Fruits Basket Fan Fiction ❯ Lost My Sister in San Francisco ❯ Flightplans ( Chapter 2 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]
And now chapter two. And you know what...I have this whole fic planned out already. I like it and I hope you all will too. And I do not own Fruits Basket, once again, as I have said many times before. So without further ado, here’s chapter two.

----

“This place is too damn crowded.” Kyou mumbled annoyingly as he stood in the airport.

“Well you wanted to go see Kasumi.” Shigure smiled lightly. He looked around the airport as if he was expecting something to happen.

“Are you looking for someone?” Yuki asked.

“What?” Shigure blinked. “No. Of course not.”

“Kyou!” A familiar voice called from the crowd.

“Ah hell...” Kyou groaned, recognizing the voice instantly.

Kokoro ran over to them with a smile on her face. “Hey!”

“What are you doing here, Kokoro?” Kyou asked.

“I’m–...Wait a minute...what are you doing here?” Kokoro questioned.

“None of your business.” Kyou said.

“Likewise.” Kokoro remarked with a smirk.

“I’m going to California to go see Kasumi, you idiot.” Kyou growled.

“Oh really?” Kokoro blinked.

“What a coincidence!” Sachiko laughed as she walked over with Kippei. “So are we.”

“Really, Sachiko?” Shigure laughed. “What a surprise.”

“Wow, you’re coming too?” Tohru smiled.

“It seems that way.” Sachiko smiled, looking to Shigure with a ‘You didn’t tell them we were all going?’ look.

Shigure returned the look with a ‘You didn’t either.’ look of his own.

“Why do I have the distinct feeling that this was all planned?” Yuki looked between the two adults.

“Planned? What ever gave you that idea, Yuki?” Sachiko laughed. “You’re so funny.”

“Look, we’re supposed to be boarding the plane!” Kokoro pointed to the chart on one of the walls that listed their flight. “Come on!” Out of nowhere she grabbed Kyou’s hand and pulled him with her as she ran to get on the plane.

The others followed them onto the plane.

“Sit with me, Kyou! Pleeease!” Kokoro pleaded.

“Alright! Alright!” Kyou sat next to Kokoro. “What are you so excited about?”

“We’re going to see Kassie! Smile, will ya?” Kokoro smiled.

Kyou smiled lightly at the thought. “You think she’ll be glad to see us?”

“Are you kidding me?” Kokoro laughed. “She’ll be so excited. Especially to see you...after that goodbye five months ago.”

“Oh shut up.” Kyou growled. Now he knew he’d never hear the end of it.

“It was so cute. You said you loved her. It was just what she needed to hear, you know?” Kokoro looked out the window of the plane.

“...You think so?” Kyou blinked.

“I know so.” Kokoro said. She remembered what it was like to be pushed to say goodbye to someone she loved and cared for. “I’m so lucky, Kyou. You know that?”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Kyou looked to her.

“Even though we fight...I don’t know what I’d do if Kippei was taken away from me. I...I’d be so sad and torn apart.” Kokoro smiled sadly while looking to her feet. “That’s why I was scared this one time that...my parents were about to get a divorce. Because I knew they’d separate us. I’d go with my mom and Kippei would go with my dad. Luckily they didn’t...”

“They were about to get a divorce?”

“When I was eight.”

“Oh...”

“See...I would be upset if Kippei was taken away from me and moved just across town. But...Kasumi’s all the way across the Pacific Ocean. How do you do it, Kyou?”

“I–I...” Kyou started. A wave of guilt suddenly swept over him. He had forgotten that he had forgotten. And now he remembered. “I...forgot about her.” He admitted.

Kokoro’s eyes slightly widened as she tore her gaze from her feet to Kyou. “You did what?” She gasped.

“I forgot about her, okay?” Kyou growled. “I know, I know. Some brother I am.” He wanted to kick his own ass now. What brother forgot about his own sister? Yet this made him question...if he had nearly completely forgotten about Kasumi then why did she still insist on being so close to him? Unless she didn’t know that he had forgotten about her. That was a possibility. Maybe he wouldn’t have to tell her that he forgot about her.

“Well you know,” Kokoro started. “Some things are better off being forgotten. That way they don’t hurt as much.”

