Loveless Act V
Chapter 2
To Save an Angel
He hadn't just…he couldn't have. He hadn't just thrown up on General Sephiroth! Of all the possibilities that could have spawned from him going out with Zack drinking, that was certainly not one of them! It couldn't be! He knew that Gaia hated him, but this was just ridiculous!
“Sir I am so…” But the positively icy glare he was receiving from the General stopped him mid-sentence. “Sorry.” He finished much more quietly, determined right then and there to never drink again.
“Well Zackary, what a catch, not only is he a blond haired blue eyed twit, but he has a special button that enables him to throw up everywhere for hours of entertainment.” Genesis said, and Cloud felt his stomach drop again when the redhead turned to him. “Tell me shall we issue your dis-enrollment papers now, or wait until we get back? Issuing them while General Sephiroth is covered in your vomit would be cause for a better story to the folks of whatever backwater town you crawled out of.”
Cloud opened his mouth, not entirely sure what he was going to say. The only thing he really knew was the harsh sting taking place at the corner of his eyes, and he absolutely refused to cry here! Thankfully, however, he didn't need to worry about a comeback. Zack took care of that for him.
“Stop being a dick Genesis.” Zack got into the face of the person second only to Sephiroth, actually having the balls to stare him down. “The kid is sick, alright? It wasn't his fault.”
At hearing Zack defend him, it seemed to break Cloud out of his shocked stupor and he jumped to attention. Immediately grabbing the scarf from around his neck and holding it out shyly to Sephiroth.
The SOLDIER in question stared down at it with much distaste. Eyeing the alcohol stained rag for only a moment before taking it and wiping down some of the reeking bile from his chest and leather pants. Cloud would have to say that this was positively the most embarrassing moment of his entire life.
He would give anything to take this fateful meeting back! Sephiroth was his hero, his idle, who he longed to be, and now all he would ever remember him by was the blond headed moron who had thrown up all over him! He didn't think he could imagine a worst way to meet if he tried. He'd say he'd kill Zack for all of this, but he had been the one to ask to be taken out, and so far the SOLDIER had been the only one to show him the remotest bit of kindness since he had joined Shinra. He could never be mad at a person who would stand up to Genesis, SOLDIER First Class for him.
Zack walked over to him, placing an arm around his shoulder as he pulled him closer. Glaring at Genesis as if he were just asking the SOLDIER to say something else. “Cloud let's get you back. You're not feeling well…Seph understands that.” He said kindly, but the glare he was still receiving from the General really didn't help to back such a statement up.
Nevertheless, Cloud dumbly nodded to his friend, wanting nothing than to be away from the hateful glaring. The worst part of all was that he had yet to speak! It would just be better if he screamed and called him a failure just like everyone else. …Then again, the thought of Sephiroth screaming at him didn't appeal to him all that much either. Just being in his presence was somewhat unnerving, he couldn't imagine if he was ever actually unfortunate enough to seem him mad…well madder. He doubted the great General was sunshine and rainbows after being drenched in vomit; the glare he was still receiving was proof enough of that.
“I'm sorry if we ruined your night Seph.” Zack apologized, never once looking towards Genesis even though his night was probably equally as ruined. “I promise I'll make it up to you. The next time you do decide to come out, the drinks are on me.” He winked. “That is if you fully intend to pay me back afterwards.” He gave himself a laugh at that, but he was the only one. His humor fell on deaf ears, and the tension around the four only seemed to heighten. As a matter of fact it heightened until you could actually feel the explosion...literally!
Cloud gave a cry as the bomb flew through the air, hitting the adjacent building and sending debris at the four of them. The blond barely had enough time to jump behind a few crates before fire exploded over the place the four had been standing, and he realized if they had acted any later they would have been incinerated on the spot. What in the world was happening!?
Screams had now taken the place of the once lively music of the square. People were running for panic as more bombs seemed to go off all around, and Cloud had to admit that he was a bit worse for the ware. The explosion combined with booze had completely disoriented him, and he quickly looked around, searching almost frantically for any sign of where Zack had went.
His vision was a blur of orange as fire seemed to have erupted around the entire sector, The smoke from the flames burned his eyes and made them water, as he struggled up from behind his crates. He tried to get a better view, only to duck a moment later as he narrowly avoided a slew of bullets being shot directly at his head.
“There's one over there!” A deep voice yelled, and he only assumed it belonged to one of the attackers. “Get the Shinra slime!” Looking around frantically, blue eyes searched for any form of escape. Now seeing that the attacks seemed to be closing in on him from every side. He knew that if he tried to make a run for it he'd be shot, and fire was slowly creeping up on him from behind. …Was he really going to die here?
