Epilogue: All is one and one is all
The gleeful sound of laughter filled the midmorning air as a small boat rowed away from the mainland. The pleasant sound of splashing water stirring the current was from two boys playfully sticking their hands over the side of the vessel.
One was a blonde, seemingly the older of the two, but by height alone one would never guess. His blonde hair covered amber eyes that bordered gold and shone with anticipation.
The boy beside him the younger of the two although bigger, had sandy brown hair and charming brown eyes.
“This is great, brother!” He exclaimed, facing his smirking sibling with a grin.
“Yeah it's been a while since we've been on a vacation!” The blonde replied eagerly his amber eyes shimmering with glee.
“A vacation?” The evil sneer directed to them from one of the passengers immediately sent a wave of impending doom to the youngsters who shrank back warily.
The man rowing the boat burst into a fit of laughter, knowing all too well what was in store for the two boys.
The passenger was their teacher, Izumi. Izumi was a beautiful, sensually evil woman who always seemed to have something up her sleeve usually something violent.
They hit the shore of an Island and the two boys stared in wide-eyed wonder at the wilderness set before them.
“Here. Take this.”
They turned in time to catch a leather bound object and to their great surprise it was a knife.
“This is an uninhabited island; there are no wells, no electricity. As for wild animals, hm, there probably aren't any.” Their teacher explained as they stared bemusing up at her.
“You're to survive here on your own for one month, and NO alchemy.”
The last part of her brief explanation seemed to make the most impact on them.
“WHAT!!!!” They screamed in unison.
“All is one and one is all. And if you can't tell me what that means by the end of the month I'm sending you back to Resimbool!”
She waved merrily as if this was a mother leaving her children at grandma's house as they stared in shock at the fleeting figure of the boat. She may have believed she had left them alone on the shore but in truth something lurked within the woods watching.
“All is one and one is all? What does that mean?” The younger, sandy haired boy asked as he flopped down on the bed of leaves they had gathered.
“Doesn't make sense to me…” Grumbled the blonde.
“But if we don't figure it out by the end of the month she won't teach us!” he groaned
The blonde was immediately up in a rage. “WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH ALCHEMY? THIS IS JUST SOME PLOY TO GET RID OF US BY THAT CRAZY SADISTIC WITCH!”
A loud roar from his stomach quickly silenced his rants as he flopped back down.
“Let's sleep,” he spoke groggily. “We'll have to wake up early tomorrow to find something to eat.”
They didn't know they would be waking sooner than they thought.
The chill of the night brought forth the silence of the forest and all seemed at peace for the time. The blonde tossed feeling something shift and wearily opening his eyes.
“What's the matter Al? Need a restroom?” he asked half drunken with sleep.
But instead of seeing his younger brother he found himself staring wide-eyed at a monstrous man wielding a club. He wore a ghoulish mask and the moonlight defined every sinewy muscle as he raised the club over his head and began bringing it down.
The blonde hastily grabbed his slumbering sibling by the collar of his shirt and dragged him temporarily out of range.
“What is it Ed? Go to the bathroom by yourself.” Al grumbled in his semi- conscious state.
“Not that you idiot, wake up!” his brother protested in a meek voice as he watched the man stalking towards them.
Reluctantly opening his eyes Al became very much awake when the club descended to smash them to the ground and managed to move at the last second. But his slow reaction gave the brute an opportunity which it made use of by kicking the small boy in the side with its bare foot.
Ed growled from his position on the ground having been thrown by the sheer force.
“Get outta here!” The voice of the man came in a beastly snarl. Al had managed to prop himself up on his elbow trying to regain his breath.
“We can't if we do we'll never learn Alchemy!” The blonde yelled. The reply only seemed to infuriate the man further into his fits of rage and he stalked towards Al.
Fearing for his younger brother's life he stumbled to his feet and dashed forward, leaping, and landed a punch in his jaw. However their masked assailant was completely unfazed by the retaliation and effortlessly flung the boy off and to the ground to resume walking towards the younger one.
Ed hit the ground and rolled, crawling to all fours and staring hopelessly at them. “Damn it! Al! Run!”
Al nodded hesitantly but got to his feet and took off in one direction and watched his brother go in another.
The masked brute looked either way for a moment he appeared to be contemplating who he wanted to capture first. Instead he left in another direction and was gone with the night. But again something lingered at the scene.
“You better not be lost Al or I'll kill you myself...” Ed murmured shaking with terror from the unexpected attack.
But when he heard something behind him shift and something grab his arm tightly his terror became absolute panic.
“Please don't eat me! I taste terrible!” he babbled.
“Calm down Ed! It's me!” The relief that he want about to be in a pot of boiling water was clear as Ed turned around on the verge of tears.
“Oh Al I was so scared I thought you were lost—“He whimpered but was immediately silenced.
The thumping, deliberate footfalls of the giant were easily distinguishable from the other night sounds as he stalked into the clearing. His loud breathing coming in grunts as he trudged along trying to locate his earlier prey.
The brothers sat behind a tree each trembling and covering the others mouth to ensure neither would give them away.
By morning they were visibly shaken and tires from the ordeal. “Teacher said there were no wild animals on this Island.” Al protested as they roamed for food.
“I think that thing was worse than any wild animal.” Ed walked rigidly behind his younger brother. He stopped however and gulped as the hair on the back of his neck stood on end, prickling to attention.
He had the horrible feeling they were being watched…And followed…
