The headlights came none to soon for Shigure, when he finally saw them in the distance, coming along the winding road passed near his home. Soon they came to a stop, and suddenly the forest around his home was dark again, but hardly silent. Voices rang out in sharp contrast to the uneasy silence that had lain around the house and it's inhabitants, almost as if even the animals knew that something horrible had happened. The sounds of running footsteps and agitated voices grew louder, and suddenly from the underbrush that surrounded the house erupted four of the Juunishi. Three of the four started speaking at once, the fourth just bit her lip holding back tears as she held a battered stuffed tiger. "Shigure, what happened?" whined Momiji even as Kagura and Haru burst out with "Where is she?" "How is she?" Shigure looked behind them, seeing Hatori making his way through the brush, carrying his bag. He raised an eyebrow at the doctor. Hatori shook his head and fixed him with a look that said ' I'll tell you later.' Shigure turned his attention back to the youngsters, and in a voice that held more seriousness than they were used to hearing from him, he said in rapid succession, "I don't know, in her room and I don't know. What I do know however is that the four of you can't go traipsing up there right now and if you're going to be in the house you have to stay quiet. He glanced at Hatori, imperceptibly nodding his head toward the stairs, as the group approached the porch and started through the door. The youngsters settled around the table in the dining room, Momiji and Kisa on one side, Haru and Kagura on the other. Kisa just buried herself in Momiji's chest and started to cry. He wrapped his arms around her and stroked her hair. On the other side of the table, Kagura and Haru looked as if they were desperately trying to hold on to control of their darker sides. Haru was slowly rubbing a hand up and down Kagura's back even as she held the other. Shigure looked at them and sighed. What had Hatori brought them with him for anyway? "Well ladies and gentlemen," he said, in an obviously forced light tone, "since it looks like we might be in for a long night, would you like some tea?" They all nodded, slowly, taking in the worry etched on Shigure's features and the tone of his voice. Things were obviously worse than they had expected.
climbed the stairs and walked down the hall to Tohru's room. He looking into the room he stifled a gasp as he looked at Tohru. Kyou and Yuki were sitting one to each side of her. Yuki had a washcloth that he was wiping across her forehead, Kyou held a bandage to her stomach. He closed his eyes. ~ Damn, why didn't I think to call here? ~ When Akito had been found, collapsed, nude, and covered in blood, in his quarters, Hatori had thought he'd hurt himself with those metal claws on his fingertips. But after washing away the blood and giving the family head a thorough check over there had been no signs of damage to him, other than a couple of bruises that would take a while to heal. He'd stayed long enough to see that Akito came to, and then had left to the sounds of his maniacal laughter. He'd called the parents of the younger set to "invite them over for a movie night at his place so their parents could take some time out to relax." The offer had been taken graciously by all of them, except Hiro's, who said he was grounded. He'd rented some movies and gotten lots of soda and popcorn and heaved a sigh of relief as each of the kids came through his door. Once all the younger Juunishi at the compound had been accounted for, he'd assumed that whomever Akito had been "playing" with was no worse for wear, because he hadn't gotten a call. Shigure'd have called if one of the boys came home hurt and Tohru should have been at her work, Obviously, that hadn't been the case. Anger rose in him. This child had done nothing to deserve what he saw here, and he wasn't even really close enough to see the real damage. ~ Damn you, Akito, I hope you rot in the lowest hells for pulling a trick like this. ~ But, now, what was done, was done. Now, he had to put her back together, physically at least. Who knew how long it'd take to heal the mental damage, or if they even could. Carefully, he resumed his outer calm, the doctor's face. He cleared his throat. Both boys jumped, and looked behind them. "Hatori!" they said, echoing one another. "I'm going to have to ask you boys to leave so that I can examine her, " he responded in that calm, efficient voice that seemed to soothe the youngsters of the Sohma family. Sometimes, he thought they believed he could fix anything. Yuki jumped up from his place, and laid his wash cloth on the night stand. "Momiji, Kisa, Kagura and Haru are downstairs, don't frighten them more than they already are." Hatori said as Yuki made his way past him. He nodded to Hatori once, and made a hasty exit. Kyou on the other hand remained sitting, his eyes fixed on some point on the wall. "She won't wake up, damn it why won't she wake up? " he whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. His hand was still pressing the bandage on her stomach. Hatori crossed to the bed, and Kyou looked up at him, tears glazing his eyes. Hatori placed a hand on the young man's shoulder. "Go on now, Kyou, let me look at her and I'll let you come back up once I'm done." Kyou released his grip on the bandage, and stood shakily. He leaned over Tohru, brushing a kiss across her forehead, and whispered softly into the ear closest to him, "I'm leaving now. Hatori is going to take care of you. I'll be back as soon as he lets me." Then he straightened and turned resolutely toward the door.