“Yeah but...then it makes it seem like I don’t care about her and I do care about her, it’s just...I don’t know!” Kyou ran his fingers through his orange hair.

“I know.” Kokoro smiled lightly. Her light brown eyes held some kind of similar understanding to what Kyou was saying. “You know...I’m glad that...you feel that you can tell me anything.”

Kyou blinked, looking to Kokoro.

“Just like I feel that I can tell you anything.” Kokoro smiled at him sweetly. “Don’t worry, I won’t tell.”

“Hey lovebirds!” Kippei turned around, standing on his knees on his seat in front of Kyou and Kokoro.

“Kippei, shut up!” Kokoro pushed Kippei’s head back, messing up his already messy brown hair. “Seriously, Kippei, are you gonna see your girlfriend with your hair all messed up like that?”

“Kasumi’s not my girlfriend!” Kippei yelled.

“She’d better not be.” Kyou said on impulse.

“Well, well, Kyou. Was that a protective brother tone I heard in your voice?” Shigure teased from his seat.

“Shut up!” Kyou yelled.

“Kokoro, leave your brother alone. Kippei, turn around and sit back. Shigure dear, try not to make Kyou angry.” Sachiko laughed lightly.

“This is going to be a long flight.” Yuki sighed from his seat, across the aisle from Kyou and Kokoro.

“But it’ll be really fun, don’t you think, Yuki? I’ve never been on a plane before.” Tohru smiled.

Yuki smiled lightly, looking to Tohru. “I suppose so, Miss Honda.”

“I can’t believe I’m actually going to America.” Tohru giggled. “This is so exciting.”

“Remember, one stop in Taiwan then we head for California. We should be there by tomorrow morning.” Sachiko reminded.

“Please buckle your seat belts and stay seated throughout the flight. Flight 78 to San Francisco, California is now taking off.” the intercom announced.

The next morning

“We’re lost.” Yuki insisted as the group wandered around the city aimlessly, searching for ‘Sohpronia’s Boarding School for Girls’.

“No we’re not, we’re just don’t know where we are.” Kokoro tried to joke. She looked around the city. Who knew San Francisco was so big? There were buildings everywhere. Anyone could get lost there. It was amazing that so many people lived and knew their way around.

“Near the shoreline.” Kyou remembered. “Her school’s near the shoreline of the ocean.”

“Are you sure, Kyou?” Tohru blinked.
“Yeah.” Kyou nodded. “She told me that when that she was little she–...” Kyou stopped himself.

“I would go to the beach everyday and look out to the ocean. I’d always think, ‘You know, maybe if I swim fast and far enough, I’ll be home again.’” Kasumi had confided in Kyou.

Another wave of guilt washed over him again. Everyday meant she never forgot about him for a single day. While back in Okinawa, he almost instantly forgotten about her for years. But this never happened to him before. What was it about Kasumi that made him feel guilty about missing out on a lot of important things in her life? What was it about her that made him feel empty when she was gone?

“Well if it’s around the shoreline, then that’s where we’re headed.” Sachiko took the lead. She stopped after a few paces and turned around to look back at the group. “Which way is the shoreline?” She blinked.

“Hmm...” Kokoro looked around. She closed her eyes and concentrated for a moment. “I say...this way!” She pointed in a direction. “The Pacific ocean is in that direction.”

“Do you sense the ocean or something?” Kyou arched a brow.

“What? Because I’m a crab and Cancer is a water sign? ...Nah, it’s just common sense. The Pacific ocean is to the west.” Kokoro smiled.

It took the group another couple of hours to finally find the school. And it was a huge school. Muddy brown brick was piled up twenty-three stories high in the first building, about thirty stories in the building behind it. They were connected by two hallways; one on the ground and one above ground. There was another building with a hallway connected to the second building with the word “GYMNASIUM” in big letters at the top. Not to mention the track and field outside in front of the gym.

Kokoro whistled as she looked at the school. “Dayam, Sachiko. Why couldn’t you send me to a place like this for school?”

“You want me to?” Sachiko looked to her niece. Both knew Kokoro wasn’t an all-girls’ school type of girl. She needed men in her life, even if she couldn’t have one.

