Author's Note:
Hey, to anybody who took the time to read this thank you a bunch! Trust me; it took a long time to finish this. Actually, many nights of typing until four in the morning was worth it to get this done with enough time to add all of the pictures in. This was the first piece of writing I have ever submitted into a contest, so I guess I fit into the newbie category.
This fan fiction to me is much different than any I've read. With any video game series hours of game play are involved to gain all of these little tidbits of information that can be utilized for all fan fiction and argumentative means. Final Fantasy X is the most extensive Final Fantasy, therefore there was even more to sift through. When I first began this novella I had the idea to have the Al Bhed speaking in Al Bhed, the language created especially for the X series. I can tell you that it took hours of deciphering code on both X and X-2 to compile my dictionary at the back, and I'm still sure a few of the consonants are in the wrong place. Though, most of it is correct.
Some of the storylines I used to create The Ninety-ninth Sacrifice were only hinted in a few of the conversations of Final Fantasy X. I made up the names of both Sara and Mitsuki from what their husbands' and their children's names sounded like. In Final Fantasy X Cid's son is usually just called Brother. In one conversation Cid called him by a name, and I picked it out as Niisa. Also, I thought that this, as his name was appropriate because nisan is older brother in Japanese.
The character of Auron in my novella may be controversial, but the warrior's character in the game suggests that he is quiet because he is remorseful for an ugly past. Plus, Paine, a character introduced in X-2, fights, looks, and acts like Auron, so I have always thought that there was a huge possibility that she was his daughter. There's more evidence within the games supporting this than refuting it.
The storyline I used was the style of In Medias Res because I thought that it would best convey Braska's story as a summoner. Braska was shown in his summoner form, but then it explained his life and where his friends came from, and then it went back to how he had to go on a journey to save Spira. I originally chose Braska because I made a costume of him for the Anime Evolution convention in 2005, and felt that a character such as he deserved more attention than he received. More than once I was mistaken for Seymour, one of the major antagonists from X. I wanted to give Braska a human face that he wasn't given in X., to make him memorable.
The whole Sin situation is in my opinion hard to understand, or hard to place emotional reality to. I showed Braska a loving and kind person who was on a vendetta of revenge for his family under a guise of being a world savior. I also found it interesting to delve into the fact that he and Cid, the Final Fantasy staple, were brothers-in-law. Also how Cid was more muscular than even Auron was always fun to point out.
Every single one of the pictures I used in this novella were hand drawn and hand colored by myself. The characters were not chosen to be at the start of chapters primarily because they were highlighted in that chapter, but because their feelings and message of character worth were somewhat represented by that chapter's meaning. The pictures are as follows: I - Evil Eye; II - Braska, age 25; III - Sara, age 22; IV - Cid, age 30; V - Mitsuki, age 27; VI - Niisa, age 8; VII - Auron, age 18; VIII - Yuna, age 7; IX - Jecht, age 40; X - Chappu, age 11; XI - Lulu, age 11; XII - Paine, age 6; XIII - Hypello; XIV - Seymour, age 16; XV - Rikku, age 5; XVI - Wakka, age 13; XVII - Braska, age 33. The last two pencils are of Tidus and Yuna when they're both six and seven. The title page picture was done in the old style of Final Fantasy with my own twist of not penciling the Bahamut, but just painting it from the start. I hope you appreciate the Hypello in chapter XIII because to draw him I did a lot of research!
Another point that I enjoyed about this novella was that I was able to utilize Hypellospeak, of which I am verbally fluent. The trick is that all s sounds are changed to sh sounds and all th sounds are changed to zh or j sounds. Here's an example:
Normal: she sells sea shells by the sea shore.
Hypellospeak: she shellsh shea shellsh by zhe shea shoresh.
Sometimes sh sounds are placed at the ends of words for emphasis.
And, while we're on the note of pronunciation, there has been ample controversy over how to pronounce Tidus. In the Japanese edition, his name is Chiidusu. There you can hear the prolonged ee sound, not an i sound. Also, in English grammar, if an i is proceeded by a d and then a u it is not an i sound because the d is not a t. The sound is in fact an ee sound. But, Tidus is included as much as his father, Jecht, in this novella, so this is a moot point.
I would like to say that now I am thankfully finished, I can put my left hand on ice. Trust me, it needs it.

Braska is a normal man about to embark on a quest that would be documented for years after his death. Having lost his family to the monster known as Sin, Braska is vengeful towards the monster. However, there is only way to defeat Sin: to become a High Summoner
This is a novel about the last ten years of Braska's life. These ten years are spent during the ninety-ninth Calm, the decade in which the monster Sin does not appear until it must be defeated again. Full of sorrow, Braska swears that he will become a High Summoner and defeat Sin, no matter what the consequences.
That is, until his boat is set upon by Al Bhed pirates and his life is turned upside down. To become a High Summoner one must sacrifice their life to defeat Sin, and Braska knew this all too well. In the last decade of a life he knew was going to end, Braska comes to learn what it really means to live.
