Chapter Three
(Irvine) I don't know what that little display at Xu's party was but I didn't like it. The whole way back to the garden I was worried about Zell. I didn't mean to get him in trouble I was just havin' some fun, putting my plan into action to get closer to him.
Oh Hyne I hope I didn't mess up their relationship, I mean sure I'd like them to break up but not that way. What I'm really worried about is how Seifer's reacting to our little display at the party. I didn't care much for the way he dragged Zell outa there.
"Irvine are you ok?" I heard Squall ask from beside me as we walked up the boys dorm hall.
"Yeah, yeah I'm fine, just a little dazed from the drinking."
"Oh, well get some sleep."
"I will, see ya tomorrow." I raised my hat to our little commander and waited for him to get inside his room.
I sighed out and looked around the empty hall before going to Seifer's door. "Maybe talkin' ain't the best thing to do right now." And it is late so I decided to just listen to the door- for what, I'm not sure. A sign that Zell's alright, that they're in there, anything I guess.
Silence.
I guess everything's ok then and they're sleeping or- nah I'm sure I'll see them both in the morning and everything'll be fine. After reassuring myself I walked back to my own room and got ready for bed. "Alone again."
I could have myself a nice little blonde body lying beside me right now. We could have had a great time at that party and be having our own party afterwards. Getting in bed I pulled the blanket up to my waist and lied down. I closed my eyes imagining those small strong hands pulling through my hair, running over my chest. I let out a shaky breath and opened my eyes staring into the still darkness.
"Keep dreamin' Kinneas, it'll never happen." Although dreaming ain't a bad idea. I rolled over getting myself more comfortable and started fantasizing my way to sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next morning I woke up a little moist from the sweet dream I had last night, so I went to the bathroom to shower. When I was dressed and pressed for the day I remembered the night before and wanted to hurry up and see if Zell was alright. I left my room and went to Seifer's door but paused. 'What if they're still asleep and I disturb them?' There's a good chance Seifer would answer the door, this being his room and all. I wouldn't want to cause a scene. I dropped my hand and backed away from the door.
"I'll just wait and see if Zell comes to breakfast. Seifer sleeps in anyway so I'll have him to myself for awhile." With my new found hope I made my way to the cafeteria.
I got my breakfast and found a nice table to wait at. It only took five minutes before I spotted my desire coming in the double doors. The fact that I was watching it the whole time did help a little. I waited for him to get his food and used the opportunity to look him over. He seemed to be walking fine, no limp or anything. I'm not saying Seifer would hit him or nothing' like that but can't be too sure.
When he had his food I called him over to my table. "Hey Zell, over here!" He turned in my direction flashing that adorable smile, that makes you smile back just as wide, and came over.
"When did you get up?" He asked me sitting down.
"Uh not too long ago." I watched him dig into a hotdog still amazed that he could eat those damn things this early. Why they serve them I'll never know. Seeing him slide that thing into his mouth put all kinds of nasty thoughts in my head. The two of us feeding each other, first the hotdogs then- well you get the picture.
"Hey, earth to Irvine." I snapped out of my fantasy world and looked over at Zell waving his hands in my face.
"What?" I said kinda rude but didn't mean to. Its just getting taken out of a mental fantasy can be really aggravating.
"Geez, somebody slept bad. Anyway I asked you what happened at the party last night?"
Oh right, you weren't there cause the all mighty mouth dragged you out in a jealous rage. "Well nothin' much. Present opening, dorky singing and cake. The singing was Quistis' idea even though Xu said not to. A little more dancing then we all came back here."
"Oh, sounded like fun." He said sounding a little sad rekindling my worry.
"You didn't miss too much," But I sure missed you. "So uh what'd you do last night? I mean you guys left pretty early." I tried to be casual about the question. I could see him hesitating or thinking of a good lie. Suspicious, hells yeah.
"Well, we just left cause Seifer wanted to, no real reason. I mean you know him and parties, he doesn't even like Xu that much anyway so..."
Bald headed lie but I wasn't gonna push the issue, not if it made him uncomfortable. So I ignored it and started finishing my food.
"It wasn't that bad though cause we had some fun of our own if ya get my drift." He suddenly said smiling at the remembrance of his night.
"Really?" I said faking enthusiasm. Like I'm trying to hear about my Zell having relations with that- that jackass. I mean, I like Seifer sorta but that's too much to take in this early in the morning. Hyne don't let him give details, although it would be nice to put myself in Almasy's place.
"Anyway it was great." He said eating some more. I looked to the door because it caught my eye when someone came in and who should it be but the devil himself. Seifer scouted the area for Zell and I sunk down in my seat pulling my hat over my eyes. Yeah like he really wouldn't recognize me.
He spotted us and walked over to our table with the eyes of a tyrant staring right at me. Zell looked back to see what I was looking at and as soon as he did Seifer put on this fake ass smile for him.
"Hey baby." Zell said leaning up for his kiss. Instead of sitting, Seifer loomed over the table glaring down at us.
"When'd you get up?" He asked Zell who turned back to his food.
"Uh, a few minutes ago. Why?" He answered.
"I was just hoping we could've slept in, I was gonna bring you breakfast." Seifer lied, I mean, told him. I tell ya something's not right about that guy. He looks at me smirking then pulls out a chair and sits down. "So Irvine how are you?" He asked really smugly and I wasn't about to cower down for him.
"Fan-fucking-tastic and yourself?" I shot back returning the grin. He didn't answer just furrowed his brow and turned away from me. He put his arm around Zell and started nuzzling the side of his face knowing I was watching. If he's trying piss me off, its working.
