Chapter Twenty
Let's Draw Straws
Inuyasha paused under a tree, sniffing the air. He leaped upwards, beside Kyou. For a while, they sat in silence.
A leaf drifted down, landing on Kyou's kitty ear. He flicked his ear in annoyance, sending the leaf on its journey to the forest floor.
“How does he do it?” Inuyasha wondered. “Erase memories.”
Kyou shook his head a little. “I don't know exactly, but it's something the Sohma dragons can do with hypnosis.”
“What's that?”
The cat looked at the dog sidelong. “It's like… When you know hypnosis, you can make people do things they wouldn't normally—including forget things.” Kyou's eyes widened. A faint glimmer of hope flared. “But… Sometimes, something will happen, and the memories will come back.” Kyou felt calm—finally. Calm. There was hope for him—for everyone. He smiled.

“What're ya smilin' about? Isn't all this shit bad?” Inuyasha demanded.
Kyou laughed softly. “There's hope.” He looked up at the sky. “We have a chance of remembering again one day.” He swished his tail. “We have a hope of remembering each other again.”
Inuyasha felt calm again. Fine, he was going to forget about Kyou. But… there was a chance that he would remember again one day. So maybe, it wasn't as bad as it sounded. Albeit, he didn't like the idea of forgetting all of this had happened. And he didn't like the idea of letting Hatori do something like this. But maybe it was all for the best, in the end. He shifted his position a little, accidentally brushing his hand against Kyou's. He jerked away. Kyou felt a blush coming on and looked away.
He didn't want to forget this place. He just didn't want to forget…
“Kyou.”
“Hm?” he wondered, looking back at Inuyasha.
The dog wasn't looking at him, though. He was staring down at the ground. “If you happen to remember again one day, don't do anything to lose the memories.”
“Why would I do that?”
Inuyasha almost knocked him out of the tree, then decided not to. “Just don't! Even if we're in different worlds, and I might not remember you… don't forget about me again.”
“You too.” All this sentimental stuff was really too much for the two of them, and they weren't very good at it either. They turned to each other, trying to say something more, but couldn't find the right words, or the right way to say it. They looked away again, then back at each other.
“I—“
“You—“
They stopped and averted their eyes for a moment. Kyou looked back at Inuyasha. Inuyasha slowly gazed back. Kyou leaned in a little bit. Inuyasha moved a little bit closer. Kyou stopped halfway there, sort of blushing and sort of not. Inuyasha rolled his eyes a little and met his lips there with his. They deepened the kiss, moving toward each other until their bodies were in an embrace. Kyou suddenly lost his balance and slipped over backwards. Inuyasha grabbed him and hauled him back up, smirking a bit at the cat's clumsiness. They resumed the kiss, a bit awkwardly at first, then with growing strength as they explored each other's mouths gently.
Inuyasha' haori began to slip down one of his shoulders. He went to fix it, but Kyou put his hand on his. Kyou pulled away. “We're going to forget everything anyway, so why bother with boundaries?”
Inuyasha's hand slipped away. For some reason, it ended up resting on Kyou's leg. Kyou's fingers curled around the collar of his haori and slowly pulled it down. His other hand went to that knot of his obi. He hesitated, not entirely sure if he wanted to go through with this. Some things needed to be resolved still. Should he really be having sex (particularly with a guy) amidst so much danger?
For that matter…
“Inuyasha… Who is going to be…”
The dog hanyou caught on immediately. “Er…” Neither of them were really fit for uke, personality-wise, and they were both fairly dominant, and one way or the other didn't seem natural. “Maybe we just…”
“Shouldn't go through with this,” Kyou finished. They both looked away. This was so awkward. Kyou looked back at him. “Hey, what if we just, um… I don't know. Draw cards, or maybe…”
Inuyasha, for once in his life, had a halfway decent idea. He reached up and broke off a handful of twigs. He sort them all out, tossing out all but two. He turned away from Kyou and closed them in his fast. “Smaller one is uke,” he said, holding out his fist. Kyou looked at it. Did he really want to go through with this?
“Maybe, er… We should wait…”
“We might not even remember each other by as soon as tomorrow night,” he pointed out, in his usual, harsh manner.
Kyou sighed. It was true. And he might never get this chance again. He close his eyes, heart pounding. The moment of truth…
He picked a twig and slowly pulled it out of Inuyasha's fist. Inuyasha held the other one between two fingers. The longer one. Kyou moaned. It would be the beginning of a long, long stream of moans, but in a different way.
Right after Akitoki had eaten, he thanked Kaede and Tohru fervently. It seemed that, no matter the century, Tohru's cooking was absolutely delicious.
Tohru flushed. “Thank you. In the morning, I'll help with breakfast too.” She smiled.
She really did have a pretty smile, and she was always so cheerful and kind. “That would be wonderful! Tohru-chan, you're cooking is truly the best I've ever tasted!”
Kaede rolled her eyes. I cooked that too, y'know…
Tohru smiled, a little embarrassed, but very flattered. “I'm glad you like it.” She stood up. “You must be tired, so let's find you a place to sleep. Kaede, where are all the boys'… er, huts?”
Kaede gave her directions, but it would probably be empty except for Sesshomaru and Ayame. Considering how physical their relationship was, though, it may not be best to go inside. Tohru, with her innocent mind, never thought about it, however. Besides, no one had told her about that, and no one wanted to.
Thankfully, the room was totally quiet when she led Akitoki inside. The two fell silent, moving as quietly as possible. Sesshomaru had fallen asleep with his arm over Ayame. Ayame was asleep on his stomach, face turned toward Sesshomaru. Tohru smiled. They looked so cute.
“Tohru-chan, I'd like to thank you again for the meal,” he whispered. Akitoki gave a polite bow, which Tohru almost instinctively returned. Unfortunately, they were too close to each other, and ended up bumping their heads. They looked at the sleeping pair, but the noise hadn't disturbed them at all. Tohru rubbed her head and smiled again. “Um, good night.”
“Oh, good night, Akitoki-san.” Tohru turned to leave, then glanced back at him. He smiled at her in the dim light. She returned the smile and made her exit.