Just as his thoughts turned from worried to frantic, he felt an arm grab him from behind, and he would have screamed out had a leather gloved hand not been placed over his mouth. He turned wide scared eyes to the side, trying to get a look at his captor, only to catch a glimpse of long flowing silver hair. Sephiroth?
“Relax. I found an escape route over there.” He said, turning Cloud's head to where he was motioning towards. “Follow me.” Was his quick command, already taking off and leaving Cloud to scramble after him.
Shots were fired the moment he left his hiding place, and he had to sprint after Sephiroth, all the while trying to avoid the gunfire that was now ringing in his ears. They ran towards a wall, and Cloud immediately was able to see the hole at the bottom that he was sure was Sephiroth's means of escape. Following the General's lead, Cloud dropped to his hands and knees, sleeking into the tight space and crawling to the other side. Ignoring the screams from the attackers behind them. They had seen where they had gone, and it was only a matter of time before they followed after.
As soon as Cloud reached the other side, his forearm was grabbed, dragging him out of the hole and tossing him to the side as if he were some doll. The blond was about to protest, but the words died on his mouth when he saw Sephiroth wield masumune, the longest sword he had ever seen. He held it above him, effectively chopping off the head of the attacker who had followed through the hole as if he were just slicing a carrot.
He couldn't help it, at seeing such a thing, he once more threw up, falling to his hands and knees as his stomach emptied itself. Mixing right along with the blood from the man Sephiroth had just decapitated without a second thought.
“They shouldn't be stupid enough to follow.” Sephiroth replied coldly, and Cloud could see through the crack how the additional men had begun to back up and look for an alternative route, which meant that for now, at least, they were safe.
“Thank you…” Cloud spoke softly, looking up from his place on the ground to catch the General's eye. “For helping me I mean. I guess I over panicked a little back there.” He said with a soft smile, which soon faded when he once more received that ever-present glare.
“I didn't do it for you.” He said coldly. “I did it because the last thing I want to explain is why a trooper of Shinra's military was a casualty in some pointless terrorist skirmish.”
“Oh.” Cloud replied, ego a little less inflated. He should have known better than to think that Sephiroth of all people would ever care about saving his worthless life. “Well, what do we do now?”
Sephiroth didn't bother responding. He just calmly cleaned his sword off, before once more placing it into its sheath. Feeling ridiculous on the floor, Cloud got to his feet, barely making it up in time to run after the General. Who had already begun to head in the opposite direction towards the entrance to Shinra.
Being much shorter, and a lot sicker than Sephiroth, Cloud had to practically run just to keep up with him, feeling completely out of breath. He glanced towards the SOLDIER, however, and noticed that he didn't even seem fazed in the least. It was unfair! He couldn't wait until he got the mako injections, and then he would have that never-ending stamina as well. As it was though, he was tired, he was sick, and he was still mildly sure he was still drunk, and such things did not make it all that easy to keep up.
“Do you know who they were?” The blond asked, finally being able to keep pace with Sephiroth's long strides. “The terrorists I mean.” He had been wondering who could have been stupid enough to blow up a civilian area, but he was new here, and he had no idea what Anti-Shinra groups were around.
Not bothering to look his way, Sephiroth turned into an alley, ducking under a fallen board as he made his way through the dark. “The red ribbons on their arms lead me to believe that they are a part of an Anti-Shinra group that have been giving us trouble for some time.” He frowned a bit, rounding the corner towards the other district. “If we could just get them into one place, we could squash them like the annoying bugs they are.” He scoffed. “Not that I blame them, however, if I were on the other side of things their cause could almost be looked at as noble.”
“Noble sir?” Cloud asked, not believing he was hearing such a thing coming from the poster boy of Shinra.
“Yes noble. It's not a secret the amount of harm Shinra technology is doing to the land, but that technology gives them power.” He glanced over at him; those glowing eyes never failing send a shiver down the blond's spine. “And with that power there will always be someone trying to take it from them.” He waved his hand in the air, as if it were a tedious realization. “This AVALANCHE is just one of a unlimited number of power hungry pups trying to bite at their master's hand.”
Cloud stared in awe at Sephiroth's back, never expecting to hear him speak like this. Let alone when they were sneaking through back alleys, trying to find their way back to Shinra as he was covered in the drunk blond's vomit. He had never realized that such a high-ranking military official could be so bitter about the company he worked for. Especially Sephiroth, because he was a legend. He was the person all hopeful youngsters looked up to, and he couldn't be so resentful about such things, because if he was who would be everyone's hero?
“I never knew you felt that way, sir.” Cloud said quietly, breath hitching in nervousness when Sephiroth looked back.
“Well why would you?” He asked in almost disgust. “We've never met before tonight.” His shoulders shook as he let out a cruel laugh. “Don't tell me you're one of those sad pathetic hopefuls that want to grow up to be just like me?” He said almost mockingly, not knowing that he had just succeeded in cutting the young trooper to the core. “Do you really think that just because you've seen the countless dolled up newspapers that have been released that you somehow know who I am?” He sighed. “I am no hero.”
