Crazy Forgien Soldiers:
“ Is he an Islam, do you think?”
“ I don't think so, probably Japanese if you ask me.”
“ Nobody asked you, you blood-sucking leech.”
“ Well, nobody asked you either, so go fuck your mother.”
“ Why I ought'a-“
“ Knock it off you two, your antics are disgusting.”
“ He started it.”
“ No, seriously you guys, General is gonna hear you if you keep it up like that.”
“ You, kid, stuff it. I'm not in the mood.”
“ Are you looking for a fight?”
“ Maybe, maybe not.”
“ Did I not say to knock it off?”
“ Dude, chink, get that stick out of your ass.”
“ Alright, that is it-“
There were a million voices, at least, I thought so. In fact there were only four. I blearily opened my eyes, my brain was still trying to adjust to the rough, American english that these four soldiers were speaking.
“ Nan desu ka?” ( What is it?)
All four of them stopped quariling immediately.
While they observed me, I also observed them. Four men, outfitted like soldiers, right down to their dogtags.
The first one who had spoken was no more than a boy. He had curious golden eyes, with more flecks of amber than Aya's eyes had. Soft, California dirty-blond hair framed his face, and there was a hawk's feather beaded into his hair above his left ear. His skin was fair with some freckles, and his name was Tobias Avian.
The second one was tall. I've never seen anyone that tall in all my life. Taller than Ha'ri, I learned that Jamie Peterson easily towered seven and a half feet into the sky. Around his neck was a tiny golden cross that looked so fragile on so big a man. He had short, golden hair that hung into his deep blue eyes. Jamie was lean despite his height, and pale as any Vampire.
The next man was Andre Lopez, a Mexican immigrant who hated Jamie with a raging passion. His skin was a little darker than mine, and I guessed he had some Asian in him. He had cold brown eyes, wary of danger in every shadow. His lank, black hair copied mine exactly, and for a moment, I was afraid I was looking at my own corpse. He wore a red tie tied around his forehead like a kamikaze warrior, and his constant fiddling with it's ends nearly drove me into madness.
But the last man was the oddest of them all, Gabriel Li. Half Chinese, half Japanese, and one percent American, Gabriel was white. I mean, really really white. His whole uniform was bleached white, his hair, his eyebrows, damn, even his eyelashes were white! I didn't doubt for a moment that he was the Angel Gabriel sent to do God's work on Earth. Jamie's ally and Andre's enemy, Gabriel had Asian skin and red eyes that burned into you like ice. You don't think of ice burning, but it does. Around his neck was a necklace that had the small figure of a Dragon clinging to the chain. He said it was from his fiancee.
“ What did he say?” Asked Andre from the shadows of the tent's corner.
“ He said, ` ?Que va?'.” Jamie answered, taking pleasure in annoying his rival.
“ I didn't ask you-“
It was about to start all over again, so I figured I had to do something. It was just like handling Yuki and Kyo, I realized, only they're grown-ups!
I silently thanked God for my gift of tongues.
“ ?Donde Estoy? ?Quien son tu gente?” ( Where am I? Who are you people?) Okay, so maybe my Spanish wasn't that good.
So I switched to English, and then their whole world opened up before me like a bottomless pit.

“ Where am I? And who are you guys anyway?” I managed to ask, remembering that only the British speak English formally.
“ Well, I'll be shit-faced. The bastard Japper can speak civilized English after all.” Andre spat venomously. I could tell he was still itching for an excuse to fight, but I wasn't the one who would give him that chance.
“ Shut up Andre, you know that you are not impressing anyone with your street-talk.” Gabriel snapped at him, his red eyes piercing and his English formal. “ Gomen nasai, -San, he is still learning his manners.”
Jamie kicked off his boots, and plopped down on his cot, trying not to smile.
Now that my head wasn't threatening to explode on me, I figured it was safe to sit up and look around.
I saw that the tent was rather large, accomodating four sleeping cots and make-shift table in the middle for papers and the such. Everything was painted with camoflague, except Gabriel of course.