"Uuh.. I'm gonna go see if Squall's up yet. You know how he doesn't eat, wouldn't want him wasting away." I said as a desperate retreat before I did something stupid.
"Ok, tell him I'll see him later." Zell said and waved to me as I picked up my tray and got out of the seat.
"Yeah sure, see ya'll later." I said nice and cheerful then mumbled, 'Asshole' as I walked away past Seifer.
After dropping off my tray, I left looking back one last time to see the two of them in some kind of heated conversation. Another thing that didn't look right and it reawakened my suspicions from before.
"Maybe I'll go see Squall for real."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After Irvine left, Seifer grabbed Zell by the chin and turned his head so he was looking at him. Zell stared back into his eyes a little worried but decided not to say anything just yet. After a minute of silence Seifer let him go and Zell rubbed his chin from the grip. Thinking Seifer wasn't going to speak up he decided to after all.
"Is something wrong?" He asked quietly. Seifer sighed like Zell should just know what the problem was but he didn't.
"I mean after last night you'd think you'd get it, but no." Seifer said. Zell looked at him confused.
"What? Get what?" He asked even more confused.
"What are you stupid or something?!" Seifer practically barked at him making a few heads in the cafeteria turn their way. Zell felt so offended he put his head down and stared at his empty plate. Not sure what to say now.
"Look, I didn't appreciate the way you and honky tonk back there were getting all friendly last night. Dancing like you were- I don't even wanna think about it." Seifer explained getting more agitated by the minute.
"Who, Irvine? What, he's my friend. We were just dancing." Zell explained.
"Yeah whatever, look, I'm sorry ok but friends shouldn't get that close is all I'm saying."
"O.k. we won't do it again." Zell said with a little aggravation in his own voice. He started to get up to put his tray away but then paused. "Are you mad at me?" He asked biting his bottom lip waiting for the response. Seifer was quiet a moment then answered.
"No, not if you're not mad at me. You know for coming down on you so hard."
Zell smiled weakly standing all the way up. "No its fine. I understand. I mean if that were you with someone else I'd be a little jealous too." He left the table before Seifer could say anything else.
"Yeah jealous." He mumbled to himself then left the table as well joining Zell as they left the cafeteria.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Irvine) "Squall! Hey Squall you up?" I yelled through his door, banging on it incase he wasn't awake. Boy is he gonna tear my head off for this one, heh heh. Cute when he's angry...... I wonder what Zell looks like angry.
Before I could get a second thought in, the door opened and an angry Squall stood there giving a death glare worse than Seifer's. Then he shut the door back. I stopped it with my foot and slid inside the room.
"Good mornin' to you too."
"What do you want Irvine?" He stood in front of me, arms crossed, yawning.
"Well actually...." Wait a minute I can't just tell him I think Seifer's doing things to Zell. He might get the wrong idea and the last thing I need is for this to get out of hand.
"Well?"
"I just came to see if you were hungry." I said, making up a quick excuse.
"No, go away." He walked back to the bed and climbed in while I disobeyed and followed.
"Do you know what time it is?" He asked pulling the blanket over his head.
"Yeah, almost eight." I sat on the edge of the bed watching him.
"If you want something get it over with."
"Can't a guy just have a talk with his best friend?" I slapped him on the leg.
"Not at eight in the morning."
"Actually seven-fifty six." I corrected sarcastically.
"Whatever, what do you want?" He sat back up glaring at me.
Maybe I should at least tell him about the situation. I'll just leave out the whole, Seifer might be abusing Zell thing and me being in love with Zell. "Alright, I came to talk about Zell." I finally said.
"What about him?" He asked and started rubbing his head with his thumb and index finger, finally realizing I wasn't going anywhere.
"Didn't you notice how Seifer yanked him out of Xu's party last night? When Zell obviously didn't wanna go." I began.
"And?"
I sighed with aggravation. I shouldn't be telling him this in the first place but since I am, he could at least try to work with me.
"Look, I'm not sayin' anything, but Seifer's been acting a little crazy lately, especially when Zell's involved and he keeps givin' me the evil eye."
"Maybe he doesn't like you or he's jealous of the attention Zell gives you." He paused to yawn then went on. "It happens you know. Especially with new couples."
"Yeah maybe. I'm just sayin' I don't like it or the way he's treating him."
Squall got out of the bed and started walking around his room for clothes and whatever else he needed for the morning. "Well is Zell complaining?"
"No, not yet anyway." I scratched my head starting to feel like this conversation was going completely in the wrong direction.
"Then leave it alone. Maybe you're taking it the wrong way or too seriously."
Some help he ain't.
"What exactly are you and Zell doing that's upsetting him anyway?"
"Oh sure blame it all on me. I don't know we're just hangin' out, can't the man have a life without Seifer being a part of every second of it?" I stood up myself crossing my arms watching him walk towards the bathroom.
"Sounds to me like you might be the jealous one." He said.
"What! I'll have you know that I do not have a jealous bone in my beautiful body." Squall paused at the bathroom door, giving me a humored look.
"Alright, then let it go. Its Seifer, what did you expect. They've only been together for what a few weeks." He disappeared behind the bathroom door.
Yeah maybe, maybe I am blowin' things out of proportion.
"Finished?" He asked peering out from behind the door. I guess he wanted me to leave.
"Yeah thanks, see ya later." I said.
He waved a hand before closing the bathroom door back. I left his room feeling a little better. I mean, new couples have weird problems right? That's all it is, I'm sure and they'll be a normal happy couple eventually. Even if it means that I'll never get a chance with Zell. As long as he's happy in the end.
"Yeah I'll just keep tellin' myself that until I snap."
