Kyo awoke in the sunlight and stretched from his fingertips to his toes. He rolled over, glancing at his clock. Just after 8:00, `I'm up kinda late.' He thought. He yawned loudly and trundled down the stairs for breakfast.
“Morning, Kyo!” Tohru chirped brightly. “Did you sleep well?”
Kyo nodded, lying, and flopped down on the floor. His thoughts drifted to his restless sleep. `Bad dreams,' he thought, `must have been.' He struggled to grasp any remaining pieces, but they seemed to have gone with the night.
Yuki came in from outside, carrying a basket of veggies from he and Tohru's “secret base.” Kyo's stomach turned. How gross. Yuki breezed past Kyo without taking the slightest notice of the ill-tempered kitty.
Tohru peeked up as the door rattled. She gasped. “Yuki! I didn't know you had gone. How long have you been out?”
Yuki shrugged, smiling brightly at the rice-ball. “I couldn't sleep, so I decided to finish up my gardening before it got too hot.” He handed Tohru the basket. “Would you like me to help you clean them?” He asked, following her into the kitchen with his hand delicately placed on the small of her back. The sounds of water flowing from the kitchen sink drowned their jovial chatter.
Kyo glared at the door. “Stupid Rat,” he muttered.
The two reemerged with breakfast. Shigure immediately stuck his nose through the door. “Is it breakfast time already?” He asked. “I really should be getting to bed sooner.” He danced across the room and took a seat at the table. Kyo glared at him. “Oh, did someone wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning?” Shigure poked.
“No,” Kyo snapped. “What does that even mean, idiot.”
Shigure ignored the cat. “You're up early, Yuki! Could you not sleep again?” He asked.
Yuki shrugged. “Maybe I'm just becoming a morning person.”
“But you were up late last night too, right. Wasn't that you prowling around the kitchen at about two?” Shigure asked.
Yuki nodded. “I was thirsty, that's all.” He gave Shigure a mean glance, but smiled sweetly at Tohru. “I'm fine, really. What were you doing up at two?” He asked as an afterthought.
Kyo watched as Tohru nervously poked at her breakfast. “Yuki, I'm getting worried,” She started, “ever since…”
“I'm fine.” Yuki interrupted, still maintaining that smile.
“I mean did something happen?” She asked.
Yuki shook his head, cupped her cheek, and stared hypnotically into her eyes. “I'll be fine.” He urged.
Tohru nodded, dazed.
Kyo growled. `I hate that damn rat.' He thought. “Ever since what?!?” He snapped. No one replied. “Ever since WHAT?!?”
“Nothing, I already said that.” Yuki muttered without looking up.
“What is it girly man? Did batting your eyelashes fail you? Someone break your heart?” He taunted.
Yuki sighed. “Breakfast is wonderful Miss Honda, but I think I'll get started on my homework.”
“But Yuki…” Tohru began.
“Oh no you don't!” Kyo yelled, jumping up from the table. “It's time to fight.”
Yuki walked past Kyo like he was simply a piece of furniture. Kyo stared dumbfounded as he padded up the stairs. “AHH!” Kyo roared, punching his fist into his hand. “What's up with that guy lately?” Yuki had been retreating from him for almost four months. `First he wouldn't fight, then he wouldn't speak, now he won't even look at me.' Soon, Kyo realized, he wouldn't even appear in Yuki consciousness. “Stupid Rat!”
Kyo looked around. Tohru was once again pushing her food around on her plate. Not even Shigure would meet his gaze. “What? What aren't you guys telling me?”
Shigure shrugged. “Nothing, Kyo. I think we're just a little worried about him, too.”
“I'M NOT WORRIED ABOUT HIM!” Kyo roared, chucking his chopsticks across the room. “I'm going to train!” He snapped as he thundered out the door. He slammed it behind him with a loud clap.
`Why are they so worried about him?' He thought angrily, punching the wind. `What could he possibly have to be upset about?' “HA!” KICK! `He is so irritating!' “HIE! HIE! HA!” PUNCH! PUNCH! KICK! He imagined Yuki in front of him receiving the brunt of all of those blows. Kyo smiled and punched harder. “HIE!” The illusion before him ducked. “DAMNIT!” He screamed, `I can't even hit him in my imagination!'
Frustrated, Kyo flopped to the ground. He noticed a dark shadow gracing Yuki's bedroom window. “WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU LOOKING AT RAT BOY!?!” He screamed. The shadow was gone. Had it ever even been there? `Man, I'm cracking up!' Kyo stared blankly at the grass absorbing the day's events. `Yuki, Yuki, Yuki! That's all anyone ever thinks about! What's he do that's so great?' A thousand images of Yuki descended upon Kyo. It was Yuki helping this person, or organizing that event. Even since they were kids, Yuki was always… so on top of things. “Everyone looks up to him, and he doesn't even try.” He said softly, remembering his conversation with Tohru. Then there was Tohru; he was certain Yuki could charm Kyo right out of her memory. He saw this morning, Yuki's hand on Tohru's back. “Why can't I be more like him?” `He gets everything he wants, because… because he's better than me.' Kyo could feel his throat tightening. `If I were Tohru, I'd probably choose Yuki too. Who could possibly want me?'
It was sudden, like a cool breath of wind in the summertime. It was Yuki smiling at Kyo, almost as if to say, “I do.” Kyo, surprised, shook his head, and like a cool summer breeze the vision was gone, swallowed by the oppressive humidity of reality. Yuki had never, and I mean NEVER, smiled at Kyo, much less with such conviction. “I really am cracking up!” Kyo hopped up, and drowned his confusion in his punching bag. `I'll wipe that smile off your face, RAT BOY!”
