“Are you sure about this?”
Al stared down into the hole in the ground at the milk bottle, small oval stone and pair of gloves before looking back up at Ed. “Of course” Ed replied shovelling the first load of dirt into the hole “I'm done with that part of my life, I'm a mechanic now not an alchemist and we both know it” Ed said as he continued to fill the hole with dirt. “Yeah, I guess” Al replied.
As Ed finished burying the objects he looked up at both Al and Mustang and leaned on the shovel's handle. “Not much of a grave stone is it? Not when you consider all the lives that are in there” Mustang said not looking up from the mound of freshly turned earth.
“Suppose not, but if we had put a grave stone here it'd be like placing a big X on it for any overly ambitious alchemists wouldn't it?” Ed looked down at the mound and sighed “it's better this way anyway, let the stone and my legend slip back into legend where it can't harm anyone else” he said.
“So where are you going to go now?” Ed asked Al. “Back to Lior, Armstrong said he has a position vacant in his personal staff so I won't be sent all over the state now” Al replied a small smile flickering at the corners of his lips. “Even though the place is basically a giant death trap just waiting to be set off by someone insane enough?” Ed asked. “I've died once already, and until the time comes for me to die for real…….. I'm going to live were my heart is” Al replied.
“Rose?” Ed asked. “Rose” Al replied with a nod. “Well, me and Winry will come and visit if we ever get the chance” Ed said holding out his hand. “Likewise” Al replied shaking Ed's hand. Their eyes meet and although neither said so they both knew that this was their last goodbye and neither would see the other again.
Ed took Al by surprise when he suddenly pulled him into a tight hug. “I love you brother” Ed whispered trying to fight back the tears. “You too big brother” Al replied returning the hug. After several minutes had passed Ed stepped back “you better go, or you'll miss the train” he said wiping his eyes clear of the tears.
Leaning on the shovel handle again Ed watched Al walk of across the field. As he reached the dirt road Al turned and waved, the wind tugging at his long coat and hair as the sun shone brightly. Ed rose his hand up and waved lazily a smile on his face as Al smiled back.
“Don't start crying again Fullmetal” Mustang said stepping in front of Ed and straightening his jacket. “Ha, for you? No chance Colonel” Ed replied. “I suppose I better go as well, they'll be wanting me in Central” Mustang said. “And after that?” Ed asked curiously. “Who knows” Mustang replied “I'm a soldier, I'll go where they send me” he said smiling slightly.
Mustang extended his hand “well, until another one of your old enemies returns take care Ed” Mustang said. “You too……. Roy” Ed said smiling. Mustang, like Al, reached the dirt road before turning back to face Ed “Oh and Ed?” he called out. “Yeah?” Ed replied.
“If you ever need a hand starting a barbeque just send us a message” Mustang said with a smile. “Will be Colonel, will do” Ed said throwing Mustang a lazy salute as he laughed good humouredly.
Once Mustang was gone from sight Ed turned back to the mound, the shovel now slung over his shoulder, and sighed. So much of his life was buried here, so much that had once been the very reason of his existence that it seemed like he couldn't just let it go.
But let it go he knew he would, after all as he had told Al he was no longer that person was he? As he caught sight of the blackened stump in the middle of the field he smiled. That was his past, the person he had once been and as he looked up towards his and Winry's home his smile broadened, “and this is me now” he whispered to himself heading off back to his waiting wife…………
FIN
A/U: It's over!? I'll be honest, the endings the only part of the story that I've really gotten into, the rest of it went through so many changes in storylines that I'm not really happy with it to be honest. It wasn't writing it then, so if anything I'm even happier to be where I am now because it proves I can write a story, no matter how short (and this feels short!) now matter how hard it is, or how long it takes! Anyway, if you've gotten this far thank you and I hope you liked it, later folks………..
