Fruits Basket Fan Fiction ❯ Dreams ❯ Dreams ( Chapter 1 )

[ P - Pre-Teen ]

He awoke suddenly. The dream was just a blur in his mind but he was shaking. It was something he was accustomed to but that didn't mean he enjoyed it. He sighed then started to move. It was the only way to appease the fear.
He wandered from his room down the hall, glad that everyone slept soundly on nights like this. His eyes strayed for a mere moment to another door before he approached it and opened it quietly. He smiled to himself at how she looked when she slept. He walked into her room and closed the door quietly behind him. I'll only stay for a few moments he told himself. Just long enough to ease the fear and pain the dreams caused.
He took a chair from the corner and pulled it closer to her bed. He sat down and leaned his head on his hand. He smiled gently as he watched her sleep. Was it always like this? His thoughts wandered to when she came and how he did not really think about it. It was remarkable that things could change so fast.
Before he knew it, he was asleep in the chair.

She woke up before him. Her eyes took a minute to clear but when they did, they went wide seeing him laying there. His form was slumped in the chair but he was half leaning on her bed as well. She smiled. Whenever he had a bad day, he'd find her. She figured he just had a restless night.
“Yuki?” she asked quietly. Her hand was on his shoulder but she didn't want to wake him. “I'm sorry,” she whispered as she shook him softly. He awoke dreamily and looked at her for a long moment before he registered.
“Morning…” he groaned and he slowly got up and stretched. He never slept extremely well, but for some reason his back was hurting.
“Morning!” she chimed. “Uh… Yuki? Was there a reason you came in here last night?” she looked puzzled and just waited for him to wake up some more.
He looked at her, “here?” he repeated. Then he looked around. “Oh. Gomen, Tohru. I don't know what it was. I must have walked in my sleep.” He smiled slightly but she could see that something haunted was in his eyes.
“Yuki... You know, if you ever need to talk, even in the middle of the night…” she paused and smiled brightly. “It was different waking up with you there.”
He sighed and smiled back at her. “Head on down, I'll be there in a few.” He murmured. She smiled again as she watched him walk out the door.
When Yuki was reached his own room, he leaned against the door. He breathed realizing how much he loved to see her smile in the morning. He shook his head and got ready for the rest of the day.

“Yuu-kii?” Shigure's voice called.
The boy opened his door and peeked out. “Yes?”
“I heard someone sneaking through the house at night…” Shigure smiled waiting for Yuki to draw to the bait.
“Really?”
“It came from your room Yuki… and the footsteps seemed to move to another room…”
Yuki shook his head. “I had a dream… and I woke up.” He said as if that was all to it.
“Oh? Hmm. And I thought it was funny seeing how Kyo acted this morning.”
Yuki raised his head interested but didn't say a word.
“He left, a bit ago. Grumbling something about Tohru.”
Yuki sighed and walked out the house.

“YUKI!” he heard a thin voice call. She ran to him her hair billowing out in the wind. He smiled as he waited for her.
“I thought you left” he said quietly.
Her eyes were blank when he said that. “Why?”
He chuckled slightly, almost cruelly. “Because Kyo already left.”
She smiled and shrugged. “He left before I went downstairs. I hope he is ok.” She said.
Yuki didn't believe that b ut her worry was pure. “We'll be late if we take any longer.” She squeaked and they walked rather quickly to school.

At school Kyo was overly quiet and he kept giving Yuki dirty looks. Yuki shook his head every time he caught one. Stupid cat, he thought. He sighed knowing that the cat wasn't going to be this quiet later.
“Kyo-kun…” Yuki heard.
“WHAT?” the cat snapped.
“Is everything ok?” Tohru asked politely.
Yuki got up and walked over, “Quit sulking Stupid.” He stated.
If Kyo was in his cat form his hair would have bristled. It looked like it was even in this form and Yuki smiled slightly at that. He couldn't help but be amused by the look on the cat's face. “You want to repeat that?” he yelled.
“What? That you are stupid?”
“Yuki-kun…” Tohru said slightly. “Kyo-kun…”
“You want to fight? Is that it?” Kyo started to raise from his chair.
Yuki gave one look at Tohru's increasing distress, sighed and walked back to his own seat. “Why would I want to fight you?”
“Kyo, please, calm down.” Tohru's voice started to break through to the cat and he calmed himself enough to sit down again and pout. “What's wrong?” she tried again.
“Well, isn't it obvious? I saw you last night.” He mumbled.
Tohru blinked and glanced at Yuki's face which was slightly red. “Nothing happened last night. I don't know what you are talking about.” She said quietly and returned to her own seat. The rest of the class filed back in from their quick break and class began again.

