Fruits Basket Fan Fiction ❯ Lost My Sister in San Francisco ❯ Let's Go Home ( Chapter 15 )
[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]
A/N - 07/25/06 So here it is. The last chapter. And just to think...I started this fic on June 12, 2006. And now, a month and thirteen days later, it’s over. Well, unless I don’t finish this chapter until tomorrow. Then it’s a month and fourteen days. And the first fic was first posted on March 18. So in about five months I’ve written a fanfic and it’s sequel. ...Wow. That’s all I have to say is, wow.
----
So this was it. In a few more hours, Kyou would be on a flight back to Japan, not to see Kasumi again until she visited him. He sighed as he stood in front of the window in the motel room. This couldn’t be happening. Everything went by too fast.
It was obvious Kippei was thinking the same thing as he sat on one of the beds, packing up his things. He let out a heavy sigh and stared at his suitcase. How long would he have to wait to see Kasumi again? This really wasn’t fair.
Sure, everyone was sort of upset about leaving Kasumi, but no one as much as Kyou, Kippei, and Kokoro. They didn’t want to leave Kasumi behind. Why did they have to leave already?
“So are you two gonna try the long-distance relationship thing or what?” Kyou asked Kippei without turning to look at him.
“I guess so.” Kippei shrugged. “We never really talked about it. I guess we never thought to. And you? How are you gonna hold up leaving your sister behind here?”
“I’ll survive.” Kyou shrugged. Or at least he hoped he would. He was always sure he would before, only because he didn’t know Kasumi that well back then. But now, after bonding with her the way he did, he wasn’t sure anymore.
“Come on you two. Smile, will ya?” Sachiko entered the room and walked over to Kippei. She handed him a bottle that contained his medicine. “Mizuko called me and said Ariel’s starting to get another fever, so keep that in your pocket just in case.”
“‘Kay.” Kippei took the bottle and shoved it in his jean pocket. He continued to put his stuff in his suitcase, looking at it sadly.
“Oh you two look as if your dog just died!” Sachiko sighed, placing her hands on her hips.
“If Shigure died, I wouldn’t look like this.” Kyou grumbled.
“You don’t mean that.” Sachiko shook her head. “Oh yeah, and Kokoro wants to talk to you, Kyou. She’s in the other room.”
“Alright.” Kyou nodded. Though he didn’t make any attempt to step away from the window.
“Today would be nice, Kyou.” Sachiko said.
Kyou sighed and pulled away from the window. He walked out of the room and went into the next one over. “You called?” He asked as he spotted Kokoro zipping up her bag. Tohru wasn’t in the room, she had gone for a walk with Yuki.
Kokoro stood up straight and turned to face Kyou. She buried her hands in her pockets and tried to smile. “So...what’re you gonna do?”
“What are you talking about?” Kyou questioned.
“Are you gonna just leave or are you gonna try to whisk Kasumi away back to Japan with us?” Kokoro joked, walking over to him.
“And just how would I do that?” Kyou asked in a bored tone.
“I’m just trying to lighten up the mood here, Kyou.” Kokoro shrugged sadly, turning away.
Kyou grabbed Kokoro’s wrist and turned her around to face him again, planting a soft kiss on her lips. “Sorry.” He apologized in a whisper as he slowly pulled away.
Kokoro looked up at him. “It’s alright. I understand.” She nodded, kissing him lightly. Finally she knew what it felt like. Her heart beat rapidly, she felt like she could melt on the spot. Her first kiss. Well, technically her second. Her first took place just moments before. She wanted to wrap her arms around him and hug him, but the stupid curses prevented her from doing so. “So what are you doing this afternoon?” She smiled lightly.
“Sitting on a plane to Okinawa, Japan.” Kyou smiled back.
“Really? Me too. Why don’t we sit next to each other?” Kokoro joked.
“Sounds like a good idea.” Kyou nodded.
“Kyou! Can you come here for a second?!” Shigure called from the other room.
Kyou sighed and shook his head lightly. Why was he going back and forth between rooms. “I’ll be right back.” He kissed Kokoro’s cheek lightly and walked out of the room.
“I want you to read this.” Shigure handed Kyou a folded sheet paper. The same paper he had acquired from Satsu.
Kyou took the paper and opened it up. He began to read the sloppy fourth grade handwriting of his sister.
‘This paper is supposed to be about what we want to be when we grow up. For me, it's more like who I want to be like.
When I grow up I want to be just like my brother, Kyou. It's been a while since I've seen him and he's probably changed but no matter what I want to be just like Kyou-oniichan.
