Colonel Roy Mustang jerked awake, hauled out of his dreams by an unknown force. He lay still for a moment in the darkness of his room, listening for whatever it was that had woken him.
Then it came.
Soft sobs from the room next to his, in a voice very familiar to him. The walls in Calaan base weren't of the best quality mankind had developed; it was no great wonder that Edward had woken Roy.
A slight whimper filtered through the paper-like wall, then a full-fledged yell, startling the Colonel out of bed, into his deep red robe, and into the hallway.
The trip next door was ever so much fun; he tripped twice and almost killed himself by falling on Lieutenant Hawkeye and her pistol. “Where're you going, Colonel?” she asked suspiciously.
”To see Ed,” he replied with his usual emotionless `Colonel Bastard' voice. “He's upset, and he woke me up.”
Riza pushed herself off the floor. “Do you want me to come?”
“Thanks for the offer, but I'll be fine.” Roy sighed as his hand finally made contact with the doorknob. `I hope he will be, too…'
The Colonel heard Riza sigh as well as he slipped into the room and shut the door firmly behind him. He wasn't supposed to be doing this, he knew. His eyes fell on the figure thrashing slightly on clean white sheets, and he mirrored his Lieutenant's sigh.
He was Amestris' playboy. He was the one known for `getting around'. He'd stolen Havoc's girlfriend, and rarely went on a date without it ending up back at his apartment.
So why had he actually fallen for someone? And for Ed, of all someones? A kid; a damn annoying kid.
Ed groaned, bringing Roy out of his thoughts. The elder swallowed, eyes softening; he really did feel for this boy.
But could Edward really be considered a boy anymore? He was seventeen, eighteen in a month or so…
Roy dropped a comforting hand onto Ed's shoulder just a little awkwardly. The blond shied away, crying out; it was one hell of a nightmare. Roy couldn't think of anything else to do- he peeled back what little of the covers Ed hadn't managed to throw off and slipped in, wrapping his arms around Edward and pulling the smaller alchemist to him.
At first, Ed fought, obviously convinced whoever was holding him was bent on something other than comforting him, but he slowly relaxed, melting into Roy's warm embrace. Soon, his breathing was deep and even, straying over Roy's chest and warming the Colonel's shirt.
Roy sat berating himself. Not only had he succumbed to his feelings, but here he was, holding Ed. There would be… complications if he woke up. Eventually, though, Roy knew that that was it; he couldn't avoid what he felt.
So all he could do was bury his nose in the golden hair in front of him, and enjoy the ever-so-slight time he had with Edward Elric.
