Chapter Five

That afternoon, while Relm was taking her nap. Irvine went downstairs to fix himself something to eat. As he crossed through the livingroom he saw the painting laying on the couch face down. 'Seifer.' He thought picking it up with a sigh. "What's with everybody and this thing." It was more of a statement then a question.

After placing the thing back up on the wall Irvine turned away to leave but his vision was still looking at the painting and as if it had tapped him on the shoulder he looked back at it. "Wait a minute...." He got closer to it raising his eyebrows in question. "Now wasn't the little girl.... on the left?"

She was now on the right side of the painting! Irvine wouldn't believe this though. I mean, no one every really gets all that great a look at anything when they first get it. It's like a CD, you're always blissfully unaware of how many songs you don't remember were on it when you first get it because mainly your stuck on a selected few.

"Still," He said outloud continuing his gaze upon the painting. 'I'm sure that little girl was on the left side.'

"Pleeease listen to me, it's haunted! The little girl and boy....they," The womans voice ran through his head. 'They what?' He wondered. 'Dammit! Why didn't she finish what she was saying?' Looking back at the painting, Irvine blinked. "Are you really haunted?"

He reached out a hand to touch it but jumped back when the door bell rang. "Hahaha, shit. Now I'm gettin' paranoid." He walked to the door and opened it.

"I've been ringing the bell for 3 minutes what were you doing?" Seifer asked walking past the brunette to get inside. Irvine closed the door and followed Seifer inside taking two bags from him. "I went shopping after work, I got stuff for Relm." He pulled out a little box that read: Thermameter, on the side.

"And I got some stuff for us," He took out a bag of oreo cookies handing them to Irvine, and the brunette laughed. "You didn't have to, I really didn't mind about that." Seifer shrugged and gave him a quick kiss on the lips. "I wanted to."

Irvine watched Seifer unload the groceries and he inhaled deeply before getting the nerve to ask. "Hey Seif'," The blonde glanced at him and continued to put the items away. "Yes?" He replied when he figured Irvine wouldn't continue unless he knew that he was listening.

"That painting, right? Have you noticed anything weird about it?" Asked Irvine referring to the little girl jumping from one side of it to the other. Seifer paused his actions a second to think about it then he went on putting things away.

"Aside from the fact that it keeps falling off the wall from your crummy nailing job. No." Irvine made a face at him and sighed. "My nailing job is fine.... it's the wall." The brunette retorted. Seifer folded the bag and stuffed them into an opened one sliding it under the sink cabinet.

"What's the matter Irvine, painting freaking you out." He wriggled his fingers at him making a low, woooo sound.

Irvine swatted it away and shook his head. "No, I was just curious that's all." Seifer pushed Irvine's hip off the counter so he could reach the pots underneath. "What do you want for dinner?" He asked him during his search.

"I don't know, I'm in the mood for chicken if your willing to fry." Irvine scratched the side of his head. "Yeah, can you make some rice in this pot." The blonde said handing him a medium sized pot.

They worked silently getting everything ready for dinner. Night soon fell and the two of them were having dinner upstairs incase Relm needed something, so she wouldn't have to shout downstairs to get their attention.

"I'm gonna take Lasso to the vet tomorrow to get those cuts looked at." Irvine was saying.

"And I'll take Relm to the hospital." Said Seifer taking in a fork full of rice.

"Poor kid." Thought Irvine aloud. "I hated being sick when I was a little kid and I was practically the same way as her, always getting into things, always gettin on nerves." He explained.

Seifer listened quietly while Irvine talked to him, until a sound caught his attention. "Did you here that?" He interupted. Irvine quieted and listened. ".....No." He replied.

"Ssshhh," Seifer held out his hand to silence him while they listened. It was still at first, as though there were no one in the house not even themselves. Suddenly a muffled sound was heard in the distance. "What the hell was that?" Irvine asked.

Seifer shrugged. "Maybe Relms going to the bathroom....Relm?!" He shouted. No answer. Irvine whistled waiting for the dog to come, figuring that it was him if not the little girl. Silence.

"Ow!" A faint voice shouted. It was a males they were both sure of it. Seifer got up from the bed angrily stomping to the door. "I'll bet it's those fucking kids again." Irvine got up as well. "I was hoping they'd come back." When he opened the door he saw someone run by. They were short.