“Yes you are!” Cloud yelled, not releazing he had started his rant until there was no way to stop it. “You think it's pathetic that people admire and look up to you?” He marched forward, in his insane mind actually having the audacity to grab Sephiroth's shoulder and spin him around. “How selfish can you be? You want to take away children's' dreams just because you don't understand them? In this bitter infested world you spoke about, shouldn't it be good to have a dream!? Would you really take that away from them!?” He sneered, letting go of Sephiroth's arms to cross his over his chest. “You're right…you're no hero at all.”
Cloud gasped when his chin was grabbed, Sephiroth squeezing a little too hard for his liking as he pulled his face right next to his own. “Don't presume to lecture me on things you know nothing about. You know nothing about my life, or the trials I've had to go through to become the so-called hero I am today.”
Blue eyes narrowed into a glare as Sephiroth stared him down, and this time he didn't feel that nervous apprehension. “You're right I don't, but I do know that I was one of those hopefuls, and now I feel nothing but disappointment. Good-job sir, you've really met all of my expectations.”
Sephiroth actually frowned at that, opening his mouth to reply, but he was never let to, because at that moment several things happened. Out of the corner of his eye Cloud saw one of those terrorists sneaking up behind the distracted General, gun completely poised to go off. Not thinking about the consequences, Cloud leapt forward, knocking Sephiroth out of the way of the shot, and taking it in the arm at the very same time.
He screamed, looking down to see a bloody mass where his shoulder used to be. Not believing the amount of gushing blood that was spewing forth as he added pressure. He knew he had to stop the flow. Sephiroth had already reacted before he hit the pavement; taking out the masumune in a split second and lopping the guy's arm clean off. However, that was all he was allowed to see of such matters, because with one last look at his bleeding wound his head started to spin, his eyes rolled to the back of his head, and soon he saw nothing but black.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Genesis was infuriated to say the least. He was on a rampage to kill any terrorist he ran into for ruining this nicely planned evening with Sephiroth. How dare they? They all needed to go to hell for their terrible timing. Now, he and Sephiroth had gotten separated. Even though the General got stuck with the blond hair puke boy, which made him happy, because Sephiroth deserved to suffer dealing with his little fan boy. Genesis was still irate at the older man for lying to Zack and making their date seem like it was pointless and most of all meaningless. Sephiroth deserved to have vomit down the front of him and probably getting drooled all over. But out of all the people in the world Genesis was now stuck with, it just had to be Zack.
Out of everyone in SOLDIER, Zack was the most annoying person he had ever had the displeasure of meeting, and for some fucking reason Angeal loved the boy. Genesis had decided to start calling Zack, `Puppy' because that's just what the boy was. Angeal's lost puppy dog that followed him everywhere he went. It was appalling and Genesis hated just looking at the man.
“Where did they go?” Zack called as he pulled his sword from the chest of the dead man in front of him.
“How the hell am I supposed to know Puppy?” Genesis growled. If looks could kill, the one Zack throw his direction would have been a straight shot right through his heart. “I don't care where they are as long as I get out of your presence as soon as possible. I don't want to be seen with the First Class Slut.” Genesis answered nonchalantly.
Zack's face turned red with anger as he turned to completely stand in front of Genesis. The red head saw it flash in his eyes before Zack even opened that pretty little mouth of his. He knew that he was either going to throw the boy out in front of a car or he was going to kill Zack himself before they ever got out of this.
“That's fine by me, poet boy; because there's no way in the life stream would I ever want to be caught dead with a faggot like you.” Zack spat.
Genesis gritted his teeth so hard that he could actually hear them grinding in his mouth. He stalked toward the smaller boy with every intent on throttling him, but didn't get the chance. Gunshots exploded through out the air and he dove forward landing solidly into Zack, sending them both smashing into the cement to avoid the shots. Zack grunted under him in pain, and Genesis couldn't help but smile.
“Thanks for breaking my fall.”
“Fuck you Genesis.” Zack groaned as he rubbed the back of his head that had struck the pavement, a bump starting to form.
“Sorry, you're not my type puppy.” Genesis countered as he crouched low on his feet looking for an escape route.
“Yuck, that's just disgusting. I would never want that if you were the last man on the planet.” Zack almost screamed. His voice laced heavily with disgust.
“Then thank Gaia, I'm not the last man.” Genesis sneered and grabbed the dark haired man by the bicep, pulling him to his feet.
He moved quickly across the street as guns were fired in their direction and dove into the secluded alleyway while pulling Zack with him. They both ducked and rolled forward, once again on their feet. They turned around to face the entrance. No one had followed them yet but they heard them coming.
