It was Monday, the forth day that Sumi would be spending with the other Sohma's. It was nerve racking how much she had gone through with the Sohma's already. she already felt excepted.
She had come during golden week so she had plenty of time to prepare for her new school.
'School . . .' Sumi thought dreamily.
She had never been to school before. She was nervous, there was a high chance she could transform there. Sumi had thought about going to an all girls school, but she wouldn't know anyone. This way, she could at least be with Ryou.
Kenji had signed her up to go to the same high school as Ryou. He was a year younger than her, Sumi was a third year and Ryou was a secound. She was disapionted that they weren't in the same grade, but it was all right. Unfortunatly, Kaya was still in grade school, a fifth year.
Sumi woke up early that morning, it was her fist day every at school Sumi got out of bed and streched her arms out.
I've never been so excited and nervous at te same time! I thought it was impossible to feel two totally different emotions at once.'
She looked in her closet and got out her uniform.
She was told that the last generations of Sohma's had gone to the same highschool. At that thought she stopped. The last generation of Sohma's . . . it was something that no one had mentioned to her. She wondered if any were still alive.
She wondered if Kenji's mother or father was a member of the zodiac.
Then came another thought . . .
Ryou was adopted by Kenji's mother. But how? Don't they know who all the Sohma's are?
But . . . Sumi's parents weren't Sohma's. How is she one? And the Sohma family is very tight and strict. They would know who was and wasn'tin the family. And if she is in the family like they said . . . wouldn't she be related to them?
But with Ryou, Kenji, and Kaya . . . she hadn't felt the relative relationship. She just felt like friends.
She sighed. 'I'll ask Kenji later.'
She dashed down the stairs in her new school uniform. Sumi whore the normal long sleeved shirt, and a modest skirt. She wished she didn't lhave to show her legs or arms, the scars were very visible. It was school policy though and she didn't want to get into trouble on the first day.
Sumi went downstairs and saw that Kenji was the only one up.
He was sitting at the table with a cereal bowl. Kenji looked like he was tunning out everything around him. Sumi quetly walked by him and went to getherself some cereal. Kenji seemed oblivious to hert precence until she sat down next to him.
“Oh. Sumi, I didn't see you,” he said gazing at her.
“Sorry, you looked so peaceful, I couldn't disturb you.”
Sumi smiled and started eating her meal. Kenji smiled as well and continued eating his.
~~~~
Soon, Ryou and Kaya joined them and they all sat aroung the table quietly. They all shared glances and small coments with each other. It was calming and peaceful.
Kenji looked at the clock and started to get up.
“Well, my first class starts in half and hour. I should probably go.”
“Oh . . . so, Ryou and I will walk Kaya to school?” Sumi asked.
“Yes. I'll be back before you get home.” Kenji said getting his bag. He turned and smiled. “Bye guys.”
“Seeya Kenji!” Kaya shouted.
“Bye.” Sumi said as Ryou waved.
Ryou looked at the clock. It was almost time to go. “Alright, clean up. Almost time to go.”
“Ya! Sumi get's to walk me to school!”
~~~~
After dropping Kaya of at school and having her showing Sumi to all of her friends, Ryou and Sumi head off to highschool. The spring flowers were in bloom and it was so peaceul and sunny.
Sumi looked over at Ryou.
“What's highschool like?” she asked.
Ryou sighed, “Well, you have a bunch of different classes, in different classrooms. The kids are all idiots with unoriginal personalities. And all the teachers are stupid too.”
“Oh, come on. I'm sure it's not so bad.” Sumi smiled at him. “You must have some friends.”
“A couple.”
“Um . . . Ryou. Do you think I could meet your friends?” Sumi asked sweatly.
Ryou felt uneasy.
“Uh. I don't think so.”
“Why?”
“Because.”
“Because why?”
“Just because.” Ryou was blushing now. He coudn't tell her the truth. But lying he knew wouldn't work. 'i'm just looking out for her'
“It's okay. I'm sorry I was pushing it. It's just fun to see you upset.” Sumi said smiling.
Ryou was shocked.
