CHAPTER 9: Flag Football's For Pansies
"SELPHIE?!?" Zell yelled back almost falling off of his bar stool.
"YOU!" Selphie pointed at Lokum. "YOU'RE ON IN 10 MINUTES." Lokum gulped, and cowered back from the enraged Selphie. "YOU TWO!" she pointed at Puma and Zoe. "GET BACK TO THE QUAD!!!! YOU!" she finally pointed to Zell. "I'M KILLING YOU." She lunged at Zell, but Puma and Lokum grabbed her quick by the arms. "YOU'RE SO DEAD!!! RUIN MY BIG DAY!!!"
"Whoa Selphie, Whoa," Zell inched his way around her, and gently placed his guitar in his room. She could break his nose, as long as it wasn't his guitar. Selphie seemed to calm down, and took a big breath.
"I'm ok now," she sighed. "Sorry a little upstrung." Puma and Lokum loosened their grip. As soon as she was free, she once again jumped at Zell, this time not missing. Zell hit the ground with a thud, and Selphie began punching Zell in the chest while she sat on his stomach. "I LET YOU SEE THE BAND, AND THIS IS HOW YOU REPAY ME!!!" she screamed. "YOU DIE!!! YOU DIE AND GO TO HELL!!!!!" Lokum and Puma were quick to grab her again, and pry her off Zell.
"No….No…….but……I didn't," Zell tried, but he obviously had the wind knocked out of him.
"Selphie it was my fault," Zoe confessed to Selphie, who could obviously no longer take the guilt. "I suggested it." Selphie was still catching her breath from her attack on Zell, and couldn't assemble any words, so she just shot Zoe a death glare.
"No it was my fault," Lokum nodded down to her. "I urged them to take me here." Selphie tried to become angry with him, but she discovered it difficult. It was impossible to be mad at Lokum.
"It's okay Lokie," she beamed up to him. "I still love you." Impressed with the resolve, Lokum led Selphie back to the couch, and let her cool down. "Why'd you leave though?"
"Well you set them up in a hell hole." Puma muttered, still behind the couch.
"I SET THAT UP MYSELF," Selphie tried to make another jump, but Lokum caught her before she could.
"Whoa Selphie it's ok," Lokum calmed her. "It's ok." Everyone returned to their seats, while Lokum held Selphie close so she wouldn't go psycho on anyone's ass.
"Not to scare anyone, but it's now 5 of," Zoe stated from the couch, looking at her watch.
"How are we supposed to get out of here?" Zell shook his head. Screams were still coming out side of the door.
"Wait, Selphie how did you get in here?" Puma questioned.
"Well let's see, I heard someone yell: LOKUM!" Selphie began, with a hint of sarcasm. "Then I skipped along magically with the mass mob, and they led me to, well what a surprise, ZELL'S ROOM!"
"Yeah we knew that," Zoe turned her head, "But you didn't come through the front door did you?"
"Oh I climbed through the bedroom window," Selphie simply stated. "I know Zell always leaves it unlocked in case of emergencies." Zell blushed, but Zoe and Puma's faces lit up.
"So can't we crawl back out?" Puma asked.
"Oh yeah!" Selphie cheered. "Then we can just cut across the courtyard and get back to the Quad." The five nodded in agreement, and followed Selphie to the bedroom. Lokum helped Selphie out, and then followed her. Zell climbed out next, and helped Zoe and then Puma out. "We gotta hurry, I have to open the Quad in three minutes. So the group sprinted behind, and crawled through a window in the Quad. Lokum broke away to climb on stage, and at 12:02, an out of breath Selphie opened the Quad door to the students. Zell, Zoe, and Puma hopped up the back of the stage to have the best view of Cool Coeurl. People pushed and shoved their way to get close to the stage, and Lokum started as soon as the doors opened.
>"Hey mister, where you headed?"
>"Are you in a hurry?"
>"I need a lift to happy hour."
>"Say oh nooooooo."
>"Do you break for distilled spirits?"
>"I need a break as well."
>"The well that inebriated the guilt."
>"Say 1,2, 1,2,3,4"
Women swooned at the stage, reaching for a touch of even Lokum's shoe. Others raided the refreshment table, and took seats in the back.
>"Cold Turkey's getting stale."
>"Tonight I'm eating crow."
>"Fermented salmonella poison oak."
>"Noooooooo."
>"There's a drought at the fountain of youth."
>"And now I'm dehydrating."
>"My Tongue is swelling up as say"
>"1,2, 1,2,3,4"
Selphie sold seat tickets, but nonetheless, a mosh pit formed in front of the stage. People put their hands in the air, and jumped around.
>"Trouble times."
>"You know I cannot lie."
>"I'm off the wagon."
>"And I'm hitchin' a ride."
