don’t own FMA and I never will. I think…. Probably
Mary woke up to find herself in Mustangs office lying on the couch. She sat up to see Mustang sitting behind his desk talking to three men. She turned her head to find Ed sitting on the couch opposite of her. Only Riza had noticed she had awoken and cleared her throat loud enough to get everyone to turn their heads and see that Mary had awoken. Havoc rushed at her with a cup of hot tea handing it to her then taking his place at the back of the room along with Fuery and Armstrong. Ed lifted his head and saw her causing him to smile slightly. The taller of the three men came forward and shook her hand introducing himself as the head of the investigations department.
“Mary are you up to answering some questions?” the man asked her the way you’d ask a four year old. That kind of pissed her off at the fact that he wasn’t taking note that she wasn't a toddler. Mary’s eye’s darted around the room looking at all the people then landing on a calendar and seeing that it was Sunday. Apparently she had been sleeping for a little over 24 hours. ’Damn’ she thought but was diverted from her thoughts when the man continued talking to her.
“So honey, can you answer a few questions?” the man asked again in a sickly sweet voice, still unaware he was talking to a young woman and not a little kid. Making her want to punch him in the mouth even more. She nodded shaking her fantasy of ripping his mustache off of his face and listened to his questions telling him everything that happened at the fair, not mentioning the kiss however as a precaution to stop Ed from getting into some trouble, she knew they’d take it the wrong way.
When the man had finished asking his questions he and his two comrades left the office. Mary was glad to see them finally go, and so were the others. There was silence in the room as Hawkeye sat next to Mary and rubbed her arms to bring up her body temperature and comforting her. Mary then saw her suitcases on the opposite side of the room and realized something.
“Isn’t my brother coming to get me?” Mary asked Roy who had been watching her fro his spot behind the desk. He diverted his gaze from the girl when she looked at him to some papers on his desk.
“He left about four hours ago so he should be here in an hour-hour and a half” he replied, as people began to chatter randomly about pretty much random things. This gave Ed the perfect chance to pull Mary from the rest of the crowd to the subordinates office space where it was dimly lit and the man light source was the lightning the cracked the sky every few seconds. Ed looked deep into her eyes trying to apologize for the events that had occurred at the fair. But Mary just laughed
“Ed no, I don’t want you to be sorry you didn’t know that was going to happen. If anything I should be sorry, knowing Mustang he probably didn’t stop yelling at you until Riza pulled her gun on him” Mary replied smiling at him jumping at the sudden clap of thunder in the sky, making Ed chuckle slightly. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a picture that was taken of them together when they were watching a sunset on top of the headquarters building. Tears began to well up in her eyes and she wrapped an arm around Ed’s shoulders and Ed hugged her back blushing when Mary kissed him on the cheek. But what they didn’t know was that Roy and Riza were watching them from behind Roy’s desk.
“Tell me. Why does Ari only refer to me as Mustang? I have never heard her use my first name.” Mustang asked Riza who had been secretly smiling at the sight of Mary and Ed together.
“Well Mustang is very formal and proper, she probably does it because she knows she has to leave tonight and she didn’t want to become attached, but Ed can relate to her in ways you cannot. That is why she can’t avoid connecting with him.” Riza said realizing how she had disappointed Roy with her answer knowing that he had become attached to her, and worried for her the same way any good father would. And Riza liked that Roy had a side like that and wished he’d show it more often. Mary being here has caused Roy to put off his playboy ways. She had not picked up one personal phone call for Roy all that week and rather liked the sound of a phone not ringing.
She watched Roy as he watched the two come back inside the office where they were more clearly visible. And was surprised when Roy jumped up and ran over to Mary who had fallen to her knees and was staring out the window with a spaced out expression on her face. Everyone had begun to surround Roy and Mary as Roy began to shake her trying to get her out of her trance. When Mary had finally snapped out of it her eyes widened with horror a she jumped up and began to talk trying to explain something but she was wasting her effort because none understood a word of her. Roy wasn’t letting go of her arms and she began to pull way from him pleading with him to let her go. But when he wouldn’t let her go she brought her foot up and made contact with his shin causing him to let go of her. She ran from the office and down the halls pursued by Roy and Riza who were followed closely by everyone else who had been in the office.