“Excuse me!?” He was a little upset.
“It's just, when you get upset, your cheeks get all red. It's kinda cute.” Ryou looked at her, stunned. “What?” Sumi asked. “We're friends right? We shouldn't hide anything.”
“Ya, we're friends but . . . uh.”
“Hey! Look!” Sumi shouted pointing at the highschool. “That's it, right?”
“Uh. Yeah.” Ryou said, still in a little dazed.
Sumi smiled as they neared the building. Lots of students were outside, and she saw a few inside.
The two walked down the halls together.
Ryou was explaining were everything was and Sumi was trying to soak it all in. They neared the office and Ryou stopped.
“Students with out permision aren't supposed to go to the office.” Ryou looked at her sadly. “So, uh . . .”
“No, it's fine. Go ahead, I can manage on my own.” Sumi said smiling at him.
He nodded and turned. Ryou started heading down the hall, he needed to see his friends. If I don't, thet'll go looking for me. And I don't want Sumi to see them.
Ryou knew he was on of the most popular guys at school. He had popular, good-looking friends who wanted him to be something he wasn't. He was afriad that Sumi would get sucked into the same situation. Ryou was also scared that his friends might try to do to Sumi what they did to all girls.
'Sumi's better than all those girls, she didn't deserve that. She has been through enough already.' he thought.
~~~~
Sumi walked through the doors of the office.
It was a large room and everything was white. White desk, white walls, white everything.
She looked over at an elderly woman at the desk. Sumi slowly walked toward her.
“Um . . . excuse me.” Sumi said. The woman turned away from her white computer and looked at Sumi. “Uh, I'm a new student here. I uh, need my classes, please.”
“Oh of course,” the woman got up and looked in a large fileing cabinet. “What's your name, sweatie?”
“Oh. Sohma, Sumi Sohma.” She watched as the woman looked through all the files, until sinally, she pulled un a sheet of paper. “Here you are.”
“Thank you.” She said.
“You wouldn't be related to another Sohma who goes here, would you?” The old woman looked at her thoughtfully.
“Oh, uh. You could say were cousins.” Sumi was getting nervous, Kenji didn't tell her what to say if this happened.
Ryou and were kind-of cousins now, she thought. No where not, she thought sadly. 'At least . . . it doesn't feel like it.'
“Well, have a good fist day.” The woman said sweatly.
Sumi smiled and nodded. She went out the door and glanced at her classes.
The paper wasfresh out of the printer and it had kind of a glow to it. She had math first, on the third floor.
She started to head in that direction.
~~~~
On the third floor, two boys were talking in hused voices.
They were inside the math room, and were currently drawing crude remarks on the black board.
They were snickering as they drew, thinking about how they were comick geniuses.
In the darkend room, they heard footsteps echo through the walls. They quieckly ducked behind the door. The footsteps grew louder and the boys began to sweat.
“Bin, go see if it's a teacher.” whispered one boy. His sharp green eyes peirced through the other boys face.
“No way. I'm not the crazy one, Youki! You go check.” said the slightlyless ofensive looking boy. His hair was a soft brown and his eyes a deep redwood.
“Don't be stupid, just look!” the one boy, Youki, demanded.
Bin sighed and slowly lifted his head.
He looked out and saw a girl with bright orange hair. He had never sen that color hair before.
He bet himself anything it was died.
Bin just stared for a while, She must be new. I've never seen her before.
“Who is it?” Youki asked.
“Some girl.” Bin said thoughtfully. “I've never seen her before, though.”
“What?” Youki now tried to push himself up to look at her.
Youki put his hand on the handle and the door swung open, Bin and Youki falling out of it.
They both tumbled out, in plain view of the girl they were watching.
~~~~~
Sumi shrieked when she saw the two boys fall out of te classroom. One with light black hair, and one with brown.
They hastily got up. Both blushing, and for a moment, they all just stared at eachother.
Sumi scratched the back of her head nervously. She deseratly wanted to make a conversation.
“Uh. Well, it's good to know I'm not the only clumsy one here.” Was Sumi lame attempt at a joke. She barley found it in herself to fake laugh
“She's talking about you Bin,” Youki said.
