For a few moments Seifer didn't move, he'd been knocked out cold.

Groaning and rising to his feet, Seifer glared at Squall and rubbed the back of his head. "Hitting an opponant from behind? That's a new low for you, Squall." Zell had risen as well, flexing his fingers on his injured hand. While he loved nothing more than seeing Seifer knocked to the ground, he had to admit it was extremely unlike Squall to hit someone without fair warning. Squall raised his hands in a fighting stance, not responding to Seifer's comment. Seifer laughed, spitting on the ground at Squall's feet. Squall took that as a signal to begin and he swung his fist forward, missing Seifer's face by inches. The next ten seconds were both the fastest and longest of Zell's life. It seemed like it was over instantly, but as Squall fell to the ground, time seemed to come to a standstill. Squall's eyes were blank, staring at the ceiling. His hair fell around him softly, and Zell somehow noted that his hair was the only thing moving. Squall had stopped breathing. Someone was screaming, and it took Zell a moment to realize it was himself. He forgot Seifer existed as he dove to Squall's side, shaking him and yelling his name. Panicking, he picked up Squall over his shoulder and ran full speed to the hospital wing, praying Dr. Kadowaki was in the office. Seifer was still standing in the hallway of the Training Arena. His hand was still held out where he'd connected with Squall's chest. It hadn't registered yet, the gravity of what he'd just done. As he slowly returned to reality, his shoulders shook. His body collapsed, his hands and knees hit the ground yet he couldn't feel a thing. The scene played over and over in his mind, as he lay on the ground, shaking and staring wide eyed at the carpet beneath him.

It had taken several shocks to get Squall's heart beating again. The hit Seifer had delivered had knocked Squall's heart out of rhythm and sent his body into shock. He was breathing on his own again, but he still needed to stay in the quarantine wing for a few days. Zell stayed by his side day and night, leaving only to use the restroom. Rinoa stayed as well, checking in on Squall more often than any other patient. She'd make trips to the Cafeteria, bringing back meals for the three of them (making sure to have at least a dozen hot dogs especially for Zell). Her mind had been racing when Zell carried him in, his lifeless body dangling, his eyes empty and glazed. Rinoa was sure that she'd have nightmares of that image for years to come. That's why two days after Squall had been brought in, Rinoa found herself standing outside of Seifer's dorm room. She rang the chime several times before pounding her fist against the cool metal surface. She could hear music blasting from the other side. After what seemed like eternity, the door slid open and Rinoa came face to face with Squall's assailant. The music floated out through the hallway eerily. Perhaps it was the songs he had been playing, or the fact that he looked like he wanted to die that kept Rinoa from pounding the hell out of Seifer. Holding on to the reason as to why she was there in the first place, Rinoa walked past Seifer and entered his room, folding her arms and waiting for him to close the door.

He was a wreck. His hair looked like it hadn't been washed in days, his clothes were soaked with sweat, and his eyes were unmistakably red. Finally losing her composure, Rinoa screamed at the disheveled teen. "HOW COULD YOU? DID IT MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD KNOWING YOU'D KILLED HIM? DID IT MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE MORE OF A MAN? IT TOOK US ALMOST TWENTY MINUTES TO REVIVE HIM, SEIFER! ARE YOU THAT MUCH OF A HOMOPHOBE THAT YOU HAVE TO TRY ERASING THEM FROM THE GARDEN??" She finally drew breath, panting and clenching her fists, waiting for a reply. What she got was more than she had expected; She watched Seifer shake and slide down against the nearest wall, bursting into a fit of hysterics. He was stammering appologies, his eyes darting back and forth, then squeezing shut as he dug the palms of his hands into them to hold back the tears. Rinoa lost her nerve slightly. Seifer hardly ever showed his emotions like this, he'd kept up a masculine facade since the day she met him. Slowly she approached him, kneeling beside him and whispering, "Why? Why'd you do it?" Seifer's eyes rose to meet hers, his lips trembling. "I didn't mean to, it just happened. My head was killing me from him knocking me out, and everything hurt so much." Rinoa frowned, she hadn't known that Squall had knocked out Seifer first. "What else hurt aside from your head? Did he hit you anywhere else?" Her medical training began running through her head instinctively, prepared to assist him if possible. Seifer took a few moments before finally answering, ".....I wanted him first, Rinoa. Since we were younger, but he'd always cared more about Zell. Then when we all enlisted in SeeD, Squall would always object to being paired with me. Often enough, Zell's partners wouldn't want to be with him so they'd switch us. It was Zell that made him smile on those rare occasions he'd allow himself to do so, and I couldn't do anything but sit in the background and watch. It got to the point where I'd do anything to get noticed by him, so I started insulting them. It got harder and harder to control myself when I'd see him, so years went by and this is where it's gotten me....I hurt the one person I care about more than anyone else in the world."

