Author Message: This is my first fan fic, so please excuse it's crappy-ness.
Disclaimer: I don't own Full Metal Alchemist in any way, shape, or form. Technically, none of the characters are here yet, but I like disclaimers. I created the characters and places in this chapter. I apologize if anyone resembles you and you find such offensive.
She stifled a yawn, slumping back against her chair. Last period, last day of 9th grade. The teacher, a severe looking woman in her forties, was blabbering on about summer school, the majority of her class staring intently at the clock. Kiara toyed with the ends of her choppy black hair, the streaks of vibrant blue vivid against the fluorescent lights, her blue-violet eyes staring at her wrists, as if she was contemplating slitting them out of sheer boredom. Finally, the bell chirped in a long dinnnnng, send the class rocketing out of their seats, cheering and chattering loudly. Kiara was out the door as quick as possible, dancing a delirious circle as soon as she was through the doors.
“Freedom!!!” she yelled to the sky, a cloudless pure blue on the California summer day. Her best friend, a girl of average height with a cascade of dark brunette hair and pure green eyes, nearly knocked Kiara to the ground when she hugged the shorter girl.
“Can't. Breathe. Mallory!” Kiara managed to choke out, the other's fierce hug, unfortunately around her neck, cutting off her oxygen.
“Eep! Sorry, KK! I can't help it. It's summer vacation!” Mallory exclaimed, releasing her friend. Kiara grinned, knowing that during summer Mallory still practiced with her synchronized swimming team almost every day of the week, rather than giving herself a break from the yearlong sport. They both walked down the steps of Silver Leaf High school, heading in opposite directions with promises to call each other, as well as email, text, write, and visit. They both lead busy lives, Mallory most of all.
Kiara opened the front door, with the ritual cry to the house empty of other people, `I'm home!'. A pure black cat gracefully dashed down the flight of stairs, twining around her ankles, followed by a slightly overweight part-wolf husky. The dog knew better than to leap on top of the girl, knowing she would topple if he did, instead beating his tail in a relentless rhythm. She stroked the affectionate animals, the cat, Ember, acting haughty before purring, and the dog, Cain, openly demanding of her attention.
She managed to disentangle herself from the animals, slinging her backpack to the ground in the entryway. She trotted out to the front yard, the bright green grass still wet from the sprinklers, a few of the younger children of the neighbors' running around, screams echoing in the air. She waved vaguely in the direction of Seledrine, a gangly, athletic boy a little older than her, his hair a light brown with natural blond streaks, who returned the gesture with a smile. She tugged open her mailbox, pulling out the letters, bills, and advertisements that had been delivered.
She studied the mail on her way back to the door, recognizing a bill from the electric company, a magazine of her mother's, and advertisement, and a letter from her aunt. However, there was also a thick envelope of pale cream, the return adress stating Serpent Academy. `I've never heard of Serpent Academy,' she thought to herself, opening the envelope without tearing it, a feat that generally evaded her. Inside, she found a typed letter, her name at the top, an insignia of a design she recognized as a hexagram with a serpent tailed lion inside at the bottom.
She scanned it, her eyes widening. It read in that uniform type:

President Bradley
Kiara tucked the letter and the rest of the mail under her arm, and returned inside, honored and intrigued. Something was compelling about that offer, the fact that someone thought she was special. She had fallen in love with the school with it's classes on so many strange topics, from `Breaking in to Bollywood', to `Creating Miniatures', all the way to normal classes, and it's beautiful grounds, resembling a sprawling Victorian mansion. She would attend Serpent Academy.
