Chapter 10: A Spy At ShinRa

Isolda was working on another report regarding the portable energy source when she heard the door open behind her. She glanced over her shoulder and saw her bodyguard walking in, carrying the unconscious president over his shoulder. She was surprised that even though Rufus must have weighed ten or twenty pounds more than him, the Turk carried him as though he was nothing but a bag of feathers. She rose to her feet and walked over to the gunman as he set Rufus down in the chair by the table.

`Is he all right?' she asked.

`He's sedated.' The reborn Turk turned to look at her. `Where's Tseng and Elena?'

`Tseng went to talk to Reno and Rude,' said Isolda. She cringed. `I think this whole strange mess started with them.'

Vincent nodded and stepped aside so the young scientist could check on the unconscious president. She knelt down and checked his vitals before nodding in satisfaction.

`He'll be out for a while. When he wakes up, he probably won't remember anything that happened.' She glanced at Vincent with a smirk. `Though you won't forget a single bit of it.'

Vincent didn't say anything, but he shook his head. Isolda rose to her feet and went back to her computer in the far corner of the room. Soon, the lab was filled with the clicking sound of her fingers dancing around the keyboard as she typed furiously to get the report done. Vincent turned to her, watching her as she worked.

`You going to watch me like a hawk again?' she asked dryly, but her tone was edged with hurt. Vincent looked at her.

`Actually, I was going to ask what you were working on.'

`Just another report on the mako containment orb,' she said. `Not that you care about that. All you care about is doing your job. And apparently watching my every move.'

Vincent frowned at her. `Is that what you think?'

`Oh, come on, Hunter!' She stopped typing and turned to glare at him. `You were just fine when we first started working together. Now you act like I'm a spy or something and you're trying to find out what my plans are.'

The reborn Turk glared at her. She had hit the mark in the gold. `I am only doing my job, Isolda. Nothing more.'

`Your job is to protect me. Not spy on me.'

`Part of my job is ensuring your safety. If that means I have to keep an eye on you, then that is what I'll do.'

`Keeping an eye on me doesn't mean burning holes through me with your eyes.'

`I was assigned to protect you.'

`Then stop trying to protect yourself from me!' She rose to her feet and stalked out of the lab, leaving Vincent alone. He heard the door slam and sighed. This assignment was wearing on him and he wondered just how long he would have to stay here.

The word Deep Ground on the computer screen caught his eye. He frowned and walked over to her console, his interest peaked. He glanced around to see if there was anyone else around and that the president was really unconscious before turning to the screen. There was a folder on the screen that was labelled RECENT ATTACKS. He pressed a key on the keyboard and the file opened to reveal a lengthy document. His crimson eyes darted across the screen as he read. His lips parted in surprise and his suspicions grew stronger.

Glancing around to see if there was anyone around (and if the president had woken up yet), Vincent printed off the document and closed the file before Isolda began to wonder why he was still in the lab. He picked up the freshly printed pages and slipped into his room, shutting the door behind him.

He sat down on the bed and leafed through the document, his eyes narrowed as he read.

He picked up his phone and punched in a number and raised it to his ear. He waited as the connection was established.

Reeve picked up on the fifth ring.

`Vincent?'

`Five rings, Reeve. You all right?'

`I'm fine, I had to finish a briefing. What's happening?'

`I think you're right about there being a spy at ShinRa,' said the gunman. `I found a file on Dr. Charis' computer. It lists everything on Deep Ground's current activities and the recent attacks you told me about.'

Reeve sounded thunderstruck. `What? Are you sure?'

`I'm sure,' said the gunman. `It also has information on the weapon they're using.'

`What's it say?'

`Not much. Just everything we know about it. But there seems to be a reference to an ancient legend that was told as a child's fairytale. But it doesn't say which one.'

`I'll look into it,' said Reeve. There was a pause. `Hmm, that's odd.'

Vincent frowned. `What is it?'

`I just received information concerning Deep Ground's next move,' said the WRO Commissioner. `It seems they're preparing to launch an attack, somewhere in the vicinity'

Vincent's frown deepened. `Could it be they're trying to attack the WRO again?' He vividly remembered the attack on his friend's headquarters, and the destruction with which Azul the Cerulean had wreaked.

`It doesn't say,' said Reeve. `But don't worry, Vincent. I've already taken the precautions to ensure there is not a repeat of the last attack.'

Vincent released the breath he didn't realise he'd been holding. `Good.'

`But Vincent. I want you to careful. Dr. Charis may not know that you have a copy of that document, but it's best to act as normally as possible around her so as not to arouse suspicion.'

`I know,' said the gunslinger. He heard a low groan in the lab. `I have to go. The president's waking up and I don't want another song and dance.'

`What?' Reeve sounded confused and Vincent realised that he had no idea what he was on about.
`I'll explain later.' Vincent ended the connected and flipped his phone shut. He pocketed it and hid the document before rising to his feet and walking out into the lab.
