Edward Elric is afraid of his nephew.
He loves him, but he fears him. Or perhaps it might be more accurate to say, he fears for him.
Johannes Elric is a beautiful boy. He's clever, laughs easily, is kind to animals, and is generally a big ball of mischief wrapped up in a cute 12-year-old body. He can puppy-dog-eye like nobody's business. He's got his father wrapped firmly around one finger, and his uncle around another.
(He has more trouble with his mother though. Winry's used to charming Elrics, and their tricks haven't worked on her for years.)
He's also going to be a talented Alchemist when he grows up. Al's already shown him some basic arrays, and is talking about sending him to Izumi in a few more years for proper training. He doesn't feel it's right that he teach his own son.
“He needs a proper teacher. If not Izumi, maybe some of our friends in Central might be interested in taking him on, what do you think brother?"
Ed thinks Izumi is a good idea. Hell, he'd even endorse Armstrong as a possible teacher. He'd agree to almost anyone as long as Al never vocalises the quiet plea he sometimes sees in his eyes.
Why don't you teach him, brother? Then I wouldn't have to send my son away, and you could stay around for a while.
Ed loves Johannes. He'd cut off his other arm for him. But he won't teach him. Because Johannes loves his famous Uncle Edward too.
"You're so cool Uncle Ed!" Johannes squeals when Ed visits, and finds that the stories of his latest exploits have beaten him home yet again. And Ed smiles nervously, and insists that it's no big deal, and that it wasn't like the stories say. That it was worse, and if he'd been smarter or faster maybe he could have saved more people.
Johannes never listens though, and Ed is hard-pressed not to shudder with fear when his little nephew throws his arms around him and announces, "When I grow up, I want to be just like YOU!"
And that is why Edward Elric is afraid of his nephew.
End.
