Alphonse dreamed of the gate.

 

It haunted his dreams. Night after night he appeared in front of the doors and listened to the clawing and gnashing of those on the other side.

 

He would wake up screaming, and desperately touch his face, expecting to feel cold metal but found himself brushing away hot tears.

 

Alphonse knew that as soon as he fell back asleep he would dream of the gate again. But Alphonse always went back to sleep because the gate was the closest thing to Edward. Even though it was scary, and even though it was sad, he always returned because Al felt safest when he was with Ed.