“Nah.” Kokoro shook her head. “Let’s go inside. Hopefully Kassie’s home.” She smiled.

“Do you even know which room is her’s?” Yuki asked.

“Building A, floor thirteen, room number 361. And it’s her’s and Dawn’s room. Not just her’s.” Kokoro smirked victoriously. Kasumi had written down all the information in her letter to Kokoro.

“Who’s Dawn?” Tohru asked.

“Her roommate and best friend over here.” Kokoro explained. “She has a sister named Anita whose parents own a ranch outside of town which they visit every other weekend and have been taking Kasumi along since she was seven.”

“How the hell do you know this stuff?” Kyou questioned Kokoro. It was strange that she knew more information than he did about Kasumi’s school life. Possibly even her personal life. But how? And why? Then again, personal things weren’t really Kyou’s department in anyone’s life. That was more of either a mom or older sister department, not an older brother one. And Kasumi didn’t have either one so Kokoro was the closest thing.

“I just do.” Kokoro smiled. “There are many things Kassie tells me that you don’t know. Come on, let’s go inside.” She led them all inside the first building.

They walked into the elevator. Shigure pressed the button for the thirteenth floor. Slowly, the elevator made its way up, finally stopping at the thirteenth floor. The doors opened and they stepped out. Looking down both halls, they realized no one was in sight.

“What time is it?” Sachiko asked.

“Around eleven o’ clock.” Kokoro looked to a clock on the wall. “Why is there a clock in the middle of a hallway?”

“Should we even be in here? Shouldn’t we have gotten some kind of visitor pass or something?” Yuki asked.

“Yuki, where’s your sense of adventure?” Kokoro teased. “This way.” She led them down one hall to rooms numbered 356 through 370.

“There are a lot of rooms.” Tohru commented. Fourteen rooms a hallway, an average of twenty-eight rooms a floor. Hell yeah, there was a lot of rooms.

“So Yuki, you’re the smart one.” Kokoro sighed. “There’s an average of twenty-eight rooms to a floor, twenty-three floors in the first building, about thirty in the second, two girls to a room, how many students can fit in this place?”

“Um...” Yuki blinked at the question. Twenty-eight floors...no rooms to a...building? Kokoro spoke to fast and too much for Yuki to catch it all at once. After a moment of thinking, he finally figured out the problem. “A rough estimate of three thousand?”

“Is that to the nearest hundred or thousandth?” Kokoro questioned.

“Kokoro, quit badgering the smart one. You’re just jealous because you can’t figure it out yourself.” Kippei sighed.

“Can I help you?” A voice called from behind.

The group turned around to face a rather old woman. Her face had many wrinkles and small glasses were perched on her nose. The glasses were connected to a string that clipped onto the old woman’s flower-printed dress. She wasn’t lean but she wasn’t very large. She was just plump. She had a clipboard in one hand and a pen in the other. She was pretty short too.

“Uh, we’re looking for Kasumi Sohma.” Sachiko said, blinking.

“Kasumi? I believe she’s not here.” The woman said. “I’m Elise Cambridge, the headmistress of this school.”

“Nice to meet you.” Sachiko smiled. “I’m Sachiko Okurimono. I’m a friend of the family.”

“Nice to meet you, Sachiko. Kasumi isn’t in right now. The Hainsworth sisters took her out to try to cheer her up.” Elise explained.

“What’s wrong with her?” Kyou immediately asked. ‘Cheer her up’? Something had to be wrong with her. Why would Kasumi need cheering up? Did something happen?

“Who are you?” Elise asked, turning her attention to Kyou.
“This is Kyou Sohma.” Sachiko introduced. “Kasumi’s older brother.”

“Oh! I see the resemblance.” Elise smiled. “I’m sorry.”

“Yeah, yeah, now what’s wrong with Kasumi?” Kyou urged.

“Well you see...Kasumi hasn’t been doing very well in school lately...she–...”

“Miss Cambridge.” Another woman called. “I’ll take it from here, please...”

And there’s chapter two. Egh...who knew writing fanfiction could be such hard work? Rawr. I kinda feel like I’m not keeping the FB characters in character. I hate it when I do that. Agh. Well, I’m trying.
