Final Fantasy - All Series Fan Fiction ❯ Love By Moonlight ❯ Selphie to the Rescue ( Chapter 14 )
Chapter Fourteen.
That morning. Zell got in around three. He crept up to his room and, making sure to step over the squeaky stair, he climbed them soundlessly. Opening his bedroom door, he snuck over to his bed and under the blanket. 'So I'm only getting two hours of sleep, I'll be up in time for school.' He thought, kicking his sneakers to the floor. Snuggling in he smiled. 'Seifer...' He thought.
....................
"Zeelll sweety, breakfast!" His mother called up to him.
Zell's eyes snapped opened then closed themselves back and he groaned into the pillow from the sunlight glaring into the window. "There is no fucking way it's six already." He complained into his pillow.
"Zelll!" His mother called.
"I'm coming!" He shouted, but rested his face back into the pillow. "Please just kill me." He mumbled. 'Maybe I could fake sickness?' He wondered for a second.
'Nah, that'll never work, Ma can spot my lies a mile away.' Rolling out of bed, Zell walked himself to the bathroom and went. After washing his hands he came out and staggered down the hall to the stairs.
His mother was putting breakfast down on the table when he walked into the kitchen, a yawn escaped his mouth and he scratched his back. "Morning Ma." Zell greeted.
She looked at her son, placing her hands on her hips. "Why aren't you dressed?" She asked him, seeing his mangled clothing still on his body from the other day.
"I uh.....don't know." He replied. 'Okay, that was lame, now what?' Looking around the kitchen he stopped on the plate. "Breakfast looks good, what are we having?" The little blonde sat down and started in on the eggs and toast.
Martha Dincht sat down as well and glared at her son. "Zell?"
Looking up he blinked. "Yeah, Ma?"
"Are you enjoying your breakfast, honey? Does everything taste alright?" She asked him and he looked down at his food as though something may be wrong with it.
"Yeah, it's great. Thanks." He replied.
"Good, good....and how are you feeling?" She then asked. He looked himself over and shrugged.
"Never better." Zell gave her the biggest grin he could.
"That's wonderful..." His Ma answered. Just as the martial artist was about to bring the spoon up to his mouth she smacked him in the back of his head. "Ow!" He cried out.
"If you're fine then why did you get in so late last night, don't you know how worried I was!" His mother fumed.
"But Ma I-..." He tried to explain but couldn't and was glad she cut him off.
"Don't you 'but Ma' me, you were out there doing drugs weren't you?" She asked.
"N-no, Ma. Irvine's and my studying went a little late that's all." He smiled as honest as he could, but she smacked him in the back of the head again.
"Now you're lying to me," She said.
"What do you mean?" Zell asked, hoping his best friend didn't rat him out. "I called Irvine's house and he said you never even came by," Zell looked as though he were a dear caught in the headlights of a truck. "so kindly explain where you were all that time?"
He thought as hard as he could but nothing was coming to him. "I'm waiting." She said crossing her arms.
"I was.....taking a walk and lost track of time." He answered, not even believing that one himself.
"Till three in the morning!?" Standing up she took her sons half eaten breakfast and walked it to the sink. "I hope you enjoyed this, it may be the last thing you eat for a while and don't bother going anywhere after school Zell Dincht, because you're grounded."
"But Ma?!" The woman held up a hand to silence her son and she walked out of the kitchen. "But I'm supposed to see Seifer again tonight." He said lowly. "....I could do chores!" He called into the living room after her. "Maa?....Oh man."

Later that day, Zell had taken the bathroom pass and stopped in front of Selphie's class and peeked through the doors mini window. "Selphieeee..." Zell was whispering, but she didn't seem to hear him. "Sssseeelllppphhhiieeee." He tried again, but still got nothing. A girl behind her looked up and saw Zell standing there flagging her for attention.
The dark haired girl pointed down at Selphie and Zell nodded. "Selphie." She whispered tapping her shoulder.
"Huh?" She replied seeing her friend point up at the door where she saw Zell waving to her and gesturing for her to come out into the hall.
"Mrs. Marino, can I use the bathroom?" She asked. The instructor looked up and nodded, Selphie jumped up from her seat and grabbed the pass from the desk then walked out the door into the hall. Walking until they were far enough away she asked. "What's up?"
"I've been grounded." He started explaining but she cut him off.
"Soo, you could have waited till after class to tell me that."
"Noo, but you don't understand I need your help," He was saying.
"For what?" She stopped walking and looked at him.
"Okay, it's like this....I met someone last night, well actually a couple nights ago and I think that....maybe we could really hit it off but I was grounded for being out so late with him and I really wanna see him again, but I can't do that without you."
"How can I help?" She asked.
"You can tell my Ma we're doing some big project in school, right." She nodded. "And you absolutely need me to come over because we're partners." He went on. "she can't say no if it's for school."