Zell, Zoe, and Puma sat behind drummer Adrone, and watched the masses form. It seemed as if the whole garden turned out, as a steady flow of people continued to push.
>"There's a drought at the fountain of youth."
>"And now I'm dehydrating."
>"My tongue is swelling up."
>"I say SHIT!!!"
"Zell, Puma let's stage jump!" Zoe's eyes lit up. Zell shook his head, and Puma just stared at the floor, but Zoe grabbed ahold of them and they ran past Lokum during the last chorus.
>"Trouble times."
>"You know I cannot lie."
>"I'm off the wagon."
>"And I'm hitchin' a ride."
By the time they jumped, the moshpit was over 500 people thick. They were tossed in separate directions. Zell caught sight of where Puma landed, and headed over to him.
"What happened to Zoe?" Puma questioned. He was still smiling, cause he never did that before.
"Don't know," Zell replied, looking around. "We need to get out of here though. More people entered the Quad, increasing the moshpit. The mob was slowly pushing them back, and there was no way they could search for Zoe in this madness. They could hear Selphie yelling however.
"NO! YOU PAYED FOR SEATS!!!" she screamed. "NO MOSHPIT, SEATS!!!!" Zell and Puma chuckled, and retreated to the back of the Quad. They looked around for Zoe, but she was nowhere to be found.
"Prolly stayed in the pit," Zell laughed, thinking of what terror she was causing to those around her. Zell and Puma found a bench and watched the show. Thinking back, this was one of the first time that Zell was able to sit back and absorb his surroundings. He always had somewhere to go. Running home to pack, keeping Selphie entertained, finding Puma, going shopping. "I really haven't had much time to sit," he though to himself, which was true. He ran back and forth to Balamb a million times all ready, and it was only the third day of school. This year was supposed to be easy. No school, no homework, no worries. It didn't happen that way though. Sighing, Zell put his hands behind his head, and slouched out his red shoes. It had been a long day.
Puma wasn't tired; he was embarrassed. Like Zell, this was also the first time he got to slow down, and reminisce the last three days. To sum it up, he made an ass out of himself. Puma said and did some embarrassing things, but thinking about this now, it hurt much more then when it happened. "Just stop thinking," he told himself, but it was to no use. The images of Zell finding him in the Training Area, his whole ordeal in the cafeteria, and then how he acted at the Dincht residence. Just embarrassing. In reality, Zell didn't think too much of these events. The kid wasn't retarded, running around biting people, he was hot, and he was fun to be around. Zell drew these three reasons of why he considered Puma a good friend. The redhead was much more self-critical though. He clenched his eyes shut and shook his head. "How can you be so stupid?"
Zell recognized the kid's sudden change in emotion. "You all right man," he asked, looking at the red head.
"Stupid again," Puma thought, as a flash of crimson flooded over his face. "Yeah just a bad thought," he explained back to Zell. Puma tried to smile, but was too lost in his raging thoughts to do so. The blonde put his arm around the boy, and pulled the redhead to him. Puma happily obliged, and put his head on Zell's shoulder. Instantly his embarrassment flew out of him, and he was satisfied with Zell's warmth. Stroking the boy's cheek, and moving down to his right side, Zell came to realize that yes, he was interested in the boy. He had fought it, saying it was just an attraction, it would pass, but it never left. How Puma stole his heart in three days was beyond Zell.
"Sly bastard," Zell thought, continuing to scratch the boy's ribs. Zoe had caught Zell's eye in a total of seventeen years. This kid three days? Unimaginable. Zell just shook his head. He wasn't disappointed, but just astounded. The redhead made him happy. And to be able to rub Puma's side, and wrap his arms around him, was of the utmost importance right now. He wouldn't trade it for the world. People were staring, but he didn't care. If I may quote a little Incubus here, "In this moment, he was happy." An intrusive lion forced it to an end however.
"Squall," Zell mumbled, watching the brunette sit next to him. People said Squall was antisocial and rude, but Zell just found the man to be quiet. He never said much, but you could pretty much guess what he was trying to express by his eyes. This was one of those situations. Zell caught Squall looking at the boy in his arms, unsure of what to make of the situation. Puma had obviously noticed the appearance of Squall too, but avoided recognizing him. He was it too good of a place right now.
"Zell," was all Squall could get out. Zell just nodded, and without any other words, the two understood the situation. Squall wasn't one to go too far into personal lives, but Zell was one of the few people he respected. Hell, if it weren't for Zell, Squall probably wouldn't have passed the SeeD test. They got along. Squall and Zell weren't best buddies who held slumber parties and such, but there was respect, and this lion didn't respect many.
"We lost Selphie," Zell smiled. "She'll come looking for us here soon though." Squall just nodded. He didn't smile, but reading his eyes, Zell could tell Squall felt the same way he did about Selphie. The three didn't say much for the remainder of the time they spent on that bench. Zoe was apparently still having fun in the moshpit, and didn't notice the boys. They were just comfortable. It was all disturbed by Selphie though, who suddenly took the stage after one song.
