Edward woke to see that he had been moved to a hospital like setting.
The crisp white sheets and sterile white walls gave him a feeling of dread and made him shiver slightly.
He glanced around for any familiar faces and was calmed to find a small ball of gray fur curled upon his chest.
“Alphonse.” he breathed in relief, the kitten opened it’s eyes and released a grateful mew.
“Brother, you’re awake!”
Ed managed a smirk and nodded “Yeah, but how’d I get here?”
The cat shifted a bit and said “The Colonel carried you in when you went unconscious.”
Edward managed a slight grimace and sighed “Ugh, of course it had to be him. Now he’s going to act like I owe him something for passing out in his presence.”
Al shook his head, tiny ears flickering as he took in the sound of footsteps approaching.
“Don’t worry about him brother, you need to get well.”
The door opened and a doctor entered. “I see you’re finally awake. We’re running some tests to see what’s causing your pain. It seems to be some sort of toxin in your system, the lab is analyzing it.”
The doctor noticed Alphonse watching him from his position on Ed’s chest.
“That’s a loyal cat you’ve got there, stayed with you the whole time we examined you.”
Ed nodded “Yeah, he’s like family to me.”
The doctor nodded at the odd comment and exited.
Al moved closer to Ed‘s face, resting his tiny body on Edward’s jutting collar bone as he narrowed his gray gaze.
“Toxin?” he mewed, sniffing Ed’s chin and throat as though it would lead to the revealing of the poison flowing beneath the surface.
Edward chuckled as Al’s whiskers tickled his flesh “Quit sniffing me Al, I’m trying to remember where we’ve been and how in the hell I could’ve been infected with some toxin.”
Ed closed his eyes as he reviewed the past days events, excluding the failed transmutation, he examined every shadowy figure on the trains and all the fake witch doctors that they’d encountered on the most recent mission to a small town called Hitor.
Any one of the witchy fakes that they’d seen could’ve infected him, he hadn’t exactly been nice to them, but they were in his way and just wouldn’t listen to him when he said he didn’t have time for their fake magic.
They kept sidling up to he and Al and forcing herb dolls and trinkets in their faces, Ed had lost his patience with one in particular and transmuted her stupid doll into a pile of dust.
He remembered the lady yelling all sorts of jibberish and tossing crap at them, but he didn’t pay her any mind.
The dust that she threw could’ve easily been some sort of toxin.
His eyes snapped open as Al’s rough sand paper tongue descended upon his throat, causing him to shiver from the abrasive touch and heat.
“Damn Al, what the hell are you doing?!”
Al didn’t respond for a while and continued in his ministrations, Ed struggled to sit up and the kitten slid down onto his lap.
Edward spoke to his brother again “Al, what were you doing?”
The cat ignored him completely and began licking his paw meticulously.
Grabbing the kitten beneath it’s arms he lifted him to eye level, seeing the odd dull concrete gray that his eyes were, Ed quickly repeated “Al?”
Finally Al responded, the haze clearing and revealing his customary bright gray blue glint as it slowly returned.
“Brother?” Al’s voice sounded tentative and frightened as it floated through Ed’s consciousness.
Edward hugged the kitten to his chest and felt Al’s soft paws attempt to embrace him in return.
“What just happened?” Ed asked looking down at the top of Al’s soft gray ears.
Al’s voice stuttered out, even his mew sounded disconnected. “I-I don’t know, Brother, I could hear you talking, but it’s like I couldn’t understand or reply, I fogged out.”
Ed watched him in silence for a few seconds.
“I-It scared me.” Al’s voice retained the small, and nervous tone that was slowly breaking Ed’s heart.
“It will be alright.” Ed said affirmably, even though he wasn’t actually sure of that fact and the way Al was clinging to his shirt and trembling made him all he more
uncertain.
