Chapter 5.
~
Toby squatted on the grass, two girls hung around him both brunettes who had tagged along to see the commander in action.
“We’ll be cheering for you Yuki.” One of them said.
“We will? But I wanted to see commander sexy win.”
The dark haired cadet gave her a look. “Thanks, you’re supposed to be my support remember?”
Toby hopped to his feet. “So where’s Mister tall dark and handsome then?”
“He’ll be here.” Yuki glanced nervously at the entrance. He wore black loose trousers and he had been wearing a black vest, which now hung over a low tree branch.
“Maybe he stood you up.”
At that moment Squall walked through the metal doors, stopping and glancing around.
“Squall! Over here!”
The brunette started in their direction, nodding at Yuki in greeting then glanced slightly nervously- Yuki noticed- at the others.
“I brought a little- support.” He gestured to the three cadets. “That’s Toby.”
“I remember.” Squall muttered.
“And that’s Mandy and Cindy.” They smiled and Squall just nodded in greeting, watching them retreat to a safe distance.
“Don’t mind do you?”
“Mind?”
Yuki gestured to his friends.
Squall shook his head then pulled his shirt off over his head to match Yuki.
Cindy’s mouth dropped. “God.”
“He is, isn’t he?” Toby stared.
Yuki smirked, knowing exactly what they were thinking.
Squall tossed his shirt away and turned back to see everyone staring at him, he frowned in confusion. “What?”
Yuki chuckled drawing his sword. “Never mind.”
Squall shrugged, drawing Lionheart. “Ready?”
“’Course.” He grinned confidently. “And don’t hold back.”
Squall scoffed. “Don’t get so cocky.” Squall lunged forward delivering a few blows that the cadet easily blocked, still grinning and hopping out of the way.
“Come on.” He came back with a few blows of his own. “Stop-holding-back!” He punctured the words between blows. “Give me a real fight.”
The brunette ducked under a sloppy ditch effort swipe of Yuki’s blade. “A real fight.” He agreed, rising quickly from his crouched position, rushing the cadet, catching him by surprise but still managed to block most of Squall’s blows and duck out of the way, getting some distance between the two of them.
“I wasn’t ready.” He complained.
Squall smirked. “Right.”
Yuki ducked under Squall’s blade, pushing the shorter brunette back with fast movements until Squall brought his gunblade down low and Yuki jumped it but his feet caught the edge of it and he stumbled.
Squall’s hand landed on his hand, forcing him to drop the grip on his blade.
“Ah shit.” He rolled onto his back only to have Squall drop onto his waist, Lionheart held to his throat.
Faintly he was aware of cheering. Damn fans, they were supposed to be on his side.
“You’re dead.” Squall told him.
“I am? Does that mean I’m in heaven? Are you an angel?”
Squall scoffed.
“Your fans seem happy that you lost.”
“They don’t care about me they just came to stare at your arse.”
Squall frowned, trying to ignore the blush that slowly flushed his cheeks.
“You’re cute when you blush.”
Squall blinked. “You say the most ridiculous things.”
Yuki grinned. “Thank you.” He picked up the griever pendent from Squall’s chest and used it to pull Squall in closer.
“What ARE you doing?” Squall asked in an alarmed voice.
“I’m getting a better look at you.”
The cheering had gone quiet, Squall looked over at the group of cadets that were staring at them, whispering.
“You’re friends are staring at us.” Squall said, without taking his eyes of the little group.
He turned to Yuki when he realized he was close enough to the other man to feel warm breath on his cheek, he turned to look at the cadet, flinching when he bumped noses with the taller man.
Yuki chuckled.
“Get off.”
“Huh?”
Squall grabbed hold of the his chain and started to pull it from Yuki’s grip. “I said…. Let go!” He pushed up from the startled teen’s chest, ripping his pendent from Yuki’s grasp and backing away looking at the little group of Yuki’s mates before disappearing through the heavy entrance doors.
The cadet just lay there for a moment, wondered what he did wrong. Toby stood up and walked over to give his friend a hand up. “What happened?” Yuki shook his head, not knowing what to say. He held up a hand, holding his fingers an inch apart. “I was that close.”
Toby laughed. “Yeah, yeah whatever man.”

Quistis winced as Squall stormed past her into his office, she had been waiting outside the doors to talk to him.
“Squall what-”
The doors slammed behind him.
The brunette inside leant back on the door and slid to the floor, he groaned covering his face with his hands. He beat the back of his head on the wood.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Stupid to spar with Yuki.
