Chapter 10: The first battle
After our briefing, the group set off over the Carcino mountains to our next destination. At about halfway through the day, the group’s Mage, Jonas approached me. “Hi! I’m Jonas!” Said the blonde haired boy “I wanted to ask you about your knowledge of fighting.”
“Huh?” I asked, skeptical
“Well, about the weapon triangle and stuff!” He replied
“Oh! That! Yeah, I know about that.”
“Oh…” Said Jonas, looking rather put down. Apparently, he had wanted to show off some of his knowledge as a mage to me. I walked over to Jira, who was having a conversation with the bishop, Claire. I decided not to interrupt them, and traveled over to Adam, the cavalier, who had donned his armor, was trotting slowly on his horse. “Hello!” I said, trying to break the ice.
“Hi” he simply said
There was silence
“So… where do you come from?” I asked Adam
“Oh, I come from a small town in Jehana. I was home-schooled by my father, who taught me how to wield a sword and lanc-“ Suddenly, an arrow flew down from the sky, and almost hit Parz. As it flew towards the boy’s head, it suddenly was surrounded by a strange purple-black orb, and stopped moving. I looked around to see who had stopped the arrow, to see Knarth slowly chanting a spell, and reading from his tome. After a few seconds of levitation, the arrow dropped to the ground.
There was an awkward silence. What was I supposed to do? Yell out? Retreat? Attack? Everyone stared at me, until Arielle yelled, “Look!” And pointed up at the top of a hill. Climbing the crest of the hill seemed to be a troop of soldiers. Another arrow, this one shot by an enemy ballista came cascading down upon our group. Payton jumped in the way of the arrow, and blocked it with the blunt side of his thick sword. Parz began to back away, and Claire jumped in front of him.
Suddenly, the now-apparent enemy leader, who happened to be a gaunt thief, raised his curved sword, and the group of Mercenaries, which consisted of Mercenaries, Fighters, and Soldiers, cascaded down the hill, jeering, and yelling. Immediately, I yelled, “James! Aim your axes at the soldiers! Payton! Get the Fighters! Parz! Adam! Go for the Mercenaries! Magic wielders! Aim your magic at the leader!” Had I forgotten somebody? I looked at the battle scene commencing in front of me, and then looked behind me. “Ah! Ken, and Riley! Attack any archers and ballistae!”
The battle commenced as Jira and I hid in the forests that were scattered around the “battlefield”. Suddenly, Jira yelled to Payton, “Payton, behind you!” Payton spun around to see James being attacked by a soldier wielding an Axereaver. Payton gruesomely hacked the soldier’s arm off. Meanwhile, a cavalier snuck up behind Payton. Jira yelled a warning to Payton, and then yelled to James “James! Get the mounted one!” James did an amazing back-flip over Payton, and spun 180 degrees, and attacked the cavalier. James’ axe split the Cavalier’s lance in half, only to have the Cavalier take out his sword.
I saw Parz, flying in the sky, trying to get in attacks when Adam wasn’t attacking. It wasn’t working. Adam was working tirelessly at killing the mercenaries. An arrow grazed Parz’s arm, and blood started to spew out. I yelled a heads-up to Claire who immediately whipped her staff off her back, and healed Parz’s bleeding arm, then she went back to firing Lightnings and Shines at the leader.
I yelled out to Parz, who swooped down, and made quick work of the cavalier who was attacking James with a sword. As the battle wound down, the only people left were the Ballista-manager and the leader, who looked to be a Thief, but somehow wielding a lance. Suddenly, an arrow came down from nowhere, and struck Riley’s horse, smack-dab, in the side. Riley jumped off his horse as he fell to the ground.
Jira yelled out commands to Knarth and Jonas and Arielle. Knarth was to freeze the arrows, Jonas was to attack the person inside the ballista, and Arielle was to attack the ballista itself. This commenced, and soon enough, the ballista was nothing but a heap of wood and blood.
“I SURRENDER!” we suddenly heard. The Thief had been reduced to a sobbing heap on the ground. With no soldiers left, he seemed to be hopeless. Ken approached the Thief, with James on his tail, in case the Thief chose to attack. “What was your purpose of fighting” Asked Ken, to the thief
“We were simply a mercenary group… I wish to join you, you men are strong”
“Ahem!” Claire and Arielle were trying to make themselves clear
“Oh, I’m sorry!” Said the Thief, straightening up. “My name is Malikai.”
Claire was desperately trying to heal Riley’s horse. Apparently, it wasn’t working very well “I can’t heal animals as well as I can humans!” Said, Claire, sadly. “I’m sorry, Riley!” We were all gathered around, and Riley looked very sad. He never went to sleep that night.
As I went to bed, I took one last look at the Recruit sheet it now read:
