Chapter 5: Lonely Island, Talking ever help?
Ed brought the machete down hard.
As he slowly cut his way through the over-hanging vines Ed wondered why alchemists always felt the need to head to terribly overgrown spots to do these human transmutations, after all he and Al had done theirs in their fathers study. The thought sent a shiver up his spine.
No don't think about that he told himself “Are you sure this is the way?!” he yelled over his shoulder. “Y-yes sir” the timid alchemist said, Ed wasn't surprised that the man had confessed after all when `full metal” threatened to tear you a new one you started telling the truth.
He smirked at that thought as he begun hacking away at the vines again. Maybe his past and the reputation that went along with it was good for something, even if it was something he didn't really like. Growling to himself about `stupid bloody vines' Ed simply shrugged these thoughts off and continued hacking with renewed vigour.
Eventually they emerged into a clearing, a huge stone monolith standing at the centre, mounds at equal distance's radiating out from around it. Ed's eyes darted left and right in confusion “there must be hundreds of graves here?” he `asked' confused. That confusion quickly turned into fury as he suddenly whirled around “what the hell happened here?!” he yelled at the alchemist. His `answer' came in the form of chuckling “my master told me you'd be proud, does it hurt Full Metal? He told me you would be the only one to fully appreciate the beauty of these lands secrets”.
The insane alchemists ranting was cut off as Ed slammed his automail arm, blade extended into the mans gut. Visions of Lior flashed behind Ed's eyes as his fury peaked in a way it never had before, what was the point of what had occurred here? What was the point of bringing so many monsters into existence? This was far worse then even his most twisted darkest nightmares could aspire to and he was sickened to the point of insanity by it.
He felt the man cough up blood all over his coat “ask him yourself when he meets you in hell” he whispered, teeth gritted, before pulling his arm back the blade covered in blood. His vision slowly came back down from the ultra-violent red it had been and the implications of his actions hit him like a ten ton weight.
As Al and Roy watched him Ed slowly staggered away from the now lifeless corpse and sat down on a grass covered mound. Tears welled up in his eyes, he had murdered a man. The implication of that statement made his hands come up and cover his eyes as he drew his knees up and begun to sob openly.
There was blood on his hands, there always had been but he thought that all behind him but he had just revealed the truth to himself. He had always thought himself a monstrous freak and now he felt vindicated in his self-assessment. His mind raced in circles.
Lior, the homunculi, Ishbal and now the west. All three were linked by the stupidity and sadistic arrogance of alchemists such as himself. Why hadn't he seen this before? Why hadn't he realised that the only escape from the living nightmare that was his duty was death?
Or retirement. “Get a grip full metal” Looking up at Roy with tear filled eyes Ed sniffled “we've got a job to do, you can cry later” Ed was about to reply in anger when he remembered what he had said just yesterday. “Alright” he said his voice tense with sadness as he wiped away his tears “Where do we begin?”
Sweat cascaded off his bare torso as Ed shovelled earth like there was no tomorrow.
As the tip of the shovel hit something wooden Ed looked up at Roy and Al both digging as well “got another one!” he yelled across the clearing before throwing down his shovel and walking to the edge of the clearing.
As he stood there his chest rising and falling his muscles burning at the amount of physical work he had just done a small smile flickered across his lips. He suddenly felt better about this whole situation having worked it out of his system with physical labour.
“Brother?” Ed looked up from his hunched over position his hands on his knees to see Al standing there a questioning look in his eyes. “Yeah Al” Ed said struggling to level his breath. “I was just wondering about earlier….” Ed shot Al a gaze that told him to choose his next words carefully if he valued the ability to breathe “I-I mean umm…… It's just that I've never err……. Seen you that angry?” Al said looking nervous as Ed eyeballed him.
“It's nothing Al, just some untackled issues I'm trying to work through is all” he said a small smile crossing his face. “Y-Yeah but you ah……. Split in the man almost in two is all” Ed glared at Al. “Well take a look around you Al, who wouldn't want to snap that bastard in two for his part in all this” Ed snarled truthfully.
“Y-Yeah it's just….. Never mind” Al said turning away. “It's just what?!” Ed snapped, he hated how Al always did this making him drag questions out of him and make him feel bad for doing it. “Its just I wish I knew why you were so angry about all this is all” Al said his eyes full of brotherly concern “I mean I know it reminds you of our….. Mistake, but there's more to it then that isn't there?” he asked squatting down beside Ed.
Ed stared into his brothers worrying bronze eyes and almost wanted to punch the big lummox for being such a softy. “Yeah” he said with a sigh “There's a lot more to it” he stated simply letting Al know with a gaze that he really, really didn't want to talk about it.
Al obviously got the message because he stood back up and stretched before starting to walk away. He stopped and looked back over his shoulder at him “brother?” he asked his voice still concerned. “Yeah Al?” Ed asked staring up at his younger brother.
“When your ready to talk about it I'll listen just remember, sometimes it helps to talk about things” Ed sighed. “Sure Al” he said turning away, it helps to talk about things? Well maybe but not now, not until he dealt with them himself first.
A/U: Oohh, oohh…. Kick my ass? Kick my ass? I'm scared (L.O.L!). Well that's the fifth chapter, sorry if it's a short `un (that was not a pun!) but I've got two other series fanfics in the works as well (Burden and Guilt ridden II: That F'ing stone! (Coming soon)) and I'm finding it hard to focus on each one, their sort of bleeding through into each other. And new ideas just keep popping up in my head as well! Oh well, guess I'll just have to work harder at `Em wont I? If someone's reading this PLEASE review it, I'd love to know what ya'll think and what I could possibly change and what not. Later….
