Fruits Basket Fan Fiction ❯ Try To Remember ❯ Broken Hearts Aren't Forgotten ( Chapter 1 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

I don't own Fruits Basket! Unfortunately (For me) I am not Takaya Natsuki-sensei.

Summery: The Sohmas had always feared that the curse and all of them would be erased from Tohru's memory. Now Tohru lost her memory, but not in the way they expected. When Tohru fell off of a cliff she not only forgot the Sohmas but she forgot her friends, her mother, her whole life. Three years have passed and her friends have helped her regain almost all of her memory, except for a few details they chose to leave out: The curse and a certain someone who ran away.

SPOILER WARNING: If you haven't read the whole manga there will probably be spoilers, but some big spoilers that I'm sure about are from chapters 98, 115, 121, 133.

Try To Remember

Chapter one

Tohru woke abruptly at the sound of the door bell, at first she was surprised. She was so dazed and disoriented that she wasn't sure exactly what was going on. But after a few moments, she got up and went to the door.

“Who could that be?” Tohru asked herself.

Tohru was so tried when she got home last night that she forgot to change into her pajamas. So she just tried to smooth out her clothes a little before she opened the door.

“Uo-chan!” said Tohru, opening the door. ”It's nice to see you, I'm sorry I don't have any kind of snacks prepared. I wasn't expecting to see you today.”

Arisa gave Tohru a puzzled look and then began to speak.

“Uh, you feelin' alright, Tohru?” Arisa asked.

“H-Hai! I'm okay! Why do you ask?” said Tohru.

“Well, you invited me to come over today.” said Arisa.

“Today...?” said Tohru.

“Yeah, you also invited Hanajima and the prince, remember?”

“A-ah! G-gomen nasai, I forgot what day it was.”

Arisa opened her mouth to say something but then stopped as she examined Tohru's face.

“Tohru, have you been crying?” Arisa asked.

“Crying?” said Tohru.

“You've got tears on your face, what's wrong?”

Tohru felt her cheeks, and Arisa was correct there were fresh tears on her face. But she couldn't remember having cried recently.

Why are there tears here? Tohru thought, Ah! I just remembered, I had that strange dream last night. I felt so sad, I must have been crying in my sleep! But Uo-chan thinks that there really is something wrong!

“Eh! Eh!? N-no, I wasn't crying! I-I mean, yes I was but I'm really okay! I-I just woke up a little while ago, a-and I had a bad dream so I had tears on my cheeks, but I'm okay! I really-”

“Wait a minute,” Arisa interrupted, “You just woke up? I figured you would have just gotten home from work, did you get the day off?”

“U-Um, yesterday…I got…fired.” Tohru said sheepishly.

“What!?!” Arisa exclaimed, “Why the heck did you get fired!? You're the best nanny ever! That woman is so ungrateful, I always knew she was jealous of your relationship with her daughter! I've got have a mind to go down there and knock some sense into her-“

“Ah! Please don't Uo-chan! It's really my fault!” said Tohru.

“Huh? Whada ya mean by that?” Arisa asked.

“Well, I was filling the bath tub, and I was really tired so I sat down for a bit, but I accidentally dozed off. So when I woke up, the bath had over flowed all over the floor.”

“That's it? Something like that can be cleaned up easily, is that any reason to fire someone?” Arisa asked.

“Um, a lot of water spilled.” Said Tohru, “And when I woke up, I panicked so much that when I was going down stairs I tripped and broke their grandmother's urn. So I'm sorry I made you worry, but it really is my fault. B-But, I promise to work harder at my next job!”

The door bell rang again, letting Tohru know that another guest had arrived. Tohru quickly wiped the tears off her face before running for the door.

“Hello Tohru-kun.” Said Saki.

“Hi Honda-san.” Said Yuki.

“Hi Hana-chan, Yuki-kun! Come in!” Tohru said cheerfully.

Tohru and her three friends sat down, and it wasn't long before Saki sensed that something was wrong.

“Tohru-kun,” said Saki, “Your electric waves feel very…sad…today. Tell me, what's bothering you?”

“Ah! I'm really okay! You don't need to worry!” Tohru said in a panic, she had already worried Arisa, she didn't want anyone else to worry needlessly on her behalf.

