Chapter Three

Irvine stopped off at the bakery and picked up some bagels on his way to Seifer's house. When he arrived he grabbed the painting from the back of the car and slid it under his arm. Then he grabbed the box of bagels holding it in his free hand. 'I hope somebody's home.' He thought. Going up to the front door he bit the little string on the top of the box then reached for the screen door clicking the locker down.

When it seperated from the door he pulled it open far enough to get it past him before kicking at the front door with his foot, his free hand reached for the knob turning it but it only rotated half way. "Fuck. He must be working." Digging through his pocket he pulled out the key and shoved it into the lock turning it.

"Hey!" An older man shouted. Irvine looked to his left next door and saw a balding blonde coming out of his house waving a fist. "Keep your damn mut off my property." He scolded the brunette.

Spitting the string out which dropped the box onto his arms. "Hey buddy it ain't our dog!" Irvine shouted back with enough attitude for the man to back down and believe him. "Yeah well... you just better watch it."

'Idiots. Glad I don't live here.. yet.' He finally got the door opened and walked inside. "Heey boy, you need something to eat?" He asked Lasso he circled his legs sniffing at the portrait under his arm. "Here's a switch glutton," Irvine walked into the livingroom placing the picture onto the couch, before going into the kitchen and setting down the box of bagels helping hisself to one.

Seifer didn't have any jelly so Irvine used the cream cheese instead. "Roof! Roof! Roof! Roof!" Irvine looked to the livingroom entry way and wondered who the hell the dog could be barking at. The brunette went into the livingroom and saw the dog standing infront of the couch looking at the painting. His fur was practically standing on end as he glared at it.

"What's the matter with you?" Irvine asked, stepping further in to inspect the problem. "What?" He asked the dog as though it could answer in clear english. Looking at where the dogs gaze was, Irvine smiled and reached over to the left corner of the painting. "A little spider?"

He held the arachnid in his palm and it walked around his hand to the underside. When it returned to the palm of his hand Irvine closed his fist around it crushing the spider dead. "Problem solved." He replied. The dog stared at the painting still, and Irvine finally reached up tearing the paper away from the hole that was already put in it.

Lasso lowered hisself to the floor and gazed up at the painting before moving his paws over his eyes. "Yeah I know I can't stop looking at it either." Irvine mentioned to the dog.

Light filled the hallway as the front door was opened. "Irvine?" Seifer called.

"I'm here." The brunette replied.

"I know I saw your car." Said Seifer walking in and past him towards the kitchen. He reached for the refrigerator handle and pulled it open. Skimming for something to drink he grabbed a can of orange pineapple juice. "What was that hideous thing on my couch?" He asked when he heard Irvine's boots on the floor.

Straightening up, he saw the look of disappointment on Irvine's face. But he only huffed out laughter. "Don't tell me you got that ugly thing at the auction?" He looked at Irvine's serious face and laughed a little harder. "You're kidding? I thought you were buying a vase."

Irvine shrugged. "I changed my mind, come look at it." The two of them walked into the livingroom and stood infront of the painting. Seifer didn't see it.

"It just looks like an ugly little girl and boy to me. And poorly painted at that." Irvine seemed taken aback by that. "It tells such a good story though. See, this little girl and boy had to raise theirselves after their parents went mad and killed themselves."

"Sounds phsycotic to me." Seifer poked the little girl on the nose. "Aahh what do you know." Irvine grabbed Lasso by the collar and pulled him to his feet. "Come on lad, let's go pick up Relm from school."

Seifer watched his lover walk into the front hall. His vision then returned to the painting and he cocked his head. 'Is that a watering kettle or a gun?' He wondered. Squinting closer to it Seifer backed away and decided to go into the backyard and cut the wood lengths for work tomorrow.

He headed out the front door to get the wood out of the trunk, then he took it to the side of the house opening the latch on the little metal gate that linked the houses together and he dragged the wood down the walkway between the houses into the backyard.

After getting his safety goggles and cutting equipment from the storage shed. Seifer got to work cutting the wood.

.......................

When Irvine and Relm returned to the house she was going on and on about the clay pot she was making in art class and how she would have rather done a cat or dog like Lasso or her cat at home Chibi. Seifer was sitting on the arm chair watching television.

"What took you so long?" He asked when they were fully in view. "Some idiot ran a red light and everyone had to move to the side of the road to let the goddamned cops go by." He walked across the room giving Seifer a kiss before continuing his story. "Then there was a pile up because everybody was in such a damn hurry to get back on the road."

Seifer was standing up pushing Irvine back as he did so mumbling. "I'm gonna start dinner." As he started to the kitchen he froze looking at Relm. The little girl was standing in front of the painting staring at it just as the dog had. Finally she opened her mouth and managed to say. "Where did this come from?"

Irvine smiled thinking that someone had liked it. "I got it from the auction today, isn't it great? It has a really sad story along with it too." He was about to tell her when the girls words cut him off.

"I don't like it. I mean, I'm no artist but this thing is poorly done and it lacks any kind of imagination." But she didn't move herself from staring at it.

"Nice to see we can agree on something." Said Seifer going into the kitchen. Relm continued to stare but blinked herself back to earth when she felt a wet nose poke her shoulder. "I'm gonna go outside to play." She grabbed Lasso's collar and headed to the door.

"Dinner's at five so don't wander off." Her uncle called from the kitchen. A faint 'I won't' was called back and she was out the door. Irvine quirked his mouth at the corner and reached for the painting. "I don't care what anybody says you're stayin with me."

