Coming Back
Chapter 7

DISCLAIMER: I do not own Fruits basket. It belongs to Natsuki Takaya. I don't own Avril Lavinge's “Nobody's Home” either.

The silver moon shone through the windows, illuminating the teenager, strumming the strings of her guitar. Sakura had not left her room all day, except for going to the bathroom. She hadn't eaten anything for about two and a half days either, but Sakura couldn't care less, despite everyone's attempts to feed her. She had been singing mostly all day and reading. She could easily have gone outside, but she didn't. They would start asking her things that she didn't want to answer.

Well, I couldn't tell you, why she felt that way, she felt it every day.
And I couldn't help her. I just watched her make the same mistakes again.
What's wrong, what's wrong now, too many, too many problems,
Don't know where she belongs, where she belongs,

She wants to go home, but nobody's home,
That's where she lies, broken inside, with no place to go, no place to go,
To dry her eyes, broken inside

Open your eyes, and look outside, find the reasons why
You've been rejected, and now you can't find what you've left behind
Be strong, be strong now, too many, too many problems, don't know where she belongs, where she belongs

She wants to go home, but nobody's home,
That's where she lies, broken inside, with no place to go, no place to go,
To dry her eyes, broken inside

Her feelings she hides, her dreams she can't find,
She's losing her mind, she's falling behind,
She can't find her place; she's losing her faith,
She's falling from grace; she's all over the place

She wants to go home, but nobody's home,
That's where she lies, broken inside, with no place to go, no place to go,
To dry her eyes. Broken inside

She's lost in the sight, lost in the sight,
She's lost in the sight, lost in the sight…”

Sakura finished singing, hearing the gentle notes reverberate through the air and they seemed to go to her very heart. Then, a knocking sound came to her ears. She turned her head to the door, which was locked of course, and in the crack underneath the door, she could see a shadow.

“Sakura…come out or I'm coming in.” someone called through the door.

Sakura frowned as she recognized the voice. It was Hatori. Still she sighed, got up and unlocked the door. She opened it just a crack to look up at the doctor.

“What?” she asked.

“Can I come in? I need to talk to you about something.” Hatori asked.

Sakura looked at him suspiciously, before opening the door.

Hatori entered and looked at her, then said, “Sakura, Setsuna told me what you said to her this morning.”

Sakura bristled, but her voice remained level. “And?”

“I know you probably never heard this six years ago, but Mariabella made me promise her something, before… I had to suppress her memories.”

“And what's that? To make my life miserable?” Sakura asked hotly.

“No. She asked me to take care of you and never let you get hurt.”

Sakura was caught totally off-guard, but she only let it show through a slight widening of her eyes.

“You don't do a good job.” Sakura retorted.

“No, but that's because I had already caused you the greatest hurt that anyone ever could by erasing her memories. It tore me apart to do it and I never meant you to see it.” Hatori told her.

“So you meant to hide it from me? Lie and say that it was an accident?” Sakura asked, her voice rising a little.

“No, I meant to tell you when you were older and I thought you could handle it. But that was my mistake. I should know that nothing would soften the pain.”

“You still broke your promise! You promised her and you broke it. She trusted you!” Sakura said angrily.

“I couldn't keep my promise as well as I would hope because you isolated yourself. You isolated yourself so much that no one would hear little more then angry words and greetings from you. It hurts us as much as it hurt you to know that you can't trust us and that's what led you to hide the cure from the family.” Hatori told her gently.

Sakura had no response to that and she stared out the window, not seeing anything. Her mind was whirling with questions, accusations, and guilt. She had been angry at Hatori, seeing the pain in his eyes, knowing that it killed him to do that to Mariabella. If there was anyone to be angry at, it was herself and Akito, who had given the order for her sister's memory to be erased. As Hatori was walking out the door, Sakura said, “Hatori-san…thank you and…I'm sorry.”

He gave her a rare, sad smile and closed the door.