“She lost her job yesterday.” Said Arisa.

“Oh dear…Hmm, Tohru-kun's former employer was never very kind. Perhaps I should…teach her a lesson?”

“No, Hanajima. Tohru already made it clear she doesn't want us to hurt anyone. Too bad, I'd love to punch that woman right in the face.” said Arisa.

“Uotani-san” said Yuki, “You do realize your not in high school anymore, that kind of thing could get you arrested.”

“But, electric poison waves don't leave physical evidence…” Saki interjected.

“Oh yeah, Tohru, you also mentioned that you had a bad dream and that's why you were crying.” Said Arisa.

“Tohru-kun, what happened in this dream? What made you cry?” Saki inquired.

“I-It's silly, I'm really okay! I've been having weird dreams a lot lately so I'm usued to it! And I barley remember anything from the dream anyway, it's not important.” Said Tohru.

“Well then tell us what you remember.” Saki persuaded.

“If it's bothering you it's important to us Honda-san.” Said Yuki.

“Yeah, come on Tohru, tell us.” Said Arisa.

“Uh, okay.” said Tohru. “Well, all I remember is there was this a young man probably about high school age. He had orange hair and red eyes, and he said something like `Your love is an illusion', but I can't remember anything else. I don't know why, but it made me really sad when he said that…I didn't recognize him, but something about him was really familiar…”

Tohru had spaced out a little while she was talking but when she snapped out of it she saw that Yuki and Arisa had worried looks in their eyes. Even Saki, who usually remained expressionless, was looking slightly anxious.

“Ah! But I'm not sad anymore! You don't need to worry! I was just being stupid is all, please don't worry!” Tohru said frantically. “Gomen nasai, you're all such wonderful friends and all I ever do is make you worry. I feel like I'm such a useless idiot.”

“What are you talking about!?” Arisa said angrily, “Don't be stupid! You could never be useless! ne?”

Before anyone else could agree the tea pot started whistling loudly in the kitchen and Tohru jumped up to get it.

“Ah! There's the tea! I'll be right back!” said Tohru.

Once Tohru exited the room her three friends began to talk quietly amongst themselves.

“You realize what this means, ne?” said Yuki.

“Yeah, she's starting to remember Kyon-Kyon.” said Arisa

“If she does remember Kyo-kun,” said Saki “What shall we do? He is no longer here, even my dear Kazuma-san hardly ever hears from him.”

“Well, first of all, do ya think she's still in love with him?” Arisa asked.

“We may never know.” Said Yuki.

“But, if Tohru-kun is still in love with him and he does not love her back it would be a great tragedy indeed.” Said Saki.

“Yeah, I don't know if Tohru's poor little heart can take another rejection from that creep.” Said Arisa.

“I think all we can do is hope that she doesn't remember him,” said Yuki “Because even though the idiot isn't here anymore, it's clear that he can still make Honda-san cry.”

Everyone in the room was silent for a moment, they didn't know what they would do. They knew that Kyo was the one who could make Tohru happiest, but he could also cause her so much pain. And none of them wanted to see Tohru go through that again.

“We all know what he did to her before,” Arisa said as she stood up and put a fist in the air, “We'll all promise that if that jerk ever shows up again, we'll beat him to death!”

“Agreed.” Said Saki.

“Good idea.” Said Yuki.

“The tea is ready!” Tohru said happily as she entered the room and served the tea.

After the tea was served and ever one was seated at the table Arisa spoke, “So Tohru, are you alright now?”

“Hai! I'm really feeling much better now, I'm so grateful to have friends like you.” Tohru said warmly.

She looks so happy, Arisa thought with a smile, And that's the way it should be, I'm sure now that it's best for her to just forget all about Kyon-Kyon. I'll make sure he dies before he hurts her again.

Authors note!

That's the end of the first chapter! Yay! I can't believe I actually got it done! This fanfic has had like seven different versions of the first chapter but I never liked it so I kept restarting. I hope you enjoyed it, I know, it's still not that great but I had fun writing it. Poor Kyon-chan, everyone's out to get him. But I know when I read chapter 121 I was kinda mad at him myself! How could he say that to poor little Tohru-kun? So if you liked it, please review! And if you hated it, tell me how you think I can improve! Ja ne! ^_^