The green eye'd boy shoved hos companion toward the girl.
“Me! You're the one who opened the door!”
“No need to point fingers now. We have a guest.” Youki was smug.
He was trying to intimidate her, and Sumi wasn't the least bit scared. Youkia signaled to Sumi, who was smiling broadly. She walked over to them and stuck out her hand.
“I'm Sumi Sohma, it's very nice to meet you.”
“Sohma. You mean like that snob?” Youki asked.
“What?” Sumi looked at him. Letting her hand drop.
“There is this other Sohma who goes here who's a total snob.” Bin said a little more gently, looking intently at her.
“You don't mean Ryou, do you?” They can't mean Ryou, he's so sweet.
“Is that his name? Ryou?” Youki said, looking unbelievebly bored.
Bin nodded.
“Ya, it sounds familiar. I've heard my sister talk about him.” Bin looked thoughful.
“Your sister?” Sumi asked.
“Ya my older sister's in love with him.” Bin sighed.
“So, what. You realated to him?” Youki asked.
“No. Not really. I mean uh . . . sure.” Not this again! She tried to change the subject. “Oh, so are you first years?” Sumi asked.
“Ya, whats it to ya?” Youki said defensivly.
“Nothing. I was just curious. You don't have to get all up tight!” Sumi looked at the two younger boys, were did they get off talking to her like that? I was just asking! “So what are your names?”
“Wouldn't you like to know.” Youki said.
“Yes I would!” Sumi shouted. She stepped closer to Youki, they were now eye to eye. Even though he was a first year, he was still taller than her. “I was hoping that we could be friends.”
Bin was amused. He didn't miss the way his friend blushed when she got close. He also saw him twitching his fingers, Youki's nervous.
Bin couldn't hold back a sneer.
“Ya, well . . . we can't be friends.” Youki said stepping away. “We're to different. I'm actually cool . . . an your a whannabee snob! Come on Bin.” And with that Youki walked down the hall, nose up.
Sumi sighed. She looked over at Bin.
He smiled.
“Well, I'm Bin. It's nice to meet you Sumi.” They shook hands and Sumi smiled with him. “Don't mind Youki, he's just a little uncomfortable when it comes to strangers.”
“Well I'm glad you're not.” Then they heard the bell ring. Students started piling into the halls.
“Bye,” Bin said, waving.
“Seeya.” Sumi whispered. She hoped that that wouldn't be the last time she saw Bin.
~~~~
Sumi somehow made it to her last period until lunch. It was Language Arts and Sumi was tired of school already.
All the students asked her annoying questions. Half the girls in school had already asked her to introduce then to Ryou, and Sumi was getting tired of telling them no.
She groggily went to Language Arts room. It looked just like the other rooms, blank and boring.
She sat down and again, the teacher made everyone look at her by telling them she was new today.
Sumi sighed. 'I'll barly make it till lunch.'
“All right. Today we need to get in our groups and discuss what we read in our books last night.” The teacher looked at Sumi. “Uh, Miss Sohma, you may pair with . . . ah, Takana and Yuiri.”
The teacher pinted to a pair of girls in the corner. Sumi sighed and walked over to them.
Sumi put on a fake smile. “Hi, I'm Sumi.”
She looked at the two girls. Them with a confused look she stared.
The two girls looked like complete opposites.
One had jet black hair with fake red highlights. She wore it in a messy bun with chobsticks. Her sleeves were rolled up to her sholders and she wore fishnet gloves. She wore a short skirt with long red and black stripped stokings. Army boots finished her punk aparel with flame shoe laces.
The other was the exact opposite. She had on the perfet uniform. Short sleeves, neat collar. Her short skirt was finished off with knee legnth socks and the knew stylish boots. The only starnge thing was her plum colored hair and almost bright purple eyes that shown brightly at her.
'It's Buffy and Hilary Duff . . .' Sumi thought sadly.
“ Oh wow! I't's great to finally meet you!” gushed the purple haired one . “I'm Yuiri! My little brother told me about you in the hall!”
