I Put Your Picture Away
A Rin-Haru Song Fan Fic
A/n: This story takes place right after Rin broke up with Haru…so about volume 8. I laced it will Sheryl Crow's “I Put Your Picture Away”. I decided, neither of them would use the other's name, but you can totally tell their talking about each other. I thought it was a nice touch. Hopefully this will make you cry. That's what I'm aiming for. Review and tell me what you think!
All right. Bold = Haru's verses
Italics = Rin's verses
Bold and Italics = both
Haru sat at the bar in the hotel. Sure, he was underage…but that didn't stop him from getting a fake ID and attempting to drink her away. Three days. He'd told his parents he was staying at Shigure's house, and Sensei and the two other male residents kept up the ruse; understanding he needed his time. Tohru hadn't been told.
“Hey,” a female voice said behind him. He wheeled around on the hotel bar stool to see a striking collage student with flippy, shoulder-length brunette hair.
“Hey,” he said half heartedly.
“You wanna buy me a drink?” She asked, batting her long, over-mascara-ed eyelashes at him.
“No money,” he said truthfully. The family account he had was paying for his room. He had no pocket money left for this month. The girl giggled musically.
“Then how about I buy you a drink?”
“I could always use another drink,” he said with a sad smile. She returned it.
“Bad day?” She asked, motioning the bartender to get another beer.
“More like bad couple of days…my girlfriend broke up with me,” She shattered my world.
“Then you finish your drink,” she said as the bartender opened the cap to the bottle, “and how about I try to brighten up your day?” She batted her lashes again.
“I don't know…” he said uncertainly. Does she know I'm only sixteen?
“C'mon. I can tell you're hurting right now. You need to feel good.” Haru didn't think. He just acted.
“All right.” Her smile widened.
“In that case…another beer over here, please!”
Livin' my life in a slow hell
Different girl every night at the hotel
I ain't seen the sunshine in
Three damn days
The girl shut the door behind her with her foot as they came up for air. She reached into her purse and pulled out a cigarette.
“Want one?”
“No thanks,” he said quickly.
“Do you mind?” Haru watched the flame of the lighter inch closer and closer to the cigarette.
“No.” She puffed a large cloud of smoke into the room and sighed, sitting down onto the bed, pulling him by the shirt collar.
“Now don't be shy, honey. Loosen up,” and kissed him again.
Been fuelin' up on cocaine and whisky
Wish I had a good girl who missed me
Thought: I wonder if I'll ever
Change my ways
Haru tried to focus on nothing but what she was doing to him…but her face kept popping into his mind. He looked up at the ceiling, trying to control his breathing. He looked over to the edge of the bed…and it must've fallen out of his pocket, because there was the picture of them, when they were kids. She was jump roping and he was trying to step on the rope; trying to mess her up.
Haru quickly lashed out a hand and swept the picture onto the floor. The girl looked up.
“You okay?”
“Just fine,” he replied. She giggled. “Oh, what's your name by the way?”
“Haru,” he said, the word disintegrating as she resumed what she had been doing. She stopped again.
“Nice to meet you, Haru. I'm Rachel.” Haru didn't respond…he couldn't. Since she'd dragged her body up his, it was kind of hard to form words around her lips. He fought back the tears.
I put your picture away
Sat down and cried today
I can't look at you while I'm lying
Next to her

“Hey, Rin!” She heard the shout and looked around. It was Yuki. She knew she'd passed Shigure's house but she didn't think anyone was home, or had seen her.
“What do you want?” She snapped. She had somewhere to be... someone to be…someone who was over him.
“Why did you—” She cut him off.
“Look if this is about him I don't want to hear it, okay?”
“I know he's strong, but seeing him like that…You almost killed him, Rin,” Yuki said quietly, staring straight into her as she averted her gaze.
“Shut up!” She shouted at him.
“He's at a hotel right now. Probably trying to get some cheap girl to try and get over you. But it's not going work! I saw how much he was hurting when he came to talk to me at school!”
“Shut up, shut up, SHUT UP!” She screamed.
“Why'd you do it, Rin?” He yelled as she turned away and started to run, “Why'd you break his heart!?”
“Shut the fuck up!”
I caught you last night in the hotel
Everyone knows but they won't tell
But their half-hearted smiles tell me somthin'
Just ain't right
“God dammit!” She swore loudly at the bar she stopped at. She gulped a large portion of the glass of wine she'd ordered. If he'd just come ask me…if he'd just come see me and tell me “Please, I love you…Let me come home.”...oh God. “How did I survive three days without you?” She whispered to herself.
I've been waiting on you for a long time
Fuelin' up on heartaches and cheap wine
I ain't heard from you in
Three damn nights
She could get over him. She could and she would. It would be best for him if they both moved on. She rolled down then window of the car she was in, breathing in the fresh night air.
“So what's your name, hon?” The guy who'd picked her up asked. He had dark hair, dark eyes, and an air of classiness.
“R—” she hesitated, “Isuzu.”
“Isuzu? Like with bells?”
“Yah,” she replied.
“That's a pretty name.” She flinched.
“Thanks.” She opened her purse to take out her compact mirror to put on some lips gloss. Searching through the compartment in it, she pulled out the mirror finally. Stuck to it though, was a crumpled picture of them. She was jump roping, and he was trying to step on the rope; trying to mess her up. She almost started to cry right then and there, but quickly she shoved it back into the recesses of her purse.
