Fullmetal Alchemist Fan Fiction ❯ Souvenirs We Never Lose ❯ What Was ( Chapter 1 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

AN: Something like a prologue—but, after all, isn't any good prologue really just the first chapter of the story?

What Was…

“To gain, something of equal value must be lost.”
-Alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange

“To gain that which is worth having, it may be necessary to lose everything else.”
-Bernadette Devlin

Trembling slightly, Edward Elric dips finger in the rust-colored blood on the floor—his blood—which is just starting to coagulate.

Déjà vu, he thinks with an ironic half smile.

Slowly, carefully, he traces the symbols onto his body. Forehead, arms, heart.

He hears a voice, an echo of two days ago, in his mind as he draws the last circle.

`I have to go. But I'll be back. I promise.'

Ed smiles again, softly, sadly, but his eyes are on fire.

`I love you, Squirt. Come back to me.'

He raises his two hands, now matching flesh, to the circle on his chest, gently placing his fingers on the border.

`Wait for me?'

His still-wet tears betray his serene expression as the symbols begin to glow blue.

`I always do.'

“Al…”

Roy…

He closes his eyes and hopes.

The light flares and when it is gone, so is he.

“And it all comes down to one quotable phrase:
If you love something, give it away.”
-Bright Eyes
