The group sat in silence as the vehicle in which they sat rumbled down the road that cut through the desert. All the eight men and women were coated with a thick layer of sweat and their breaths came out in sharp pants. Among the people in the group sat a raven haired man whose eyes were cast down at the floor in thought. 'what have you been doing this whole time you've been here? Have you been locked up in a dungeon, beaten for military secrets, starved? Are you even alive?' he thought desperately hoping that the worst possible things that could happen to her could only occur in his imagination. Someone cleared their throat next to him and he looked up to see Hawkeye sitting next to him watching him out of the corners of her eyes. When they made eye contact she turned to him and stared him down for the longest moment.
"I hope so too", Riza claimed knowing all of the awful things that were on his mind. She along with everyone else had come to know Mary and cared about her with all their hearts, but seeing the affect she had on Roy was mind boggling, how someone could be so torn apart by the loss of someone so small and insignificant to the rest of the world.
"She is your world" she whispered. Everyone looked Riza with questioning eyes and she just smiled and scratched the back of her head.
"I'm just going over the plan in my head. No worries", she said no one heard what she had really said. When everyone went back to their preoccupation of cards or chugging from a water bottle she caught Mustang staring at her out of the corner of her eyes. She turned and looked at him and was overcome by the look of understanding that had flooded his features.
"Men", he began grabbing their attention "We're close to our target, lets go over it one more time"

When he opened his eyes, he was starring out the window at a blue sky dotted with tiny transparent clouds. He realized he was alone in the bed and turned over wondering where the other occupant had gone off to. He pulled the covers off of himself and got out of the bed leaving the room and heading towards the library. When he looked through the doorway he saw her, her hair was pulled back in a messy ponytail and she was sitting on top of one of the tables in the room with her legs crossed and her arms rested lightly on her legs.
When her approached her his senses were invaded with her smell, it was strong, but she smelled like a rain storm, she smelled clean. He wondered how she had achieved such a wonderful scent. He walked around her and saw that her eyes were closed and she was humming lightly, something foreign. He sat in one of the chairs facing her and cleared his throat. She opened one eye and looked at him up and down. She closed her eyes again then opened them both. She stared him down for a moment then he spoke.
"What were you doing there?" he asked scratching the back of his head.
"Thinking, that's what I'm doing" she replied stifling a yawn. Scar searched for something else to ask her. Words unspoken seem like burdens to him now.
"What were you thinking about?" he asked chancing that she wouldn't want to tell him what was on her mind. Mary just smiled her radiant grin and pushed a book towards him. He leaned forward to see a picture of what looked like a black and white stripped horse. It stood in yellow grass that was so tall you couldn't see the legs of the black and white horse.
"You're thinking about black and white horses?" Scar tried, knowing that his guess probably wasn't anywhere near what she was thinking about. Mary laughed and turned the page.
"No, I'm thinking about this place, where the zebra's, that's what they're called, and lions and elephants run wild and free. Where the people live one with nature, they understand this circle of life that people have talked about before. The land is beautiful, untouched by civilization" she answered turning the pages revealing pictures of lions, and elephants, more zebras, and blood red sunrises. Scar took all of this in and asked her.
"Any specific reason you're thinking about this place?" Mary's smile faded as Scar looked through the rest of the pages reading the captions.
"All my life I've dreamed of going places, different places, discovering things. I've never wanted to be someone special. I just want to know things. To feel the earth beneath my feet. To feel another worlds sun on my face. But, it looks like all my dreams are at an end." she said closing the book in Scars face, and sliding the book away from them across the table. Scar frowned at Mary who was still looking at the cover of the book.
"You know, in my religion there is this being called the dream giver, and he gives us dreams for reasons, he wants us to see certain things, wants us to hear things needed to be said."
"What's your point?" Mary asked gazing at Scar.
"Even though you are not Ishbalan, the dream giver still waits for you. He waits for everyone, you just need to know what he's telling you" Scar said, getting up out of his chair and crossing the room. Standing in the doorway he spoke back to Mary.