“Huh?” Sumi said, surprised.
“Ya, He says he met you!” Yuiri said excidedly. “Didn't you meey a Bin this morning?”
“Oh, ya. So he's your younger brother?”
“Ya, we have a little sister too. But she's in middle school.”
“Oh . . . uh.” Yuiri sure is over wellming. I really don't care learnig about their little sister, that I didn't know she had two seconds ago.
“Stop shouting Yuiri. You pronably already scared her.” said the other girl, Takana, sneering.
“Oh, Takana! Don't be silly. Sumi isn't scared.” Yuiri looked at her. “Are you?”
“Well . . . uh.”
“See!” Yuiri said triumphantly to Takana.
Takana sighed. Sumi found herself laughing with the two girls and she finally made her first friends.
~~~~
Sumi happily dashed through the door. She sprang around the living room, not caring who stared. Kenji looked up from his studies and stared at the entergetic girl. Her bright eyes were closed withdelight as she jumped back and forth.
"Good first day?" he asked.
"Like you wouldn't believe," Sumi answered happily.
Kenji then looked around the room. "Were are Kaya and Ryou?"
Kenji's question was answered as the two Sohma's came in, sweaty and out of breath. Kaya collasped on the couch and Ryou sat down next to Kenji.
"Did you have to run so fast?" Ryou asked.
"I guess not . . . but Yuiri said she would call me when she got out of school, and I don't want ot miss her call." Sumi quickley rushed up the stairs.
"Who's Yuiri?!" shouted Kenji from downstairs.
"My new friend from school!" Sumi shouted down.
They saw her quickley rush down the stairs, clothed in her normal navy blue jacket that they first found her in. For Krnji, it brought back a smile.
She went and sat next to Kaya by the phone.
"So . . . you made some friends?" Kenji asked.
"Ya! They're in my Language Arts class. One's Yuiri and the others Takana! And gues what?" Sumi jabbered. "Takanna said i can even call her Anna! No one is allowed to call her that!"
"Well it sounds like you had a fun day . . . " Kenji said.
"Mhm," Sumi nodded. "And we got to eat lunch with Yuiri's younger brother and his friend. There first years, but her brother, Bin, is really mature. Can't say the same for his friend though."
The phone was rining and Sumi eagerly picked up.
"Hello?!" she asked, exicited. An unfaniliar voice was on the other line. It was deep and cold, scary even.
"Is there a Kenji Sohma there?" asked the voice.
"Uh yes . . ." Sumi said. She looked over at Kenji and extended te phone to him. "It's for you."
Kenji looked at the phone surprised. 'Who on earth . . .?'
"Hello . . .?" Kenji asked into the phone.
Sumi heared a frantic muffled voice. It sounded scared. Sumi watched as Kenji's eyes got bigger.
"Where?" he asked.
Kenji started to stand and he motionedfor Ryou to do the same.
Muffled voice.
"Uh hu," Kenji nodded.
A muffled voice and a few loud voices in the back round.
"Alright, try to calm her down . . ."
Voices.
"Yes. I'm bringing Ryou." Kenji said, heading for the door. "We'll be there in a minute."
Kenji hung-up and looked at Sumi.
He sighed. "Sumi, Ryou and I need to go. Watch Kaya . . . we might be gone for a while."
Kenji hurried out the door. Ryou followed him out, only looking back once at Sumi's confused face.
Kaya sighed. "Don't worry. This happens allot."
"What happens?"
"Nothing. . . " Kaya slowly got up. "I'll be upstairs."
Sumi stared at Kaya's retreating back. The more she got to know the Sohma's, the more they confused her. Sumi slowly shifted her eye's to out the window.
Above all the houses, was the Sohma main house. Standing in pride at the top off the sky. Sumi wondered again about the Sohma's. Everone was keeping things from her! How did they expect her to be a part of this family, if they never told her any thing?
Sumi then made up her mind. She got off the couch andheaded out the door. If Ryou wouldn't tell her, if Kenji wouldn't tell her, even if Kaya wouldn't, Tadashi would.
Tadashi understod her . . . he would tell her everything.