"We're going to try to move the festival outside," she announced, grabbing the mike. "It's a nice day, so we're going to move the stage out and everything," she gushed. "So let's all be patient, and try to do this in an orderly fashion. Nobody listened to Selphie though. The mob of people flew towards the back door, making it impossible to move the stage anywhere. Zell just laughed, and looked at Squall.
"Shall we?" Zell asked. Squall nodded. The blonde threw Puma an elbow, and got him up so they could all go. Outside, the three realized Selphie was right; there was a nice little place. They paved a little basketball court; there was a football field, some nice little picnic benches, and most importantly, barbecues. The aroma of burgers, chicken, and yes, hotdogs filled the air. Zell, Squall, and Puma finally spotted Zoe at a table, and joined her. "Where the hell were you?"
"Moshpit" Zoe giggled back. "I hope they have another one." As they talked, Selphie helped push the stage outside. "Let's all go get in the front row. You guys are coming with me this time!"
"Nah, we're playing football aren't we Zelly?" as evil blonde commented from behind. Zell jumped, as the big man slammed his hand on his shoulder.
"Why would I want to do anything with you Seifer?" Zell sneered back, recovering from his quick fright.
"No Zell we're playing," Zoe glared at Seifer. She was never one to back down from a challenge.
"You're not playing bitch, this is tackle. We're not playing little pansy flag." Zell had to literally hold Zoe back. There wasn't a moment in her life when she was angrier.
"What's going on?" Selphie cheered, joining the group.
"A little football," Seifer smiled.
"Can I play?" Selphie tried.
"Sure."
"Then why can't I play?" Zoe growled at him.
"I don't like whores," Seifer mocked. He found that she was as easy to rile as Zell.
"That's it! I don't care what you say! I'm playing! And you're getting hit hard," Zoe threatened.
"Suit yourself. I'm takin Selphie though."
"Fine we're taking ball," Zell shot back. The group nodded, the teams were fair enough. It would be Seifer, Raijin, Fujin, and Selphie vs. Squall, Zell, Puma, and Zoe. Agreed, the group trotted off to the little football field. It was only about 50 yards long, but with only 4 on 4, it was decently sized. Zell felt good about his chances of winning. Squall wasn't a jock, but he was easily one of the greatest athletes in the school. He considered himself a quality player, and he'd seen Zoe play angry before. The only question was Puma.
"BOOT!" Seifer yelled, and punted the ball down the field. Zoe pushed Zell out of the way to catch it, and charged upfield. Zell and Squall took care of Raijin, and Puma blocked Selphie. Fujin was the first to reach Zoe, but was no match in strength. Zoe threw her a hard shoulder, and she flew to the side. Everyone forgot about Seifer though, and he picked her up and slammed her to the ground at about the forty.
"Not so confident now are we?" he yelled standing above her. Zell helped her up, and they began to take the offense.
"What are we playing to?" Zell yelled over to Seifer.
"We'll make it quick; 21," Seifer nodded back. For those of you who do not understand back yard football, let's explain. It's very similar to regulation (NFL) football, except there aren't as many positions. There is one quarterback, and the 3 wide receivers, as it's four on four. Three people on defense covers the receivers, and the other plays safety, or double-teams the best
receiver. The offense gets 4 plays to get 2 catches. 2 catches equal a first down. If they fail to get two catches on fourth down, they can punt or go for it. Fake punts are not allowed. There are no running plays or field goals. The only way to score is to have the ball in the endzone. Therefore, every touchdown is worth 7 points. Referring to Seifer's comment, this basically means that the first team to get 3 touchdowns wins. Ok that should cover everything. Zell's team entered their first huddle.
"Kay, who wants to Q?" Zell asked. Squall was needed as a receiver, Zoe wanted a piece of Seifer, and still unsure about Puma's abilities, Zell revoked his question. "Never mind, I'll do it." The other three nodded, and stood up to the line of scrimmage. Seifer lined up to cover Squall, Raijin lined with Puma, Fujin covered Zoe, and Selphie played safety.
"Rage," Seifer yelled. "Switch with Fuj. That runts not getting anything." Raijin nodded and obliged. Zoe smiled to Zell from the far right, and Zell knew she was gonna be open the first play. Cool Coeurl had apparently gotten everything organized, cause as Zell snapped the first play, the speakers blasted around them.
>"Dear Mother, can you hear me whining?"
>"It's been three whole weeks since I have left your home."
>"This sudden fear has left me trembling."
>"'Cause now it seems that I am out here on my own."
>"And I'm feeling so alone."