Stupid for thinking, hoping that Yuki was interested in him… more than the rest of them. He wasn’t blind he saw the looks his ass got, in the shower, in training, in the leather that Squall liked to wear.
He was the ice prince as Seifer liked to call him, the untouchable, the fantasy for many cadets, males and females alike.
He was sure if he striped naked in front of the cadet he wouldn’t be rejected but then again he’d just be fulfilling a fantasy and wasn’t sure he wanted the other man like that.
All the dreams he’d had about the dark haired cadet in various places, positions he would have liked to try them all out. He didn’t want to be a one night stand, a conquest or a fuck buddy, he didn’t want to end up like Zell.
He noticed all the time the little blonde ran off to have sex in dark corners with his asshole lover, he didn’t want that for himself and Yuki.
All the little comments, jokes not so subtle flirting he put down to either playful, harmful fun or that the cadet wanted to bed him.
Probably the second one and he wanted that too, god did he want it but he also wanted more than a little roll in the hay.
The door vibrated under his head when someone knocked on it.
“Who is it?”
“It’s me.” Yuki said.
Squall shuffled forward so he didn’t get hit with the door. “It’s open.”
The younger man opened the door and opened in, he frowned.
“What are you doing down there?”
Squall shrugged, getting up and walking over to sit in his chair at his desk
“You okay? I thought I should check on you, you left kinda suddenly.”
Squall nodded, looking down at his paperwork that he had put off doing.
“I’m fine.” Squall answered.
“I’m sorry about before, didn’t mean to scare you away.” He smiled. “You know me I was just playing around, it didn’t mean anything.”
Squall glanced up at him.
“I was just being friendly.”
The brunette raised an eyebrow.
“Well okay really friendly.” He grinned, palms flat on Squall’s desk. “You want to…. Come to lunch with me?” He smiled.
“I was going to eat here.”
“Oh.” He tried not to look disappointed.
“But if you want to go get my lunch too….” Squall started to say.
The cadet smiled. “Okay… let me guess…. you want a black coffee?”
“And a sandwich… something nice.”
“Nice right? I can do that.”
He slipped out of the door.

“You’re sending me on your top secret mission?”
Squall rolled his eyes. “It’s hardly top secret.” He folded his arms.
“First I’ve heard of it.”
Squall raised his eyebrow. “Zell there could be a hurricane and you wouldn’t even notice the flying cows zipping past the window.”
The blonde frowned. “That’s the most I’ve heard you say in one go.”
Squall scowled. “You leave tomorrow morning.”
“Isn’t that a bit short notice?”
“I was going to go myself but it’s busier here than I expected so I’m needed here.” He handed Zell a file. “Here is your mission brief, you’ll stay in the FH hotel with a view of the docks to observe the Galbadians.”
“The soldiers? You mean the ones that we were supposed to leave alone?”
“The mayor is concerned for his people and his city, which he has the right to be. As long as you do your job tactfully.” He put extra emphasise on the last word. “Then the Galbadians won’t see you as a threat and there won’t be a problem.”
“So who else am I going with?”
Squall picked up his pen and started working so as not to look Zell in the eye when the explosion he was coming came.
“You’ll be accompanied by Seifer.”
“WHAT?!” Zell blinked. Surely Squall hadn’t just said that? He couldn’t work with Seifer. “Wait a minute, are you trying to get rid of him for a while is that why you’re sending me off on a mission with him.”
Squall didn’t answer.
“Is that what this is about? You’re sending me with that asshole so you can get some peace around here?”
“It’s only two weeks.”
“TWO WEEKS?!”
“You’ll be getting the 8:30 train to FH.”
Zell sighed. “It just gets better and better, can’t we take the Ragnorok?”
“Zell you’re supposed to be undercover, you’re not Seeds, you’re just a couple on holiday enjoying the sea air.”
“COUPLE?!”
Squall didn’t look up.
“I’m supposed to pretend to like him?”
“You did a good job at that most of the time.”
“I DO NOT like Seifer! We are Not a couple… we just…”
Squall raise an eyebrow.
“….Do things?”
“Well now you can professionally do things.”
“But Squall-”
“Was there any other questions? I do have things to do Zell.”
“Can’t you send Irvine?!”
Squall scoffed. “Irvine? Act like half of a gay couple?”
“Or Selphie?”
Squall gave him a funny look. “She’s a girl.”
“So? They can be a straight couple.”
“No, it’ll have to be you.”
“But-”
“No buts, off you go, I’ll briefed Seifer already, you’re to meet him at the front gate at 8:00 tomorrow.”
Zell groaned, and bowed his head looking defeated as he turned and left Squall’s office.
