The alarm sounded with that same monotonous “beep” that it did every morning. On any other morning he would have tried to break it, but not today. He didn't know if he didn't have the strength or he just didn't feel like it; all he knew was that he didn't. He was surprisingly conscious enough to turn the alarm off instead of pressing the snooze button just to hear it go off again in 9 minutes.
It seemed “out of the ordinary” for him to act like this when they'd been together the previous night. Normally, the other would come over to have a drink or two before they winded up somewhere like on the kitchen counter or the dining room table, but then the other would leave sometime after he fell asleep but before he woke up. And on any given occasion, he'd wake up wishing the other hadn't.
The fact is that today didn't feel like one of those “morning after” rituals he knew all too well. And it made him feel strange - he was way to accustom to that feeling. But when he was pulled back into bed and an arm snaked around his waist, the question “You care to be late?” never sounded so good.