At this Seifer's voice dropped off. His shoulders shook and his eyes brimmed with tears once again. Rinoa sat shellshocked before him. ~So this is why he's so hostile. He couldn't tell Squall he loved him, so his jealousy built up within him and turned him to the Seifer we all know today.~ After another hour of discussion between the two, Rinoa promised she wouldn't tell Squall or Zell what they had talked about. Though Seifer didn't want them ever to know, Rinoa's standpoint was that if anyone was going to tell them it should be him. She left Seifer's dorm room and returned to the hospital wing to find Zell laying his head on Squall's bed, much as Squall had done with Rinoa the year before when she was injured. She smiled softly and pulled out an extra blanket, draping it over Zell and dimming the lights as she returned to her desk to get started on the paperwork she'd let build up through the day.

It was the day before the Couples Ball, and Squall was finally released by Dr. Kadowaki. To keep his mind off of the thought that he could run into Seifer at any moment, Squall busied himself with what he was going to wear to the Ball. Zell, who was currently shadowboxing in Zell's dorm room, called out idea after idea and laughed when Squall asked if he'd memorized their entire closet. Yes, 'their' closet, because Zell had spent so much time walking back and forth between the dorm rooms he finally gave up and stored his stuff in Squall's spare bureau making one less trip for himself were he to spend the night. Zell already had his outfit picked out. He was going to wear a new pair of blue shorts with orange flames rising up the sides that matched his old jacket. Underneath the jacket he planned on wearing a black-mesh, semi-see through top he'd found for sale online while browsing the web during class. The Garden had finally docked at Balamb so he could actually get a delivery from outside Garden. Mentally noting he had to go visit his mom, he turned to see Squall's latest outfit and his jaw dropped. Squall was wearing a pair of long, black baggy jeans with a silky, black top tucked into it. The top's sleeves had been cut off, revealing Squall's muscular arms. Zell's eyes drifted over his lover again and again, noting that Squall definately was the sexiest man alive. His eyes rose up and stopped, his eyes almost squinting as he looked up at Squall's head, more to the point, at his ears. ".....Did you get your ear pierced????" Zell's eye had gone so wide, Squall was sure they were going to pop out of his skull. Nodding, Squall gently fingered his most recent ensemble addition. "Selfie did it for me this morning while you were in class, she said it would look good on me. What do you think?" Zell groaned and grabbed Squall roughly around the waist, throwing him onto the bed and straddling him. He leaned down over the taller teen and bit his neck lightly. Squall moaned, hearing Zell whisper "What do -you- think?" as he ground down against Squall's growing erection. Making quick work of their clothes except their boxers, Zell soon found himself being dry-humped by the gorgeous brunette. His fists clenched onto Squall's dark locks, begging him for more. Squall breathed heavily on top of Zell, grinding down against him and dropping gentle kisses on the blonde's neck. He wanted the boy so bad. But they'd decided to wait until tomorrow night, after the Couples Ball, for their first time having sex. That still left plenty to satiate their needs for the next 24 hours or so, and with that Squall pulled up off of Zell and inched down, trailing kisses across Zell's bare stomach. Not wanting to waste any time, Squall freed Zell's trapped erection from his boxers and slid his tongue along the length before taking it into his mouth and deep down his throat in one swift movement. Zell moaned deeply, his hands still buried in Squall's hair but now they were guiding Squall's head up and down, coaxing Squall into a faster pace as he felt his climax nearing. Squall's tongue swirled around the delicious member before once again taking it deep into his throat, knowing Zell was close. Letting out a moan that trembled through Zell's shaft, Zell cried out at the vibration and came in Squall's mouth. Squall swallowed eagerly, loving every drop of his lover's seed as it slid down his throat. Pulling away and licking his lips, he knelt over Zell and kissed him deeply, thrusting his own tongue into Zell's mouth, letting him taste himself. Zell moaned and shivered beneath him, his body weak with aftershocks. Squall's own hardness ground into Zell's thigh, he was desperate for his own release. Zell reached down and slid his hand into Squall's boxers as he began a fast pace that had the brunette sweating and whimpering in his grasp within moments. Zell pumped faster, whispering into Squall's ear, "You like that? You want me to make you cum, you bad boy?" Squall was moaning loudly now, begging, "Zell, o-onegai...." Squall bucked into Zell's hand faster and faster, listening to Zell talk dirty to him and practically going blind from the pleasure. It was over in an instant, Squall came in Zell's hand and arched his back, crying out Zell's name at the top of his lungs. Outside, three girl cadets that had been walking by hurried past the door, blushing and bursting into a fit of giggles as they rushed off to the Cafeteria.