looked at the girl laying upon the bed, her blood staining the comforter. Kami-sama, she was a mess. He scarcely knew where to start. The boys had done a good job cleaning her up and taking care of the superficial woods while they waited for him to arrive. He opted in the end to just start with her head and work his way down. He touched her face. She was burning up. He pulled back his hand brushing it against her still damp hair, and stared at the crimson stain that light touch left. Shaking his head to clear his thoughts, he opened his bag. First thing to do was give her a shot of antibiotic. He rummaged around finding the needle and antibiotic vial and pulled the appropriate amount up the tube through the needle. He cleared the needle of air by squeezing a bit back out and then quickly administered the dosage. He continued his inspection, as mechanically as he could manage. He started listing as he went along carefully undressing her as he made his way down her body: probable concussion, badly bruised eye, lower lip split, minor cuts and bruises to her chest and upper arms, broken left arm, three ribs most likely cracked, three cuts on the abdomen that needed stitches, five more going down her back, though they weren't as deep and wouldn't require stitches, bruising and minor cuts to her legs and pelvic area, most likely some injury internally from the rape, one badly twisted ankle if the swelling was any indicator, she was dehydrated and probably in need of at least a pint of blood. She needed a hospital, not him. But... it would be too hard to explain and there'd be too many questions. He sighed and began the process of putting her together. The lip only required a couple of stitches. He set the arm as gently as he could, putting a stiff brace on it that would hold until he could get home and bring back proper cast materials and a portable x-ray machine. He'd also have to bring a rape kit. He wrapped her ribs deftly. A local anesthetic and sixty stitches later the cuts on her abdomen were closed. He'd been as careful as he could, hoping to spare her as much scarring as possible. He put another brace on the ankle, it would need x-rayed too. Through it all, tohru didn't stir, He looked over at the clock. Two hours had passed, yet the house was still frighteningly quiet, like the calm before the storm. The only sound was the occasional scratching outside the door of Tohru's room. Obviously, Kyou hadn't gone down to the others. Hatori went to the door. Kyou looked up at him expectantly, yet almost fearfully, from his seat on the floor, his fidgeting legs stilled as he sensed Hatori getting ready to speak. Hatori spoke quietly to prevent those downstairs from hearing him. "Go run a bath, Kyou, not too deep. We need to get the rest of the blood off of her and out of her hair, and after that come back here and find her something to wear." Kyou didn't utter a word, only nodded and stood and then paced down the hall. The sound of water running came shortly after. Wrapping the comforter around Tohru's body, he carefully lifted her. Kyou had come back by this time, and he skipped out of the way as Hatori walked out the door. "Bring the clothes and come to the bathroom. I'm going to need some help so I don't get these bandages wet." Kyou did as he was told, and then followed Hatori to the bathroom.
scene in the bathroom was one that Kyou would remember for as long as he lived on several levels. The first was the shock of seeing the marks going down her back, he hadn't realized they were there. Had he hurt her as he'd carried her home? Hatori had pulled the brace off her ankle and was slowly lowering her into the tub, holding her so the bandages on her torso didn't get wet. The second was the shock of how gentle Hatori could be. They'd all been raised in a certain amount fear of the man that could take away their or anyone they ever wanted to be with's memories. They all trusted him completely as a doctor, but yet there was always that fear in the back of their minds. And hard on top of this realizatiion came another. Even in this horrible, battered state, to his eyes, Tohru was beautiful, but he'd never seen a person looking so battered. His heart wrenched as his eyes roamed over her body, memorizing each bruise, each cut. His temper began to rise again. ~ Someone is going to pay in the most painful way possible before he ffinds the comfort of a jail cell for this hideous act, if he gets so lucky as to see the jail cell. Hell might be a better place for him to spend a little time . ~ Kyou wrenched his thoughts away from that line of thought and back to the present. Hatori was gently washing her down with a washcloth. "Hatori," his voice was very carefully controlled, "what did you need me to do?" Hatori nodded his head at the shower massage head above them. "Pull that down and restart the water. We'll rinse her hair as well as we can. Be careful of the bandages." Kyou nodded and did as he was asked as Hatori carefully moved Tohru's position so that she seemed to be in a crouch, her head leaning forward, her chin touching her chest. Kyou pulled Tohru's long locks to him and began to run the water across them, waiting until the water went from crimson to clear before carefully wringing each section. Once that was complete, Kyou stepped out of the room to allow Hatori to dress her and towel dry her hair. While Hatori was dressing her, he went to the linen closet and pulled out a set of sheets. He pulled the bloodied linens off of the bed and flipped the mattress. Then he remade the bed, going to his own room to get the blanket from his bed for her. He returned in time to see Hatori settle her back down on the bed. He pulled a bag of saline from his bag and readied the IV to go into her arm. looking above the bed, he found a nail protruding from the wall. He hung the saline from it and ran the IV down to the crook of her good arm, inserted the needle and taped it down. Then he finally spoke again. "If she doesn't regain consciousness soon, we'll have to take her to the hospital. She's lost quite a bit of blood and that head injury may be more severe than I believe it to be." Hatori said as he looked down at the girl. Kyou just nodded as he laid the blanket across her frail form. His eyes strayed to the clock. 3am. Hatori spoke again looking over at the young man opposite him. "Go take a shower and get that blood off of you, change your clothes and then come back.
