Sephiroth's Chocobo
Chapter 1
Sephiroth sat in the stands watching the chocobo races. He was only
sixteen years old and already a soldier. He had his unbelievable
talent to thank for. The crowds cheered as a golden chocobo, by the
name of Gone Winds, won the race. He stood up and smiled, he won
another bet with Zack. Zack came over and scowled at him.
"That is the fifth time today that you won! How do you do it!?" he
pleaded.
"I study them and I pick out the best. Anyway, pay up." Seph said with
a grin. Zack sighed and handed over his one hundred gil to his buddy.
Zack was young and Seph knew that he would become a well-trained
fighter.
"C'mon, man, let's go check out the chocobo stables and see if there
are any more chocobo's other then the ones we saw today." Zack smiled
and followed Seph down the cemented steps. Once out of the stands they
raced each other toward the stables. When they reached the place they
slowed down, panting like dogs.
"I won-again." Seph managed to say.
"We- didn't bet on-anything." Zack replied. Seph smiled and they went
down the corridor looking into each stall. All the chocobo's that they
had seen were varied with different types of colors. They stopped at
Gone Wind's stall and peered in to see a man grooming the champion
down.
"Hello, I see that you have come to check out Gone Winds over here."
The older man said with a grin on his face. He was almost six feet
tall with blonde hair that was graying on the sides.
"Yeah, congratulations!" Zack replied. A man yelled out from the other
side of the stables.
"Frank! Come here, Mica is gonna give birth! It doesn't look good
either!" the man shouted out franticly. The man that was grooming Gone
Winds swore and ran out of the stall. Zack quickly shut the stall door
so Gone Winds would not escape. A group of people began to form where
Frank was tending to his Mica. Zack and Seph both sprinted down the
hallway and squeezed through the crowd. There was a black chocobo on
the ground breathing heavily. That must have been Mica, and she let
out a few groans between her harsh breathing. Seph and Zack watched
patiently as Frank tried to help his chocobo. The other man that
called down Frank to Mica's side told everyone to go on with their
business and that Gone Wind's prized offspring would be delivered
safely. Everyone nodded and a few left to tend to their own chores.
Zack fidgeted and Seph watched patiently; their eyes glued to the
mother to be. Frank shouted out for his partner but he was nowhere in
side. He looked at the two boys and said, "Go bring me some towels and
a knife. Burn the knife's edge before you give it to me." Sephiroth
nodded and Zack followed as they went to the main storage room. There
were towels everywhere and Zack piled up as many as he could carry.
Seph had a few under one arm as his other hand searched for a knife.
There wasn't any around and Seph told himself not to panic. Calm down
or we'll get nothing done. Seph finally spotted one too big to be a
normal knife; it was a dagger.
"What about fire?" Zack asked as he tried to maintain his load. Seph
Put his bundle of towels on a chair and threw the dagger into the air.
"Fire!" Seph commanded. There came a small flame that engulfed the
dagger. Before it could fall down and ignite the straw, Sephiroth
caught it with his hands and grabbed the towels. Zack trailed after
Seph and watched the flames die down in his friend's hand. Yet there
were no burn marks...how odd.
When they reached the stall where Mica was held, they gave the bundles
and the dagger to Frank. He quickly grabbed the towels and scattered
them around Mica. Frank reached for the cool dagger and went quickly
to Mica's side. Frank looked at the boys, "I want you to leave for
now. This will be a gruesome sight. But if you want to stay then keep
your food down in your stomach." Both boys stood where they were and
watched as the owner tried to help Mica deliver the baby. Half an hour
later, Mica gave out a cry and fell down with out a sound.
"Fuck Mica!" Frank swore and quickly used the dagger and went straight
for the belly. Sephiroth knew what happened, the mother gave out. He
felt Zack leave his side running straight for the nearest restrooms.
The man's partner returned and froze at the sight. When Frank was
done, he pulled out a silvery yellow chocobo. It wasn't breathing but
Frank didn't give up. He brushed the sac off of the baby and started
to give it some air. Sephiroth heard a weak wark from the baby's beak
and smiled. It would live... yet it would never have known his
mother...like I had never known mine.
"What kind of chocobo is that, Frank!?!" the man asked. Frank peered
closely at the baby and frowned. "Bill, it's a not a winner. It's
white, and white have no talent whatsoever. Mica is dead and it has no
mother. Might as well put it out of its misery." Frank replied.
"No!" Seph shouted and ran into the stall toward the chocobo. "You
can't, he is an innocent animal and it can feel pain as well."
"I'm sorry boy, but he won't last." Frank replied.
"Then let me take care of him, please?" Sephiroth begged. Bill sighed
and looked at Frank. Frank nodded and turned toward Seph, "Very well,
I'm just warning ya, if you want that baby to survive, then you must
take care of it all the time." Frank explained. Sephiroth nodded and
hugged the chocobo.
It was about midnight when Sephiroth and Zack returned to their
dormitory. They had to sneak in through the windows so they wouldn't
get caught. Zack went to his freshman room while Seph shut the door.
Under his coat was the frail chocobo. He set him down onto his bed and
covered him with blankets. The baby opened its blue eyes and looked at
him and warked softly.
"I know how you feel...I don't have a mother too. You and me are one
of a kind." Sephiroth whispered. He thought about a name for him, but
none came up. Finally he lay down on the bed with the baby curled up
beside him. What would he tell the soldiers if they found out he kept
a chocobo in his room...hell would definitely break loose. Seph smiled
and fell asleep.