Raijin tried to push Zoe back at the line, but with one quick move she was around him, and alone in the backfield. Selphie hurried over, but was not in time to stop Zell's pass. Zoe caught it running, and was finally brought down by Selphie at the 15.
"BAM!" Zell yelled, running over to help her up. Rage was lost, and got a slap on the back of head from Seifer. Zoe grinned at Seifer as she walked back into the huddle, and she could tell, he wasn't happy. "Kay, second down and we need one completion. Who want it?"
"Give it to Puma," Zoe suggested. "Fujin doesn't seem to know what she's doing." Zell looked at Puma, who gave no reaction.
"Kay, line up to the left of me," he stared at Puma. "Take three steps, and then make a hard cut right in front of me. It'll be short, but we'll get three more downs. The group nodded, and took to the line. Puma followed the play with perfection. Fujin bit on the deep play, and Puma was wide open. Zell lobbed him the ball. Puma barely touched the ball when Seifer, who saw the play, trucked him. The ball flew out of Puma's hands for an incomplete.
"That's how you hit," Seifer smiled to his teammates. Zell helped Puma to his feet, who had the wind knocked out of him.
"You all right man?" Zell asked, looking at the boy's heaving breaths. Puma nodded, and Zell held a long huddle so he could catch his breath. "Kay third down, same thing."
"Zell are you nuts?" Zoe glared. "Puma's beat. He can barely run."
"Trust me." So the offense returned to the line, and Puma reluctantly did the three-step cut. Once again, Fujin bit, and Seifer came up to make the hit. Zell faked the ball to Puma however, and threw a lob over to Squall, who was wide open. He caught it with ease, shook Selphie off with a stiff arm, and was in the endzone. "WHOOOHOOOO!" Zell exclaimed, and ran to congratulate Squall. 7-0 Zell.
>"Pay attention to the cracked streets and the broken homes."
>"Some call it slums and some call it nice."
>"I want to take you to a wasteland,"
>"That I like to call my home."
>"Welcome to paradise."
Zell kicked it off, and Seifer caught it. "Take care of Squall," he yelled to his teammates, I'll take care of the rest," He was right, with Squall gone," Seifer easily ran over Zoe and Puma. Selphie tripped up Zell, and Seifer was easily in the endzone. 7-7 tied.
>"A gunshot rings out at the station."
>"Another urchin snaps and left dead on his own."
>"It makes me wonder why I'm still here."
>"For some strange reasons it's now feeling like my home,"
>"And I'm never gonna go."
Seifer kicked it off again, and Zell caught it. He returned it to only about the 30, before being dragged down. "We gotta find a way to stop Seifer if we wanna win," Zell shook his head. Everyone nodded, but didn't know how. "Kay forget about it." Zell looked at Puma, and realized that was his best bet. "Puma, put on your jets, and blast by Fujin. I'm giving it to you deep." Puma nodded, and had little difficulty getting by Fujin. Seifer read Zell's eyes, and ran to the redhead. The ball hit Puma in the chest, but he was unable to control it. The ball bounced off of him, and unfortunately into Seifer's hands. Seifer was past Zell before he could realize what happened. 14-7 Seifer.
>"Pay attention to the cracked streets and the broken homes."
>"Some call it slums and some call it nice."
>"I want to take you through a wasteland,"
>"That I like to call my home."
>"Welcome to paradise."
The kickoff came to Squall this time. Zell, Puma, and Zoe helped with some good blocks, and Squall got to the 20 in Seifer's territory before being dragged down.
"Zell, I want it," Zoe glared up to the tattooed blonde. She was pissed. Seifer insulted her, and then beat her athletically. Nobody did that to her.
"Kay," Zell nodded. Seifer cut off Squall, and Puma apparently didn't have good hands, so Zoe was his last option. She put some smooth moves on Raijin, and easily caught the ball. Zoe blew over Selphie, and paraded into the endzone.
"OHHHHHHYEEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!" she yelled. 14-14 tied
>"Dear mother, can you hear me laughing?"
>"It's been six whole months since I have left your home."
>"It makes me wonder why I'm still here."
>"For some strange reason it's now feeling like my home,"
>"And I'm never gonna go."
Zell kicked the ball off again, landing it at Selphie. She caught it, but knew Seifer wanted it. She tossed it back, and once again prepared to block. Fujin and Raijin took out Squall and Zell, and Selphie stopped Zoe. Not concerned about Puma, Seifer began to taunt the redhead, as he jogged towards the endzone. In a twist however, Puma rammed his shoulder into Seifer's chest.
"Ugh…………" Seifer fell back to the ground. The ball flew out of his hands, and still standing, Puma grabbed it. Zoe, Zell, and Squall held off their men, and created a straight path for Puma to get into the endzone. He ran in, put his arms in the air, and spiked the ball. Final score: 21-14 Puma, Squall, Zell, and Zoe.