"But she can say do it at your house because he's grounded."
He blinked as though he hadn't even thought of that. "Oh...we could lock ourselves up in my room, you can imitate my voice right?" Zell looked at her hopefully, the girl seemed restless to the idea. Zell moved in closer with big gleaming eyes and a huge smile. "Come on Selphie, I'll give you a..." He paused to think. "Kisss."
"Mmmm," She bit her bottom lip thinking it over.
"Come on Selphie, kissy kissy kissy."
"Rrr, fine! But I won't like it, I hate lying to adults." She mumbled.
"Thanks Selphie, you're the best." He tossed his arms around her and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek, making her laugh. Zell ran down the hall waving over his shoulder. "I'll repay you someday, bye." She looked after him with a frown.
"This bad boy is gonna get you in trouble Zell." Turning back to the class she walked inside.
A shadow moved away from a door in the distance, but she hadn't noticed. Zell got on the elevator and road it down to the first floor, where his class was. He was bursting with a new rush of energy now, and couldn't wait until tonight. 'Seifer, here I come.'
His mind ran back to last night, right before he went home. "I want to see you again, tomorrow night." Seifer said in his ear, while they danced.
"Okay." Zell answered feeling the vampires lips on his neck, giving it a quick kiss.
"Same time and place." He whispered warmly into his skin. "Don't be late."
Zell smiled to himself. 'And I won't be.' Going towards his class room he banged into Irvine, who stepped in the way of his path.
"Mind tellin' me what you were doin' last night?" The cowboy asked.
"Uuuhh, what do you mean?" Zell tried going past him but Irvine stopped him.
"You know full well what I mean." He stated giving him a little shove back to where he was standing in the first place.
"Irvine, I already went over the normal bathroom limit, can you save this till after school?" The little blonde pleaded. Irvine crossed his arms but gave in.
"Fine, right after school." Zell nodded and walked by. Irvine watched him go and exhaled. "Little idiot..." He commented, then noticed something move in the corridor of the hall. 'Now who could that be?'
He walked towards the Quad area and saw the shadow jump then run further into the room. "Hey wait!" Irvine called running faster. The shadow moved just as it's name described but Irvine took the stairs two and three at a time, then he jumped out reaching for it and knocked it to the ground. "Alright, explain yourself." Irvine growled. "Why the hell were you spyin on me?"
The Upyr looked startled that the boy could see him, it hissed in his face and melted deeper into a shadowing form and slipped out of the cowboys grip and out of the school. "What the hells was that thing?" Irvine asked himself.

"Hi Mrs. Dincht," Selphie was saying into her phone. "I was wondering if Zell could come over to my house to help me work on a project we're doing in class." Martha listened to the girls explanation and saw her son in the kitchen eaves dropping and she twisted her mouth up with a nod. "Mhmm." She said.
"Does that mean he can?" Selphie asked hearing her mumble.
"I'm sorry Selphie, but Zell isn't allowed out." Ma was saying.
"Oh...." She paused for effect. "Than maybe I could come over, would that work?" Selphie asked. Mrs. Dincht seemed to be thinking it over, then she saw that her son was still floating around in the kitchen acting as though he weren't listening in on the conversation.
"...Well, I really shouldn't be doing this, but since it is for school, then you can come over." Selphie was cheering on the other end loud enough for even Zell to hear.
Rolling his eyes, Zell shook his head thinking. 'She lays it on thick.' He grabbed a banana and peeled the sides down, just as he was about to take a bite he froze and looked at it. 'Hmm?' His mind swept to Seifer's package and he smiled dreamily.
"Why don't you come over right now, you can have dinner with us." Ma suggested.
"I'm sorry, I'd love to but I can't. I have to do my chores and then pick up my little brother from band." She lied. "How 'bout I come over at eight?"
As the conversation went on, Zell stuck the banana in his mouth moving it in and out not noticing that his Ma had hung up and came into the kitchen. "That was Selphie." She said causing him to jump. "She said you have something to work on at school, so I'm letting her come over later so you can help her."
"Thanks, Ma." He answered with a fake smile. "I promise we won't make a sound." He assured her.
"I don't think so honey, you're going to make all the noise in the world, and I don't care if you wake the neighbors doing so. I'm not letting you leave this house tonight." His mother stated.
"I won't, I swear. We'll be in my room working until twelve."
His mother cocked an eye brow looking at him. "Eleven...." He weakened, but she continued to glare at him. "Ten thirty?" He asked. Thinking it over his mother nodded.
"And only till ten thirty....if you need anymore time she can come over after school, now go wash up for dinner."
Zell rushed off upstairs feeling like he was walking on air. 'Man, thank Hyne the world was made with trust worthy people.' He thought, referring to the scene that just played out downstairs. 'Only problem is what should I wear?' He wondered, closing the bathroom door.