did has he was told as quickly as he could and upon returning to the room, Hatori gave him a measuring look, taking in the scratches that he had on his arms and face. "Are you ok? "Yeah, I'm just a little scratched up from running in the woods to bring her back here." Hatori nodded. "I have to go back to the compound and retrieve some more supplies to cast her arm and such. I need you to stay here with her and I don't want the others coming in and out. She's going to be nervous and frightened when she when she does wake up." He hand Kyou two packets of pills. "When she wakes up, give her these." He leaned down and picked up his bag. "I'll tell Shigure. Hopefully, the others are asleep."
resumed his former place at Tohru's side, sliding her body over gently, just enough to have room to sit on the bed cross legged and hold her hand. Hatori walked out closing the door behind him and braced himself for the barrage at the bottom of the stairs. The barrage that never came. Shigure looked up as he entered the room and placed his fingers to his lips. The table had been pushed to the wall and there was a jumble of blankets and pillows and bodies strewn across the floor. Kisa was curled up against Momiji, her eyes still red from crying. Haru, Kagura and Yuki had fallen asleep together as well, and if the situation weren't what it was, he'd have been scolding Shigure for the position that they were in. They had stretched out side by side, spooning one another, Haru holding Kagura, Kagura holding Yuki. All three looked exhausted. Hatori motioned for Shigure to follow him to the porch. "I have to go back to the compound and pick up a few things. I'm going to catch a couple winks there and I'll be back in a couple hours." "How is she?" Shigure ventured to ask. Neither of them noticed Kisa waking up, and moving slowly to the edge of the door frame. "She's pretty bad off..." Hatori began to recite the injuries. "I've given Kyou some pain killers for her and a morning after pill, the least we can do is make sure she doesn't come out of this pregnant." Shigure gave him a quizzical look, "The least we can do, what do you mean by that?" Hatori sighed, he wouldn't get away without a full confession of the days events. He motioned to Shigure to take a seat on the steps. And then, he began the story of his day. When the tale was over, Shigure just stared at him.
did this, then, to Tohru... our Tohru." Shigure sounded angry, hurt, shocked and betrayed all in the time it took to utter that seven word sentence. "What are we going to tell the kids, you know they aren't going to just let this go under the rug!"
tell them nothing. Kyou doesn't know what pills I've given her. Right now, all he and Yuki know is that Tohru was beaten. We'll report it to the police, they'll put it in a file and forget about it. I'm sure that Akito's told her to keep her mouth shut on the pain of losing her memory, so she won't tell anyone. We'll take this one day at a time. Once she's out of the woods, you, Ayame and I will find a way to deal with the problem quietly." With that last, a growing menace tinged his voice. Shigure arched an eyebrow at that last and nodded his head slowly. A long silence fell between them.
broke the silence, his voice its usual calm clinical self. "Keep the kids down here 'til I get back. Kyou is upstairs watching over her. Once she's awake and I think she can handle more visitors, we'll let them see her. If Kyou gets too tired, have Yuki switch places with him. She knows him better than the others and he won't frighten her." Shigure just nodded. "Ok, sounds like a plan to me." Hatori started down the porch steps. Kisa slipped back to her place, still biting her lip to keep from making a sound as she wept. She closed her eyes, and buried her head back into Momiji's chest, just as Shigure re-entered the house. He walked past them and into his study where he closed the door. She could hear him though as he cried as if he was the broken child laying upstairs.