As class ended, Tohru watched as Kyo took off. She packed her things and started to follow him when Yuki grabbed her arm gently.
“Stupid cat, he should at least walk you home. Do you mind waiting here then I can walk with you? I will only be a few moments” Yuki said gently.
Tohru smiled and replied, “I don't want to bother you. I can make it back ok on my own.”
Yuki gave her a glance before he murmured, “I'd feel better if you waited.” Then he walked off to his student council meeting.
She smiled slightly and settled her books again. Something changed, she knew it. Kyo hasn't pouted in a while, she thought, and Yuki having bad dreams? She never heard of it. She sighed and tried to think about something else.

“You waited.”
“Yes, I didn't want you to worry.”
He smiled at her and waited a moment while she grabbed her things. “Ready?” he asked.
She nodded before she started following him out.
“I hope you don't mind but I need to make a quick stop.” He told her.
“I don't mind at all.” Tohru replied. “Yuki, did I do something wrong?”
He laughed slightly and looked at her. “Why would you ever think that? You haven't done anything.” She smiled and they started walking in a relative quiet.
After a few moments he stopped. “Wait here.” Yuki walked into the shop returning after only a minute. He smiled at her and they walked the rest of the way home without any problems.

Kyo strutted in front of Shigure. “Why are they taking so long? Do you think something happened?”
Shigure laughed. “Everything will be fine Kyo. Don't worry. Yuki is picking up something.”
Kyo gave Shigure a look before he sat down. “You mean that rat couldn't pick it up early?”
“Well, you took off so early this morning that Yuki had to walk with her then, and now she's walking with him home…”
Kyo mumbled something inaudible before he resigned himself to stare at the roof. A moment later Tohru and Yuki walked in.
“Oh hi! What would you like me to cook for dinner?” She said suddenly.
“Tohru, sit down. We need to talk about something.” Shigure said seriously.
Her eyes went wide and she sat quickly at the table. “Is everything ok?”
He broke out into a smile and slid a small package across the table. “You didn't tell anyone it was your birthday.”
Kyo handed her another small package while he waited for her to open Shigure's gift. “Sorry.” He stated.
Tohru looked at Shigure's maid uniform and smiled. Yuki and Kyo both hit Shigure for the gift. She then opened Kyo's gift. It was a mirror. She thanked him and admired it's details. Yuki sat down next to her before he slid an even smaller box into her hand. She glanced at him and opened it.
She held up the small chain and looked at the charm carefully. Yuki took the necklace from her and clipped it around her neck. She thanked him too and the group went out to dinner that night.

When they came back, The kids went up to their respective rooms to work on homework. After a bit, Tohru heard a knock on her door. “Come in” she called.
Yuki stepped into her room. “Hi. Do you need any help?”
“Um… No, I think I have it..” She said quietly.
“I… didn't show you something.” He sat next to her on the bed and reached across to the necklace he put around her neck. His fingers played with the charm for a moment before it opened to reveal a couple of pictures. One was of her mother and the other was of Yuki, Tohru, and Kyo. “I hope you don't mind the pictures I chose. I also borrowed your picture last night. They copied it and I put it back…”
Tohru's eyes were wet and she looked at the boy sitting next to her. “Thank you.” She said. He smiled back and waited another moment before he leaned over and kissed her.
“Well, uh.. goodnight.” He smiled and walked out the door. Tohru sat for a moment in shock and then she followed him to his room.
“Yuki?” she said against the door. His eyes went wide at her voice but he opened the door regardless.
She leaned over and kissed him. Then she smiled slightly. He looked at her and whispered, “I love you.”
“I care for you” she said back. Well, Yuki thought, It wasn't the response he wanted, but at least she didn't run away like in his dream.