I noticed that I was occupying one of the four cots. Jamie was trying to stretch out on his, obviously reaching his toes over into Andre's personal bubble for amusement. Mine was by the tent flap, Jamie's was at my feet, the other corner held Andre and across from me was…
Oh, no.
Not him.
Please God, you sent us all the way out here only to blow up my helicopter, and why, oh WHY did you have to save him too?
Jamie jerked his thumb in Kureno's direction, “ Friend of yours?”
I shook my head, “ No. Familia, hai. Amigo, iie.”
The giant man nodded with a half-concealed smile. “ Wakarimasu.” ( I understand.)
Once I explained who I was, where I was from, and what had happened to me, everyone seemed to relax. I could tell that Tobias was still bursting with questions, but he held them back under Gabriel's quiet stare.
The sky, which I had not been paying much attention to, was darkening. I figured that I must have been knocked out for most of the day. Kureno moaned a few times, was given water, and lapsed back into unconciousness.
Good, I thought, I hope he stays that way until he dies.
Andre left the tent at sundown for his watch, eyeing Jamie suspiciously until he was all the way out.
“ What crawled up his ass?” I asked, curious.
Jamie gave a great barking laugh that I've grown rather fond of over the years. “ Me.” He anwsered with a twinkle in his eyes.
Switching the subject, because now Gabriel's glare was coming in my direction. “ So, what animals does everyone have?” It was a perfectly normal question to me, and I couldn't see what was so funny about it.
Jamie laughed uproarously until he had tears in his eyes. “ Well Shigure, we're really just a rag-tag bunch of misfits, and we all joined for different reasons. I'm a Wolf, or close enough. And I joined so I could kill people. Gabriel's a Rat, the lucky chink bastard. He joined because he was in NYC when IT happened.”
“ You know I hate it when you call me that.”
“ Gomen-ne, neh?”
“ Whatever.”
“ Anyho, Gabby-chan here-“
“ And I hate that worse.”
“ Stuff it old man. Anyho, Gabriel's father died in the WTC, so he's out for some quiet revenge.”
I could see the Dog in Jamie, but not the Wolf, he seemed gentle enough. Gabriel, now that I thought about it, did have some of Yuki's traits. “ What's `quiet revenge.'?” I asked, puzzled.
“ It's where you go out, do your duty, kill a few Islams, and don't swell up your ego so big you choke on it.”
“ Oh.”
“ Tobias is a Hawk, plain an' simple, but you won't find any Avian reserve on him, he's all bounce and no glue.”
Jamie exchanged a grin with Tobias who was fingering the Hawk feather in his hair. “ I joined because I wanted to show all the medals I'm gonna win to my girlfriend, Raven.” His voice was somewhere between Momiji's and Hatsuharu's, a strange but fitting combination.
“ Now Andre, well, he's just the Stick Up My Ass. Or, you could call him a Flesh-Eating Scarab Beetle.” Jamie snickered at some inner private joke. " I could call him a lot of things, but none of them seem to match exactly. He could be the Scheming Rat, the Sex-Driven Dog, or the Hot-Headed Ox, but I prefer Bastard. It's true down to his bones, and hits just as hard."
Jamie laughed, and it was a deep rumbling sound in his chest. Like thunder. I saw him glance toward the tent flap, probably to the exact point where Andre must have been standing. He smiled at me.
" Don't worry about it, neh? Cest la vi."
" Hai." I responded. " But what's going to happen to Kureno and me now?"
Jamie's brow furrowed for a moment. " Well, I guess you're staying with us. Our special mission is to find Osama bin Laden… and kill him." He leaned back against his cot. " It's not the killing I mind, just the waiting to do it."
He grinned wolfishly at me, and I was unfathomably glad that Jamie Peterson was my friend and not my enemy.
" Gabriel-san, " I asked. " Why do you think I ended up here?" I felt like I needed to find a reason for what had happened to me. Whether it was Destiny, Fate, or who-knows-what, I wanted to be ready for whatever the future brought my way. But Gabriel summed it up in one word.
" Karma."
He was right, it was my karma.
And the war had only just begun.