Digging through the side table drawer Irvine found three nails and the hammer was on top of the television. That was the great thing about carpenters they always had something lying around for you to use.

Hammering the nails into the wall he stuck the top corners of the painting over them at the frame and it stayed up on the wall. "Perfection." The brunette complimented. He joined Seifer in the kitchen to help with dinner but Lasso began to bark distressfully in the front yard. "If it's another spider." Irvine was saying as the two of them headed for the front door.

When they were outside the first thing they saw was Lasso infront of Relm barking at her. The little girl was hunched over coughing with fluids of throw up coming from her mouth. "Shit." Seifer said inaudibly and ran over to her.

He squated down beside her ready to pick her up but she continued to vomit on the ground. "Irvine can you get me a blanket off the couch?" Seifer said and the brunette disappeared into the house before he could finish his words. "It's okay Relm, you're gonna be alright." He said soothingly.

When Irvine returned with the blanket, Relm had stopped throwing up and instead began to tremble violently. The two of them covered every inch of her in the blanket and picked her up bringing her into the house.

Once inside they sat her on the couch and Seifer rubbed her arms to try to warm her up. The little girl whimpered out tears as she clutched onto her uncles shirt, burying her face into his chest. "It'll be okay." He said calmly.

Irvine watched sadly, then went into the kitchen grabbing the pitcher from the coffee maker and pouring the hot water into a cup that held a tea bag and sugar. Then he brought it into the livingroom for Relm. "Here gal, drink this. It'll warm you up."

She reached for the cup almost dropping it because her limbs felt weak. Seifer took the handle and held it to her mouth letting her take a sip, regardless it being piping hot she drank the most of it in one gulp. Relms breathing slowed and she finally calmed herself to being still.

"I wonder what's wrong with her, she seemed perfectly fine a minute ago." Irvine said rubbing the girls shoulder.

"Beats me," Said Seifer just as confused. "Maybe there's a flu going around." He figured.

"I haven't heard anything on the news about one." Irvine stood up going into the hall to the stairs. "I'm gonna go fix her bed up so she can lay down." He stated. "Thank you." Replied Seifer. He continued to rock Relm back and forth holding her as tight as she held him, listening to her little sobbing whimpers.

"Don't worry kid, a night of bed rest will do you some good. Then you'll be right back on your feet pissin' people off again like you usually do." At least he hoped. Seifer never dealt with the sick before at least not in a way that he had to insure their health back to them.

"Don't make me have to call your mother okay, she'll have my head for it." Irvine's foot steps were heard at the stairs and he helped Seifer to his feet while he held onto Relm. "I'll make her some soup." The brunette said going into the kitchen.

Seifer went upstairs with ease and brought Relm into her bedroom lying her in the turned down bed. He pulled the blanket up to her chin and kissed her on the forehead. "You get some sleep if you feel tired, I'm gonna run out and get some medicine."

Just as he turned away to go to the door he heard her tiny voice saying something to him. "Huh?" He asked going back over to the bed. "Don...Don't leave." She whispered. Seifer sighed taking her hand and smiled at her. "Don't worry, I'll be right here."

"Thanks." She turned her head to one side and closed her eyes. Seifer looked around the room wondering if he should go when he was sure she was in a deep sleep. Irvine walked into the room with the bowl of soup but saw that Relm was already asleep.

"Want me to stop by the drug store?" The brunette asked. Seifer nodded and watched as his lover put the bowl down on the side table. He kissed Seifer on the side of the head and headed to the door. "I'll be back in a little bit." The door closed after him.

"Feel better squirt." Seifer said. Detaching his hand from Relms he walked to the door and into the hall.

Later that night after making sure Relm got to the bathroom, the two of them stayed in her room to wait for her to go to sleep before returning to Seifer's to get to sleep themselves. "Poor thing. I hate when happy people get sick, it's depressing." Irvine said stripping into his night clothes.

"Tell me about it. I hope she's better in the morning." He reached for his alarm clock to set it at six to wake him up. "If she's not you go on ahead to work and I'll watch her for y-..." There was a crash downstairs. The two of them perked up when they heard the sound.

"That stupid dog, you can't trust his manners worth a damn." Said Irvine getting up.

"You should put him in the shed, it's warm in there." Seifer suggested getting up too. "I don't think so buddy, my dog ain't no in the shed mut." When they were out in the hall they heard Lasso's yelps of pain and Irvine hurried downstairs wondering what the hell the dog was doing to itself now.

"Lasso you little..." The light was turned on and Irvine's eyes nearly fell from his head. "What the fuck?" Lasso was lying on the floor covering his face with his paws. But the strange thing about it was that patches of his fur were missing. The dog got up and ran over to Irvine when he saw him and Seifer looked suspiciously at the floor to where the blood tracks led.

"God, did you have to track that shit on the couch?" Seifer asked.

"What happened boy?" Irvine held the dogs muzzle petting him carefully. Seifer returned from the kitchen with a wet rag wiping up the blood before it could set itself in.

"Come on I'll put you upstairs with Relm." Said Irvine.

Seifer glanced at Irvine while he and the dog departed. He scrubbed at the stains furiously to get them out. As he moved on to another one Seifer narrowed his vision on a distinctive patch that looked like a small hand print than paws. Looking up at the painting Seifer noticed little bloody patches of fur on the little girls hands.

He stood up so that he and the painting were eye level. ".....Couldn't be." He shook his head feeling a warm chill go up his back. Glancing at the painting one last time Seifer returned to the stairs and went up to his bedroom.
