Behave

Women. There is something about women. I can remember, when I was a boy, being fascinated by the little things about them. Distinctions. Small bodies, soft skin, high voices. Women. Even hidden under military bulk and heavy armament, they are still so soft.

I like that.

“When are you coming to bed, Roy?”

“Soon.”

I shouldn't have taken Havoc's cigarettes, again. Riza hates it when I do that. It invariably means I will give him a lighter pack.

“I know what you're doing.”

“Then tell me to stop.” I take another drag, blow it through a crack in the window, and wait for her to do just that. And she doesn't. She never does. She never says no. “Riza?”

“Hm?”

“Tell me to stop.”

“Fuck off.”

She's funny that way.

“What are you laughing at?” I can hear the mattress springs creak; she's sitting up. There's the lamp. Good thing she turned it on. I tripped over her boots on the way to the window. Even though the moon's bright, out.

“I didn't know I was laughing.” I stub out Havoc's habit.

“Can you open the window?” She looks good in my shirt. Makes it worth my while to crank my neck and look over my shoulder. Of course I'd never tell her that. “You make it unbearable in here. All that damn smoke makes me sick.” I'd never say, because I like how cute she looks when she's pissed.

“Do it yourself.” I reach for the lamp and turn it off. She shoves me away. Just the way I like it.

“If you don't start behaving, I'm kicking you out of bed.”

“My bed? In my apartment?” I straddle her, loving the way the moonlight turns her into an angel. And she is, underneath that frown. I think that's why I love her. So many contradictions.

Of course I would never tell her this.

“You need to behave.” She tries to look stern as I bend over her.

“Are you going to make me?” I smile over her mouth.

“What if I am?”

“When?”

“Not…now…”

Women.