"I need to go speak to someone in town, someone who is trying to help me stop what these people are trying to do. You may not think these people can be stopped, but you have more people behind you than you think". With that he left the room and headed downstairs to leave the house. Mary still sat there gazing out the window 'Maybe my dreaming isn't over', she thought hopefully. She took a breath and grabbed her dark green sari off the back of the chair and slipped it over her head. She left the room and ran down the staircases, down the hallways, and out the front door. She ran up over the hill of sand and saw Scar walking down the opposite side of the hill. She yelled out to get his attention, he turned around and looked up at her, she ran down the hill and stopped at his side. She smiled up at him and he smiled at her. She was forced to shield her eyes as the winds picked up and sand blew everywhere. They pressed on towards the city at the bottom of the field, but the wind picked up and threatened to blow Mary away. Scar grabbed onto her wrist and pulled her along. They were about halfway down the slope when the ground tremored beneath their feet.
“What’s going on?” she yelled when they stopped. The ground was beginning to shake more violently and Mary was holding onto Scars’ shirt for support.
“I don’t know, the sand isn’t shifting it’s something else, he yelled over the howling winds. Suddenly the ground stopped shaking and it was as though nothing had happened. The wind still blew without mercy as though the land it ravaged had never moved. They stood there in silence and watched the landscape unmoving. Suddenly the sun disappeared as a black mammoth rose from the ground into the sky and fell forward about fifty yards from them. It looked like a block of black stone with a gun perched atop it. Men in uniforms with large guns ran around the machine down the side of the sand hills towards them.
“Mary run” Scar said, pushing Mary off of him towards the city. Mary stood there and shook her head vigorously.
“I will find you don’t worry”. Scar assured her. Mary turned and ran through the sand away from the sight. Once far enough away she turned and saw about twenty men jump on Scar and pin him to the ground.
“No! Stop!” she screamed, running towards them without thinking. More men began to run towards her, and over the wind she couldn’t hear someone yelling, ‘do not touch her’. The men merely stopped and watched as she ran past them. When she was a few feet from Scar strong arms enveloped her. She struggled against them ignoring the voice that was yelling her name. When she figured that she would not win against the arms binding her. She stopped struggling. She looked into the face of her restraint and saw a face she new.
“Mary it’s me” he spoke, his dark eyes searched her face for the girl he knew. She was there, but something was different, she was changed. He figured she was in shock and let her go, she fell to her knees and crawled to the man that lay pinned to the earth
“What’s going to happen?” she whispered to him. Worry filling her eyes. Scar smiled at her and whispered back,
“Go with them, don’t worry, this was bound to happen”
“What about all those people? Your friends that were going to stop these people?” she asked tearfully.
“We’ll be watching for you. We’re not giving up. Someone will be there for you when you need help” he assured her. They broke eye contact when she was pulled by the arms away from him and towards the car that waited for them. When she was in the car with the other soldiers she watched out the back while the soldiers got off of Scar and he retreated into the distance. For the rest of the ride through the desert she watched out the back of the window. After a day or so of travel the familiar white building hovered before her. It seemed more powerful now than ever before. Before she knew it she was back in the office that had begun this life she lived now. She could hear yelling outside of the room and shuffling of the feet. After a moment Roy Mustang barged through the doors and closed them behind him. He watched Mary with a relieved expression and walked over to her. He reached and closed her in a powerful embrace. When she did not return the gesture he stepped back from her and looked into her sad eyes.
“Were you hurt?”, he asked her. She shook her head and blinked slowly as though annoyed with his question.
“What happened?”, he asked her firmly. Mary sighed heavily.
“My heart was broken. I learned things, things I should have been told a long time ago” she replied. Mustangs’ expression had changed from one of concern to one of worry.
“We never told you for your own safety” he replied hoping she didn’t get the wrong idea about not having known all those things.
“Well you should have just left me where I belonged, unknowing and lonely.” she replied her voice faltering.
“What do you mean?” he asked confused as to her cold tone and emotionless expression, he was perplexed.
“I mean you shouldn’t have fooled your job into feeling something that wasn’t real.” she said, she turned on her heel and walked out the door slamming it behind her. Mustang stood where he was glued to the spot. He was horrified. ‘She thinks I’ve been lying to her the whole time. Something has made her think that all of the things said have been lies. Now she hates me, she knows the truth now.’ he thought horridly. He wanted to run after her, he wanted to make her believe that she did mean more to him than just as a job. But, he was stopped by Hawkeye who had come into the room. He looked to her with unbelieving eyes.
“You should have known this could happen. We should have known that learning these things about herself would break her heart.”
The group sat in silence as the vehicle in which they sat rumbled down the road that cut through the desert.