Why? Because, Kyou-oniichan is the best big brother in the world to me, and if anyone else knew him like I did, I'd bet they'd think so too.
Kyou-oniichan is nice, fun, and...well...my oniichan. Some kids want to be like their favorite singer or actress, maybe even their mom or dad...but me, I'd rather be like my Kyou-oniichan.
Long ago, I was sent to this country and separated from Kyou-oniichan. I started school here and I only went back home once when I was eight. I don't know who it was that sent me here and took me away from my oniichan but that just wasn't nice. But if I'm good in school, maybe I can go back more often to see him.
Kyou-oniichan is pretty much the only one I have left. Mommy died a while back and Daddy...well...he doesn't like Kyou-oniichan much so I guess he doesn't like me either.
What else can I say to show how much I want to be like my oniichan? I don't think there are any words that can explain. I know this was supposed to be a two-page report but I'm going to have to cut it way short. No words can tell how much I adore my Kyou-oniichan so I'll have to leave it at that. (Even if I do get an F on this.)
~Kasumi Sohma’
“She wrote that seven years ago.” Shigure informed. “The truth was it wasn’t really supposed to be a two-page report, they were just given two sheets of paper to fill up and asked to write as much as they could. And the graded didn’t count against her average either. It was a test for all the fourth graders.”
Kyou read it over once more and then again. She wanted to be like him. Why did that surprise him so much? She followed him everywhere when they were together, so why did it surprise him? He sighed and looked at Shigure. “Why did you give me this now?”
“Well we just received it the night before last night.” Shigure shrugged. “And I didn’t want to disturb your fun at the festival either.”
He shook his head and turned away. “Let’s go pick her up so she can go to the airport with us like she wanted.”
“I’ll be sure to bring a box of tissues.” Shigure said jokingly. He smiled lightly, and there was something in that smile. A secret. A surprise. Something.
“Whose extra suitcase is that?” Yuki asked as he noticed an unfamiliar suitcase put to the side of the back of the car.
“Mine!” Sachiko declared. “I had to get another one. You know, I brung a lot of stuff and at first it fit all into one suitcase, but while putting it back, I needed another one.”
“I’m gonna go get Kasumi.” Kyou said, getting out of the car and going into the school building. He came back out a few minutes with Kasumi. They both got in the car and drove off to the airport. And just like before, the ride was long and quiet.
It wasn’t until they arrived at the airport that Tohru realized something. “Kasumi, how are you gonna get back to the school? Is someone gonna pick you up?”
Kyou’s eyes widened. He hadn’t even thought about it. He quickly looked to Kasumi.
Kasumi looked up at Shigure and Sachiko, a smirk appearing on her face. She giggled as she walked ahead of the others, getting into the line to board the plane. She turned to face Kyou and dug something out of her jacket pocket. “Hey Kitty kitty,” She smiled and looked to Kyou, taking out a plane ticket to Okinawa. “Let’s go home...”
Kyou’s eyes went even wider as he stared at the plane ticket in Kasumi’s hand. He was dreaming, right? And it wasn’t just him, but Kokoro, Kippei, Yuki, and Tohru too.
“Come on, I wanna go home already!” Kasumi declared loudly.
“You all had this planned all along, didn’t you? That extra suitcase was actually Kasumi’s.” Yuki accused Shigure and Sachiko.
“You caught us there, Yuki dear.” Sachiko smiled and laughed lightly. “Now let’s go home.”
“All of us.” Shigure nodded.
“Get over here, Kasumi!” Kyou ran over to the line with Kasumi, smiling. He ruffled her hair. “You knew about this and you didn’t say anything?!”
“It was a surprise!” Kasumi laughed, hugging Kyou.
“Alright. Let’s go home.” Kyou said with a smile, hugging Kasumi back tightly.

A/N - 07/25/06 Whee! Happy ending! Wow. Two chapters in one day. Who knew? Certainly not I. Yeah, I had this planned all along too. Well...that’s it. That’s. It. There’s not a continuation after this fic. That’s just it. HOWEVER, I am considering writing several other fics, I just don’t know which one to do first. There’s one where it tells what happened in between this one and the previous one. You know, how it was with Kokoro and all them going to Kyou, Yuki, and Tohru’s school. And then there’s a LOT that take place LONG after this fic. I’ll just have to do “Innie Minnie Miney Mo”, now won’t I? Goodbye for now, my friends! You shall hear from me again!