“You okay?” He asked.
“I'm fine,” she replied and he laughed. “What's your name?” She asked, trying to distract herself from the image of the smiling little boy.
“I'm Sasuke.”
“Nice to meet you,” she said. He pulled the car into the driveway of a hotel.
“This is where I'm staying.” He motioned to the neon lights.
“Then what are we waiting for?” She asked.
I put your picture away
I wonder where you've been
I can't look at you while I'm lyin'
Next to him
I put your picture away

I can't look at you while I'm lyin'
Next to him
“I'm up on this floor,” Sasuke said stepping out of the elevator and leading her by the hand down the hall. Rin stopped suddenly. Up ahead, a door opened and he stepped out, a brunette girl following him.
“That was amazing, Haru.” She said, kissing him softly.
“I'll call you, Rachel,” he said, slipping his shirt over his head.
“Isuzu? You coming?” Sasuke asked.
“Yah, yah, I just…thought I saw somebody I knew,” she said kept walking.
I saw you yesterday with an old friend
“That was amazing, Haru,” she said, leading him out the door and handing him his shirt and kissing him. But it was nothing compared to me and her…
“I'll call you, Rachel,” he said passively, pulling on his shirt, and heading down the hall. He heard the door shut behind him.
No one will ever be the same…
It was the same old same I with you been
She saw him walking towards her. She averted her eyes, feeling tears clouding up. She almost screamed the words whirling around and around in her head: Oh, God, oh, God, I love you. I miss you so much.
He saw her and sucked in his breath. There was a man holding her hand, leading her down the hall. He saw her avert her eyes, and he did like-wise, feeling the tears stinging in his eyes. He almost shouted the words banging around inside his skull: Oh, God, oh, God, I love you. I miss you so much.
Since you've been gone my world's been:
Dark and grey
Haru stuffed a hand into his pocket, feeling the picture, crumpled but there. Her smile…he could almost feel it on the paper. Back before everything was so hard…back when love was as easy as breathing.
Haru wiped his eyes and continued walking, refusing to look back.
You reminded me of brighter days
Rin could barely keep from crying. She squeezed Sasuke's hand, pretending it was Haru's. I wished he'd punched this guy in the face and said: “What are you doing with my girlfriend?!” Oh, God, I wish he had just said something. I wish he had kissed me. Oh, God, come home… But she wiped her eyes and continued walking, refusing to look back.
I hope you were comin' home to stay
I was headed to church…
God, that just made it worse, Haru thought. Back to the bar, I guess, he relented as he headed to the elevator.
I was off to drink you away!
* * *
Haru was back home the next morning and he couldn't stop. Why won't she get out of my head?
Rin had snuck back through the bedroom window at Kagura's house that night at five AM. It was morning but she hadn't slept. She'd though about nothing but him. Why won't he get out of my head?
I thought about you for a long time
Can't seem to get you off my mind
Why do I hurt myself like this…? Haru wondered.
...when I'm already hurting so much? Rin wondered.
I can't understand why we're living
Life this way
Haru drug the picture out of his jean pocked and propped it up on the pillow as he lay in his bed and just stared at it.
I'd do anything, he thought, anything to get you back…but it's not possible…
Rin searched through her purse until she found the picture and propped it up on the pillow as she lay in her bed and just stared at it.
I'd do anything, she thought, anything to get you back…but it's not possible…
I found your picture today
I swear I'll change my ways
Haru pulled out the silver cell phone he rarely used and flipped it open. He scrolled through to the address book.
1. 555-7643 - RIN
No one else was listed. He set the phone on the bed and stared at it until the screen's light went out. He sighed and picked it up again…but then set it down. Finally he picked it up and without another word, pressed the send button.
I just called to say I want you
Come back home
Rin cried. She couldn't stand to look at his smiling face…even from back when the only troubles they had were not getting macaroni and cheese for lunch. She cried because he thought she didn't love him. Rin cried.
I found you picture today
I swear I'll change my ways
It sounded like it rang for a million years. He didn't know if he wanted her to pick up or not. He was about to cancel the call when a small voice whispered:
“Hello?” Haru was silent. He had nothing to say. This had been a mistake. “Har—?” he flipped the phone shut. It sounded like she had been crying. Her voice had cracked. It always cracked after she'd been crying. She cried a lot before too. But this time there was nothing he could do to console her. Angry tears burned in his eyes. He took the picture in his hands and yelled:
“WHY?!” And tore the picture in half. And in half again. And again and again and again until there was nothing left but confetti bits. He launched the pieces into the air and punched his pillow with helpless anger and pain. “Why?”
I love you…I miss you…Let me come home…
I just called to say I want you
Come back home
Her purse started to vibrate. That must be my phone, she thought. She dug through her bag, having a bit of trouble finding it. Finally she pulled it out and flipped it open without checking the caller ID.
“Hello?” Her voice cracked. Her voice always cracked after she'd been crying. She heard silence on the other end…nothing but deep breathing. “Har—?” a loud click and then the dial tone reached her ear. Tears welled up in her eyes and spilled down her face.
“I love you,” she whispered into the dead phone.
I just called to say I loveyou
Come back home
