Chapter Sixteen
The Sohma God

Kagura Sohma woke in the morning to find that she was so dizzy that she couldn't get out of bed. She wanted to call Kyou, but she probably couldn't make it to the bathroom to throw up, let alone the phone. She moaned and rolled over, trying to become comfortable again. She hated being sick. She had been planning on going to visit Kyou today, too. Now they would have to call Hatori to make a house call, and she would have to be stuck inside, in bed all day.
This was not how she had been planning on spending her weekend.

Kikyou thought, This is it. I'm going to die again.
Kagome was terrified. She couldn't die here! What about her mom, her grandpa, Sota? What about… Haru?
Inuyasha was faced with a terrible decision. On one hand, he could try to attack Naraku and Akito and ignore Kagome and Kikyou. On the other, he could try to protect them and die trying. Die because of a bunch of wreckage hurled at him. Not appealing. Still, he might not die. But they would. He didn't know if he could stand to lose both of them at once. He may not have a chance with either of them anymore, and that was okay; he had Kyou now. But he would still feel a deep loss if anything were to happen to either of them.
Damn, he was fucked! What could he do? He stepped back toward the girls, eying Akito. When they had said that this guy was evil, he had never imagined his wickedness rivaled Naraku's.
He ground his teeth. Akito and Naraku smirked. He knew that he might die here—so close to victory.
But fate would have it otherwise. Something passed by overhead, blocking out the sun for a moment. The others looked up to see what it could possibly be. It was Hatori, of the dragon. He dove down. Naraku moved out of the way, barely in time. Akito flung the debris at Inuyasha. Hatori circled around them, creating a shield with his own body. Though it would have killed them, it didn't bother Hatori at all and the pieces only shattered against his scales.

Ayame felt himself slammed against a wall. He was about to protest at this treatment, then he saw who it was who had pushed him. Sesshomaru.
“What did you do that for?” he demanded. Sesshomaru kept his eyes away from the mirror and practically flew at Kanna. The child youkai never had a chance, and she did nothing to stop him. Only when he was sure that she was dead, did he looked back at Ayame, to be sure that he was all right. He looked a bit dazed, but other than that, he was fine.
“What's going on out there?” a timid, female voice called.
“Tohru-chan!” Shigure said. He raced to the door and slid it open.
“Shigure-san!” she said, and hugged him. “I was so scared.”
While he was immensely pleased to have Tohru hugging him and he wasn't transforming, he also knew that they had to leave from her fast. They could hear the battle raging, and the Sohmas and Tohru needed to get away. Sesshomaru wouldn't let Ayame walk. The snake put up no protests to being carried, however. How a guy with one arm could carry Aya was beyong Shigure, but apparently he was stronger than his slender form suggested, and Ayame was pretty slender himself.
“What's happened? What's been going on?” Tohru asked. “Where's Kyou-chan and Sohma-kun?”
“We'll explain everything to you once we get back. But it's not safe here.” Shigure led Tohru through the halls, sniffing his way back.
Tohru was glad to be outside, but she really wanted to ask questions, but her own politeness kept her from doing so. Ayame was concerned about Hatori and the others. From the sounds of things, it was getting rather violent.
Miroku wondered where Sango had gotten to, then glanced at Shigure. Maybe he was getting over Sango. And maybe he did like Shigure. Birds of a feather, after all.
Sesshomaru was the only one who wasn't in the least bit concerned for the well-being of others at the moment. He didn't particularly care if the priestesses or Inuyasha died. He would, however, be angry if they let Naraku get away.

Kohaku tried to ignore Sango as he ran towards the sounds of battle. She assumed that he was going to help Naraku, and thus tried to stop him. He evaded most of her harmless attacks, and when he couldn't, she always just tried to hold him back. Damn! Of all the times! Naraku was so busy with this battle that Kohaku might have a chance.
Where was the infant?
Naraku had hidden him somewhere, and likely, it was somewhere near. Kanna usually watched over him, which meant that the child was probably here somewhere. And, she had left him somewhere so that she could use her mirror. This meant that the infant was unguarded, though probably well hidden. There was only one place Kanna would have thought safe enough to put the child. He kneeled down and threw open the trapdoor. Sango paused. “Kohaku…?”
He disappeared into the darkness. She followed him.

Back at the village, Kyou, Yuki, and Haru worried about where Momiji had gotten to, and, most of all, what had become of Tohru. Momiji had probably just wandered off. But it was difficult to say about Tohru.
Yuki also worried about Sango, of course. For some reason, he was attracted to Sango, and he liked her as a friend as well.
Haru was concerned for Kagome too. He knew that she had faced great perils before and had always came out all right, but he just couldn't help but worry about the girl.
Kyou was secretly worried about Inuyasha. He just didn't know Akito. He didn't know how devious, cruel, and all around evil Akito could be.
He wandered away from the village and soon found himself looking down the well. He wondered if it were even possible to get back. Experimentally, he jumped through. When he hit the bottom, he felt no impact—as if he had just appeared there, similar to last time.
He looked up. It was dark, and he was inside now. Interesting. So, the well really did connect the two worlds. He climbed out the well and looked around. Did time pass the same here? Probably. That would explain why Kagome was “sick” all the time.
He got ready to jump back down the well into the past, then froze. He doubled over in pain as if someone had punched him in the gut. A cold sweat broke out on his forehead. Damn, he felt sick. Why was this? He had gotten sick so suddenly, too. What had happened?
He took a deep breath, then coughed. He tried to brush it off. Why was he so sick so suddenly? This was insane. He climbed over the edge, feeling lightheaded. Maybe he shouldn't go down there. Then again, what if this was because Akito wasn't here anymore?
He had to find out. Kyou let himself fall downwards. He found himself in the other world again, and completely well. He had also lost the cat ears and tail in the trip back. Not that that was any big loss.
He climbed out of the well. He looked back down it. Without Akito there… They would all die of sickness, wouldn't they? He thought about Kisa, Hiro, Ritsu, Rin, and Kagura. He had never met Kureno, but he knew that he must be suffering as well. They had to get Akito back now. If not to protect this place from his wrathful insanity, for the Sohma family. Now he knew for sure; they really couldn't live without the Sohma god.
