Coming Back
Chapter 5
DISCLAIMER: I do not own Fruits basket. It belongs to Natsuki Takaya.
Sakura never heard the footsteps until they were practically right next to her. She turned her head and saw a pair of sandaled feet coming straight for her. She tried hastily to get out of the way, but still, she felt a large body fall right on top of her. And yet…why was there no explosion signaling a transformation?
*************
Hatori and the others arrived at the beach within five minutes of each other. As they were all running down the sand, they all saw a bizarre sight. A boy, of about 19, had apparently tripped and had landed right on top of Sakura.
The others automatically gasped as they waited for the loud explosion and the black smoke, but it never came.
They all stared in amazement. There was no little black dragon struggling to get free from the boy. All there was was a very startled and confused Sakura and an apologetic boy. The boy got off her and was apparently speaking to her. Sakura was obviously replying, but no one could hear what they were saying.
The boy on that had fallen on top of her quickly got up. He offered her a hand up, which she politely took. He was blushing in embarrassment.
“Sorry about that. Guess I wasn't watching where I was going.” He said, smiling apologetically.
“It's fine,” Sakura assured him, Just as long as the curse didn't activate or that the others didn't see.
************
After the boy walked off, the rest of the Zodiac went down to where Sakura was. Kyou was getting pissed, while the others were in a state of shock. How could Sakura have done that?
Speaking their thoughts aloud, Hatori asked, “Sakura, why didn't you transform?”
The younger cousin looked up at the doctor. Shit, they found out.
“Sakura, answer me.” Hatori told her after she stayed quiet.
I can't exactly tell them I've been doing alchemy. I have to come up with an excuse, Sakura thought.
“I don't know how it happened. I was just as surprised as you guys were.” Sakura responded, not quite meeting Hatori's eyes.
Hatori looked at her suspiciously, as did everyone else. Obviously, they didn't believe her.
“Hmm… Sakura, look me in the eye and say that.” Hatori told her.
Sakura could see no way out of this one, so she looked up at the tall doctor. Hatori's eyes narrowed. Sakura's eyes had turned a bright, sapphire blue, rather then the usual hazel, signifying that she was lying.
“You're lying, Sakura.” Setsuna said, able to clearly see her bright blue eyes.
“And if I am?” Sakura challenged, her eyes fading to their original color.
“You lied to us all! You know how to undo the curse and yet you still say nothing?!” Chiyo exclaimed, on the brink of anger.
“It's my choice! You don't know what it was like to have everyone, even your own family, shun you! You guys didn't have to endure the pain of losing your parents, the only real people who ever really cared about you and moving to a different country and trying to learn the language and everything! That's why I didn't say anything.” Sakura told them, struggling to keep her voice down.
“Look Sakura, all that may have happened, but we're still just as cursed as you. All of us would do anything to break the curse and we had all given up hope.” Setsuna said, her voice breaking a little.
“Well then that's your fault, isn't it? That you gave up hope. I swore that I would never give up trying to find a cure and look where I am now. So if you want to blame somebody, blame yourselves.” Sakura said angrily before turning and walking up out of the beach and was heading back to the shrine.
“Sakura!” Kagura called, “Sakura come back! You're just being stupid.”
Sakura continued her trek, not saying a single word. The others looked at each other with sad, almost guilty eyes. What could possibly have led to this? They were trying to communicate with Sakura and get her to talk to them, but she just built up more walls around herself.
“We'd better just leave her alone for now.” Kisa said quietly.
“Yeah… but what else can we do? We can't just leave it at that.” Yuki said.
“I don't see what we can do. Sakura probably hates us all now.” Haru said, “But we can't just stay here in the cold. I say we go home and try to think of a way out of this.”
Everyone silently agreed. They all quietly hiked back up the sand dunes and went their separate ways home. Setsuna promised to make sure Ayame got home.

Sakura ran past Ayame without his knowing. He had fallen asleep in the living room on the couch. Sakura shut the door and collapsed on the bed, holding back tears. She felt something underneath her pillow and she felt under it. Her hand came upon an old book, the title faded and the pages worn and wrinkled. She opened it up but quickly shut it and hurled it against the wall.
She buried her face in the pillow, unable to hold the tears back anymore. There were knives digging into her heart, which was scarred enough. She hadn't cried since before her parents had died, ever since she was a baby. Even when her parents died, she had felt nothing but a numbing pain. The whole world had seemed so empty and she had just drifted along, hoping to find someone to take care of her. She hadn't. She had only found the Sohmas, the family that didn't care about her. She had simply grown quiet and hadn't said a word. She locked her voice away, the voice that her mother had said was more beautiful then an angel's. She grew distant from people and read most of the time. She had stumbled upon that accursed alchemy book four years ago and had tried to break the curse. It took so much study, Sakura almost gave up hope. But then she remembered her promise and then continued, finally breaking the curse on herself, amazed that it had worked. But since then, there was a tattooed dragon along her right arm going to her shoulder, a mark of her success.
Sakura's sobbing quieted ad eventually stopped. She looked out the window. It was raining. The rain pelted the windows and lightning drew jagged lines across the black sky, the dark clouds hiding the silver moon. Sakura rubbed her eyes and looked out again. Her eyes saw nothing but blurs and the occasional golden line across the sky, but somehow, se knew that the storm would last for days.

Hatori laid in his bed, unable to sleep and stared up at the ceiling. His head was filled with what Sakura had said and the painful memories. Maybe, maybe if he had just been a better doctor, he might've saved Sakura…