Mary bursted through the doors of the building running out of it and into the rain where she saw the vehicle approaching that her brother was in. She began to wave her arms frantically signaling for the car to stop, but she hadn’t been seen by her brother who kept on driving as Roy and Riza shortly followed by the others emerged through the open doors. Mary put her arms down and began looking around as though looking for something. When she didn’t see what she had been looking for she slowly walked down the steps as Roy and Riza made their way down them as well.
But out of nowhere something long black and sharp shot out and went through the cars exterior all the way through the wind shield causing the car to fly through the air. Mary threw her hands out, and everyone instantly had been thrown on their backs and the car instead of landing on its top landed on its side as though obeying her hands. When the car stopped Mary ran down the rest of the steps as everyone got up bewildered at what had just happened and returned to the scene before them. Mary began to breathe heavily beginning to cry as she walked closer to the vehicle choking on her silent sobs as she walked. Mustang watched as she ran the rest of the way to the car and threw the door open.
Mary stood there beholding the sight. Her brother was dead, he had a hole through his chest where his heart was and crimson blood was seeping out staining everything it touched. Ari brought her arms up and rested her hands on her neck as she feel to her knees allowing the others to see what she had just seen. She brought her head back and began to scream to the heavens in pure hatred and anger. She began to pull her brother out of the car with even more surprising strength than before. She pulled his body all the way out and had rested his head on her lap; she began to sob uncontrollably as she saw his blood covering her hands. She began to stroke his face quietly begging
“No, please don’t do this to me, not again. Please!” she yelled out as Roy began to walk towards Mary down the steps and across the few feet that separated them. She could feel him when he came up behind her as onlookers gathered some shedding tears at the horrible sight. She quietly pleaded.
“Please Kane come back. Please don’t leave me. I don’t want to be alone” she pleaded stroking his hair as his blood blossomed out from his chest hitting the ground and losing it’s color a little from mixing with the rain water on the ground. Roy kneeled behind her and put a hand on her shoulder. Mary whimpered slightly as though his touch brought pain to her. He felt her tense up under his fingers as he put both of his hands on her arms and slowly brought her up out of her position. She began to shake violently begging him to let her stay with her brother. But Roy kept on walking her back wars away from the body as people walked out with a stretcher and hauled his body onto it then took it inside. She began to yell his name sobbing uncontrollably. Tears began to fall from Roy’s eyes as she shook in his arms as he remembered the child from so long ago. After realizing that no one was listening to her, her body became limp. Roy brought an arm under her legs and hoisted her up carrying her up the steps and past the onlookers hoping the rain would mask his tears that fell as he looked down to see Mary holding onto his jacket burying her face into it, secretly hating himself for not knowing what was going on and not letting her go, that if he had not been so stubborn she could have stopped this. He carried her all the way up to his office where he laid her down on the couch, and attempted to remove her bloodstained jacket that had begun to match the ret of her clothes but his hands shook so badly. Riza saw this and placed her hand upon Roy’s in a silent offering and excused all the men from the room and began ordering the women to go retrieve things such as hot water, towels, blankets, and clean clothes from her suit case as the men waited outside in the subordinates’ office space. Armstrong and Havoc sitting in chairs and Fuery standing with some files close to his chest, Ed was perched atop of a desk and Roy was leaning against the wall next to the door. All of them except for Ed and Roy who knew about this wondering what had happened. And the others assuming that Roy and Ed also had no idea. Riza had cleaned and clothed Mary when she called for Roy to come inside. He walked in to see Mary sleeping with her head on Riza’s lap, and Riza stroking her forehead. He approached the couch and looked into Mary’s face; it had become pale and flushed at the cheeks from an approaching fever. Roy sat down on the couch opposite Riza and put his head in his hands and let out a long breath.
“Why did I do it?” Mustang asked quietly. Riza was aware of what he meant by that.
“Because it was your orders and as soldiers we take orders” Riza replied raising her head to look into Mustangs eyes. When his met with hers he understood, then something else came to mind that forced his head back into his hands.
“What’s going to happen to her?” he asked looking up hoping for an answer. Riza just sat there for a moment staring at the ground then lifted her head and looked at Mustang once again.
“Well CPS will find her a foster home. Or someone will adopt her. But when two years go by and no one calls her number she’ll be out on the streets. Unless someone will adopt her and take her in” Riza replied looking into his eyes trying to get another non verbal message across to him. When Mustang realized what she was really trying to say to him, his eyes widened and he looked down at Mary once again and realizing that he had to make a choice, but whichever one he made would change her entire life. Then he opened his mouth and spoke
“It can only get easier”
If only he knew how wrong he really was.
