The Choice
A Full Metal Alchemist drabble by Setzuka
PG-13 rated FMA drabble circa Ishbal War. Roy centric.
In the abandoned home, Roy Mustang stood on the soiled floor. He could still see the stain from where their blood hadsoaked into and between the wooden slats. He was standing in a similar spot as when he'd confronted the two frightened doctors, the woman holding a picture to her chest. He'd only been following orders.
Roy realized that this was a poor excuse. A soldier isn't a machine. A soldier knows the difference between right and wrong. He knows that executing two civilians on a mission of mercy is murder. But…wouldn't Gran just have done it himself? Or gotten a more willing person to do what he had done? If he hadn't done what Gran wanted of him, what would have become of him? Roy valued his career as both a member of the Amnestrian army, as well as that of a State Alchemist. All of his work would have been for naught.
So is that the price of a human life? Roy asked himself. He couldn't forget the woman's face as her husband's blood splashed onto her skin. The hurt and anger in her eyes as she crumpled to the floor, her body impacting with a harsh thud. The glass of the picture frame shattering as it hit the ground. Roy remembered that the photo was of a smiling little girl as his hands trembled.
Roy looked at the stain on the ground. The bodies had been removed. But the evidence of his source of shame was still there. Weren't alchemists supposed to be of and for the people? With a heavy heart, he fingered the gun in the holster at his side. How could he continue? Roy quickly removed the gun from its place. He held gun under his chin with trembling hands, prepared to pull the trigger. Until Marco walked in.
Roy never had the nerve to take the final step.
End.