It looked as though the intruder had just come from Relms room. Seifer went down the hall and opened the door. His niece was sitting up in bed shaking like a leaf in fall ready to jump from a tree. "Relm?" He ran over to the bed and wrapped the girl in his arms.

She screamed at the touch until she heard her uncles hushing words. Relm clung to him and started crying into his shirt. "Hey hush, what's the matter?" He asked her.

"They were in my room the little kids." She cried. Seifer thought about the little figure that had run by a minute ago. "Don't worry Relm, Irvine's downstairs taking care of it right now." He rocked back and forth with her. "Where's Lasso?" He then asked.

The white dog came from under the bed pressed to the floor whimpering.

"Lasso you chicken. You're supposed to protect Relm, not hide under the bed." Seifer scolded, it didn't matter right now he had to go help Irvine with the intruders.

Downstairs. The brunette entered the livingroom. It was quiet. He looked around with his eyes in the darkness. The moonlight was lighting only some of the room for him to see and when he went for the light switch it didn't click on. "Great time for a bulb to blow out." He griped.

Moving around the livingroom to find a side table for a flash light he bumped into something and took a step back to see what it was. It was the painting! It was sitting on a painters stand in the middle of the livingroom. Irvine was sure he'd hung it back up on the wall and who in the world would move it?

"That damned lady and her son. I'll bet they're behind this." Irvine figured. Hearing the stairs he turned around waiting for Seifer to join him but he wasn't there. Infact, the foot steps sounded more as though they were going up then coming down. Rushing around the corner, Irvine saw a sneaker breaking for the hall.

"Seifer, they're upstairs!" Irvine shouted. The blonde turned his head hearing his name and he told Relm to wait there while he went to check it out. Lasso, not wanting to be a chicken, followed close beside him.

Seifer stepped into the empty hall and saw no one. Looking around with his eyes he skimmed the hallway and listened silently for any sounds. Lasso growled in his throat and Seifer grabbed him by the collar. "Lead the way." He said.

The dog took off for the bathroom with Seifer following. He stood behind the door barking at it. Seifer turned the knob and flipped the light switch up as he opened the door all the way. "It's empty." He walked inside and looked behind the door then shower curtain.

Still no one. "What the fuck?" Seifer pondered.

Relm slid under her blanket to hide herself as though she weren't in the room. Maybe if she pretended to be asleep they'd leave her alone this time. A warm breeze blew against her back and she shuddered. The blanket started jerking downward from off of her. "Rrr...Rrr...Rrr." A voice grunted. When the blanket was pulled free the little boy crawled up the bed to her.

"Aaaahhhhh!!!!" Seifer and Lasso backed out of the bathroom and ran into her room. "Relm!" The little boy turned and looked at him then rolled off to the other side of the bed. Seifer ran over to Relm scooping her up and Lasso ran under the bed after the child. There was a dull thudding sound of Lasso crawling around.

He made a sound of pain, then again and the little boy ran from under the bed. "Irvine he's coming downstairs!" Seifer called. The brunette stood at the foot of the stairs waiting for him but he saw nothing.

The weird thing about it was that he was hearing the stairs being descended. "A-...." His oxygen caught in his throat after a warm burst of air passed through him. Irvine grabbed his neck gasping for air. Seifer came downstairs with Relm plastered in his arms and Lasso limping painfully after him.

"What happened, did you get him?" Asked the blonde. Irvine shook his head continuing to gasp for air. Coughing until he could catch his breath, he slowly started breathing correctly. Seifer knelt down beside him patting his back, asking. "Are you all right?"

Irvine coughed one last time and nodded. "There wasn't anybody there." He suddenly started saying. Seifer covered Relms ears and leaned close to Irvine whispering. "What do you mean there wasn't anybody there? I saw the kid myself."

Irvine shot Seifer an angry glare. "I know what I saw, and there was nothing there.... but I heard it, him coming downstairs." The brunette explained.

'There's no way.... Ghost aren't real.' Seifer thought.

'Could that woman have been right?' Irvine thought.

The two of them walked into the livingroom. Seifer still had Relm in his arms and Irvine had Lasso's collar. The painting was sitting on the stand in the middle of the room. The little girl and boy were still inside in their usual places. Irvine was right, the little girl had moved!
