Riza looked around the posh lobby of the restaurant for a moment. She was feeling out of place and uncertain of what she was doing. She had came for the match making date. A few tables were occupied with well-dressed people. A soft chatter could be heard over the restaurant.
"Have you made a reservation, Madam?" A well groomed waiter approached her with a broad smile.
"Ah yes, I am looking for-" Riza paused for a while, searching her brain for the name of her date. She had not bother to remember his name. She had planned to come to the dinner, sit through it and then bid farewell to the man at the end of the night. "-Pardon me, I am looking for this Mr. Rovski."
The waiter's eyes seemed to twinkle as he said, "Please come with me. Mr. Rovski had been expecting you."
Riza followed the waiter as he showed the way to a table at a quiet corner of the restaurant. The waiter pulled the chair back and motioned for her to have a seat. "Mr. Rovski went to take a call. He will be with you shortly."
Riza nodded. She was feeling nervous. She was feeling alittle cold at the same time. She was not used to wearing a sleeveless dress. Her mother had specially prepared a knee length, pearl white dress for her that night. And she had also ordered her to let her hair down.
She looked really stunning. She had attracted a few stares from men on her way to the restaurant.
Roy and Havoc came in a minute later. The same waiter approached them, "Have you made a reservation, Sir?"
"No, table for two please," Roy said. He was not looking at the smiling waiter, he was looking for Riza. Just as they were being led away, he spotted her. "Can we have the table over there?" He pointed to a table a few metres away from Riza's table.
"If you may, please let me check if it had been reserved, Sir." The waiter bowed, walking over to the counter.
"Eh, such a nice place, huh." Havoc commented. "I'll take Cindi here to make up to her in the next date."
Roy was not listening. His eyes was fixed at Riza. He could feel his heart beating wildly against his chest.
"Sir, it had not been reserved. Come with me please," The waiter came back a shirt while later. "The menu, Sir."
Roy took the menu from the waiter and flipped through it absentmindedly. 'Did she come early? Or was the man late?' He thought to himself.
"Whoa, what a nice price," Havoc mumbled, looking down the list of dishes in the menu. "I'm hungry, taisa. What do you say? I order what I want and you foot the bill. How about that?"
"Whatever you like." Roy replied quickly.
"Can you give me prawn salad, grilled mushroom... And medium rare sirloin steak... Ah and also garlic bread with clam chowder." Havoc said. He nudged the colonel with his elbow and asked, "What about you? What do you want?"
Roy gave Havoc a swept of dismissal. "I'm not hungry, you go ahead with it."
"So I repeat your order, Sir. Prawn salad, grilled mushroom, garlic bread with clam chowder... And a sirloin steak," The waiter paused, writing down the order on the order pad. "That will be medium rare. What will you like for a drink?"
"Let me see," Havoc said, looking down the wine menu. 'Since the colonel is going to give me a treat, I shall take up the responsibility and eat to my heart's content,' An evil thought crossed his mind. He smiled darkly as he spoke, "Chautea 1600. Thank you."
Riza was oblivious of her superior and her colleague's presence. She sat up straight in her seat. There was a tight knot at the pit of her stomach as she waited for Mr. Rovski. She let out a quiet sigh. 'What on earth did I get myself into?' She thought miserably. 'Just relax, everything will be fine...' She took a deep breath and let it out.
She closed her eyes and let her mind went blank, trying to relax herself. She saw nothing but a neverending black pit beneath her closed lids. Suddenly, Roy's face popped into her mind. She frowned deeply, trying to shake the image away.
Roy looked on in curiousity. He could see her blushing bright red.
"I hope I did not keep you waiting," A male voice interrupted her thoughts.
Riza's eyes snapped opened immediately. In front her, stood a man in a tuxedo. His brown hair was swept back and neatly combed. His clothes were neatly pressed. "What a fine lady you are, my pleasure to meet you." He smiled, flashing rows of pearly white teeth. He held his hand out.
She stood up nervously. And shook his hand. Instead of returning the handshake, Rovski took her hand, and planted a kiss on it. "No need to be jumpy, Miss Hawkeye." Still smiling. "I won't eat you." He winked playfully.
Riza just stared wide-eyed at him, uncertain of what to say.
"I was just joking. Have a seat," He gestured for her to sit.
Riza forced a smile and sat down nervously.
"Uh oh, here comes the rival." Havoc commented as he waited for the food to come. He peered over Roy's shoulder at Riza and Rovski.
Roy did not reply. He was trembling with anger. His face was red.
Havoc put a hand on Roy's shoulder and asked, "Oi, are you overreacting?" He sweatdropped.
Roy still did not reply. His chest had felt suffocated. He did not know he was overcame with jealousy then.
As minutes and seconds ticked by, Rovski tried to make conversation.
'He does not seemed like a bad man,' She thought. She was starting to open up alittle.
A wide spread of food came. And they chatted over dinner about general things. Like each other's pasttimes, occupation and family background, et cetera.
Havoc ate happily when his food came. Roy did not have an appetite. His eyes never left Riza and Rovski's table. He could not hear what they were chatting about. He could only see that Riza was enjoying the conversation and sparks were flying.
Roy reached into his pocket. He felt around for his fibre-static glove. Suddenly, he had an urge to put on his glove, walk over and burn the man in his tuxedo.
"Taisa, you should have a bite, this really taste good," Havoc said as he waved a forkful of steak beside Roy's cheek.
Havoc saw the fire in the colonel's eyes as he turned. The piece of steak burst into flames without warning. The fire missed Havoc's hair by just a few centimetres. He was frozen on his seat, still holding up the piece of steak in front of Roy.
"Thank you, I like my steak cooked thoroughly," Roy said through gritted teeth, a vein throbbing on his temple.
"Yes, Colonel..."
"Shall we?" Rovski asked, standing up from the table.
"Thank you for the meal, Mr. Rovski. It had been a wonderful evening," Riza smiled, standing up as well.
Roy shifted his attention to Riza immediately, upon hearing her voice. He looked on as the both of them stood up.
Rovski put his hand on Riza's waist lightly as he swerved her toward the exit.
Roy stood up. The chair toppled and fell onto the carpeted floor with a soft thud.
"Taisa??" Havoc said, surprised by the sudden move.
Roy patted Havoc on his shoulder and said, "Enjoy your meal, Second Lieutenant. I have something important to attend to." With that he followed the pair of the restaurant.
"But--You are supposed to foot the bill!!" Havoc cried after Roy. Roy disappeared out of the restaurant soon after.
Havoc stared at the half-eaten food on the table. He had lost his appetite.
"Are you alright, Sir?" The waiter had came over to pick up the fallen chair.
"...Can I have the bill, please?" Havoc said, starring into space.
"A moment, Sir," The waiter picked up the chair and went over to the counter to get the bill. "Here." He showed the tab to Havoc. "May I clear the table?"
Havoc's lips quivered, tears welling up in his eyes as he looked at the beautiful row of numbers on the bill. "I-I'll pay and I'll finish them up..."
"My pleasure," The waiter bowed again.
'Why do I always have to be so unlucky??' Havoc thought miserably as he shoved forkful and spoonful of food into his mouth.