Hours later, Rinoa entered the dorm room and pouted, her hands on her hips. Squall and Zell were fast asleep on the bed, and what's more they were both, for the most part, naked. She smiled and shook her head, crawling up on the bed next to the two and curling up against Zell. She'd been so tired from catching up on all her work, she hardly cared how much the sight aroused her or how badly she needed to shower. She drifted off to sleep beside the two.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next morning, Rinoa woke to a beautiful sight. Zell was facing her, his bright blue eyes smiling at her. "Good morning." Rinoa smiled, "Good morning." Zell lifted a hand and ran it across her cheek gently, "If I had known you were going to were going to spend the night I would have stayed up to meet you..." Rinoa shook her head, "It was a spur of the moment thing, I was just stopping by on my way to my room when I wanted to say goodnight. I couldn't help myself, you two looked so adorable I had to stay." Squall opened the bathroom door, walking out while towel drying his hair. "Ohayo." Rinoa smiled and yawned, stretching and curling up against Zell once again. It was then that Zell suddenly remembered the night before. "Hey, Squall? Last night, what was it you said in Japanese?" Squall had to think for a moment before his face turned beet red. He turned away and began rummaging for his hairbrush in the mess that was his room. "I said, 'Onegai'." Zell paused, waiting for more. "Well? What's it mean??" Rinoa giggled and propped herself up on one elbow, "When did he say that?" Zell turned to her, "When I was...um....." Zell also turned red, too embarrassed to answer. Rinoa sat up, pouting. "No fair, the least you two could do is give me some details, I got left out!" Squall, having found his brush, turned to her as he ran it through his hair idly. "Zell was talking dirty to me, I got more worked up than I thought I would."
Rinoa burst out laughing, covering her mouth and falling back against the bed. Zell frowned, "Hey, still in the dark here! What's 'onegai' mean??" Squall refused to answer, he'd began straightening up his room, something that seemed useless when you had Zell practically living with you. Rinoa calmed down a bit and smiled up at Zell who was looking to her desperately for an answer. "It means 'please', okay? Onegai is Japanese for 'please'. I can't believe you had him BEGGING, that's so cute! Did he whimper?" Zell cracked an ear-to-ear smile and nodded. Squall tossed a pile of clothes at Zell, "In case you hadn't noticed, Zell, you're still naked and you have class in ten minutes." Zell panicked, dressing himself hastily and grabbing Squall's shirt roughly, pulling him down for a quick kiss. He was just about to dart out the door when he doubled back and hopped onto the bed, kissing Rinoa gently and winking at her. In a flash, he was out the door and running full speed down the hall. Rinoa blushed slightly, sticking her tongue out at Squall when she realized he was smirking at her.
She sat up indian style on the bed, watching as Squall put away the last of the clean clothes and started in on the task of sorting out Zell's homework from his reports. Zell, even though he'd already graduated from SeeD, still felt he needed more training and had re-enrolled with Cid's permission. He retained his SeeD status and went out on active duty during emergencies, otherwise he attended classes regularly, something his mother had been particularly proud of judging by the tear-stained letter he'd gotten from her months ago. "So, what are we doing about the Couples Ball?" Squall turned to her, shruggging. "Zell and I made plans to go together when Selfie asked us to put up flyers. We signed our names on the roster." Rinoa got quiet, biting her lower lip. After a moment she spoke up, "That's cool. Did you pick out your clothes yet?" Squall nodded and started describing the outfits they'd be wearing, but Rinoa didn't hear a word of it. She was lost in her thoughts. The couples Ball was just that, for couples only. No one could go alone. It was Selfie's idea, she thought it would encourage the students to interact with one another. But that wasn't the only problem, if that had been the case Rinoa could have just gone as a friend with Dr. Kadowaki or one of the other interns in the medical wing. No, the problem was that this was a student function, and that meant that only -students- could attend, and Rinoa wasn't one of them. She wasn't permitted to attend school functions unless invited by a student. Squall and Zell had signed up together, and unless by some miracle someone invited her by 5 o'clock when the Ball started, she wouldn't be going. She snapped back to reality when Squall asked her what she was going to wear. Not wanting to ruin his evening, she said she didn't know. She couldn't know what she was going to wear to a dance she wouldn't be able to go to, so she wasn't lying. Still, inside she was sinking, her heart feeling heavy. Fearing she'd start crying and be asked questions, she made up an exscuse to Squall about having to get back to work and hurriedly kissed him before leaving. Instead of heading to Dr. Kadowaki's office, she went to her own room. Laying on her bed, she began to cry, not yet noticing the flashing light of an inter-garden communication on her personal console. The IC opened up on her screen, beeping and catching her attention. She wiped her eyes and sat at the desk, reading the message before her. It was from Seifer, and it was only one line.
"I'm suspended from going to the ball, have any plans tonight?"
She hesitated, wondering what she should do. Finally deciding that no one was going to invite her to the Ball in time, she replied, "None, I'll be over at five." She closed the screen and sighed, deciding it was time to go to work. She dressed quickly and hurried off down the hall to the medical wing. The message rang through her mind over and over throughout the day, "Have any plans?" When quarter of five rolled around, she finished filing the last of her reports and wondered whether or not she'd made the right choice. It wasn't as if Seifer had asked her over on a date, he just didn't want to be alone while the rest of the school partied, which was exactly how she felt. She left the office and headed towards the dormitories and towards Seifer's room. He'd been waiting for her and answered the door in one chime. He smiled, inviting her in and almost laughing at her expression. She was squealing in delight because Seifer had rented about half-a-dozen comedies, ordered in a pizza, and had set up a sort of picnic on the floor in front of his television. Rinoa relaxed, happy that she'd agreed to come over and deciding she wasn't going to be sad about missing the Ball.