“Let's move.” Genesis ordered as he moved into a run toward the other end of the alleyway.
Before they could reach the end though they were cut off by more terrorists and the way they had come from was blocked off as well. Zack and Genesis ended up back to back. Zack stared at the people that had followed them, while Genesis stared at the ones who had cut them off. They both were lost in their own thoughts trying to figure out a way out of this one.
“Dreams of the morrow hath the shattered soul. Pride is lost. Wings stripped away, the end is nigh. Such is…The fate of the monster. Even if the morrow is barren of promises. Nothing shall forestall my return.” Genesis whispered to himself.
“This is why you are SO gay.” Zack answered with a carefree laugh. “How about we light this place up with some fireworks?”
“Whatever Puppy.” Genesis spoke with a roll of his eyes at Zack's cheery attitude.
They both lifted their arms as they summoned on the power of their materia. Lightening bolts exploded from Zack's hand, taking down all three of the terrorist as Genesis released powerful fireballs, incinerating the two men in front of him. They both sheathed their swords.
“That's what I call well done.” Zack optimism held a firm smug grin.
“You are such a child. Let's go.” Genesis barked and started moving forward.
Zack sneered at the older man's back, but followed anyway. He really hated how Shinra had managed to inflate Genesis' ego to the size of a fucking meteorite. The man was so overbearing and hard to be around. Genesis stopped at the corner of the building glancing around. The streets were full of men with guns. A lot of civilians were littered along the pavement hurt or dead. Genesis frowned. It wasn't that he was so much upset about the civilians as much for his favorite part of town being destroyed. The place was ablaze from bombs that had been set off and blood that was splattered along the buildings.
He moved forward silently, trying not to alert the two warriors in front of him of his presence. He quietly pulled his sword from its resting place, and with unknown speed effectively beheaded both men, taking their spots so that he could survey the area without being too conspicuous. Zack came up close behind him. He rolled his eyes and turned to face the dark haired man.
“Puppy I know you love to be close to me, but I don't need you getting your dog breath all over the back of my neck.” Genesis snarled.
“Like I would want to be anywhere near you.” Zack contradicted. “I may just get that LOVELESS disease that you seem to be festering in that body of yours.” Zack almost patted himself on the back for that one.
Genesis scoffed at him, but turned away from the pest. There was no point in trying to talk to the boy because he was a complete airhead and didn't understand a word that was spoken to him. He scanned the area. It seemed that the terrorists were emptying out of the streets and heading off, probably to the next target. He rose to his feet and was about to turn away when he saw a flash of silver.
His eyes narrowed and he found himself weaving in and out of bodies to get to the other side of the street where he could have sworn he had just seen his lover. When he turned the corner, Sephiroth was making his way toward the Shinra building. Genesis let out a sigh, glad to see the General was all right. Yeah, the man was a god when it came to fighting, but that
didn't mean that Genesis didn't worry about him. He would never tell him that though.
“Sephiroth!” Zack yelled at the retreating back. “Where's Cloud?” The black haired man's voice was bordering on panicked.
Sephiroth turned to the sound of his name and that's when Genesis realized that his lover was carrying the blond shit head, who seemed to be passed out in his arms. Genesis pursued toward his lover, trying to calm his anger with each step. He didn't understand why seeing his lover holding the boy got to him, but it did.
Zack was already running toward them. Genesis ignored him though. He didn't care about the Puppy; all he cared about was why Sephiroth was carrying the blond nuisance known as Cloud. As he got closer, the boy stirred in his lover's arms and those baby blue eyes fluttered open. Genesis' feet slowed and he came to a stop at the expression that crossed the blond's features.
“Are you an angel?” Where the soft-spoken words that left Cloud's mouth.
Genesis' eyes snapped up to look at his lover's face. Sephiroth's eyes had narrowed and anyone else looking probably wouldn't have seen it, but because Genesis knew the man so well, he caught it instantly. His arms crossed over his chest as the blond kid slipped into unconsciousness once more. Sephiroth's eyes rose to clash with his and he bit back the harsh words that were burning on the tip of his tongue.
“What happened? Is Spikey okay?” Zack demanded frantically. That tore Sephiroth's gaze from his own and the General looked over at Zack. “Whose blood?”
“He took a bullet for me.” Sephiroth stated emphatically.
“What?!” Zack cried.
“We'll talk later.” Sephiroth ordered and turned away making his way toward Shinra.
Genesis followed, glaring at his lover's back the whole way. Oh yeah, they would talk later. Genesis was not thrilled at all. Sephiroth needed a reminder of where his place was and that was with him. How dare the General give almost a tender expression to a blond haired, snot nosed brat? Genesis was going to rectify this situation and he was going to do it real fast.
