Edward Elric tossed back and forth on his bed, his brow covered in sweat. Deep in a restless sleep, Ed moaned softly and began to thrash on the mattress, his automail scraping the sheets. Within his sleep, Ed was tormented by a voice in his head, whispering destruction and despair to him.
“Release me! I must be allowed to past through the gate! The world's destruction is inevitable if I cannot come through! Release me, human! Use your skill! Use the magic you call alchemy! the rough and powerful voice commanded. Ed desperately resisted.
Suddenly he was standing before an immense stone gate. Edward's whole body went numb and stiff. This is it! Edward gasped. This is the gate that took away our bodies! That night Al and I tried to bring back our mom! The gate loomed before him, but he noticed something different about it. This gate was identical to the one he saw, except that the sides were guarded by two dragon figures engraved into the stone. Edward eyes widened in fear as the voice returned, louder than his thoughts.
“RELEASE ME NOW! THE FATE OF YOUR WORLD DEPENDS ON IT! USE ALCHEMY NOW!” the voice screamed. The gate doors began to swing open and an enormous red dragon stretched its head and neck forward. The dragon's eyes locked on Ed and it roared, “DO IT NOW!”
Edward writhed on his bed, struggling to keep his hands apart. The dragon's face filled his mind, and it willed him to clap his hands together. He slowly lowered his hands towards the mattress. He tried to resist the urge to use his alchemy, but the dragon's influence was too strong.
Ed screamed terribly as his hands connected with the mattress. The blue glow of his alchemy engulfed the bed and lightning flared around him. When the glow subsided, Ed was lying awake, trembling on his sheets, covered in a cold sweat.
The door to his room burst open, and Al and Winry rushed to his side. Both of them looked fearful and uncertain.
“Brother?” Al asked gently.
“Al? Winry?” Ed croaked. His eyes focused on the two of them, his golden gaze filled with emotion. Winry gasped. Ed's normally fearless eyes were wide and distant. For once in her life, Winry did not recognize him. Edward Elric, the Fullmetal Alchemist, was terrified.
“I saw it,” Ed shivered. “The gate, and then the dragon appeared. He forced me to use alchemy, and because of my weakness, I let him enter this world. The red dragon is free.”
“Ed, what are you talking about?” Winry asked cautiously.
“In my dream, a dragon came out of the gate I saw. But, it wasn't the same gate that took Al's body. It was some other gate. The dragon made me open it with alchemy, and now I know he's in this world,” Ed explained, his body still quivering, his voice shaky.
“What could this mean?” Al wondered. “I'll get you some water, Brother.” Al's armor body clanked loudly as he rushed off.
“I've never seen you like this. It must have been awful,” Winry said quietly.
“It's nothing, Winry. You don't have to worry about it,” Ed muttered.
“Yes I do! You were terrified about this dream, and now it has turned into a reality! I want to help you.” Winry angrily slammed her fist on the bed. Ed just stared at his automail arm rest in his lap. He didn't know what his dream meant, but he had to find the dragon. He knew that. The beast had to have emerged from the gate somewhere near the Rockbell house.
“Here, Brother,” Al clanked back into the room and offered a glass of water to Ed. The blonde took the glass and downed the water thankfully. He was still uneasy, but his resolve was strong once more. He looked at Al.
“Tommorrow morning we're going to look for that dragon, Al. I have to find it and send it back through the gate.”
“I'm coming, too,” Winry announced.
“No, you're not! It's too dangerous!” Ed retaliated.
“You'll need my help, Edward. Someone as small as you'll need as much help as you can get, especially if you're facing a dragon,” Winry replied.
“WHO ARE YOU CALLING SOMEONE SO SMALL HE'D NEED A HUNDRED PEOPLE STACKED ON TOP OF EACHOTHER JUST TO GET TO EYE LEVEL WITH A DRAGON?!” Edward ranted.
“No one said that, brother,” Al sighed.
“I said you can't come, Winry, and that's—” Ed abruptly stopped when Winry exposed her infamous wrench and threatened to thump Edward over the head.
“Okay, okay! You can come,” Ed muttered quickly. Winry lowered her wrench and smiled sweetly.
They all went back to bed after that, and Ed couldn't fall back asleep. He lay in bed, wondered about the dragon's purpose in coming through the gate. He rose early that morning and called Al out with him.
“Why are we leaving so early, Brother? Isn't Winry coming with?” Al asked.
“We're leaving now so Winry can't come with. Like I said, it's too dangerous for her.” Ed said.
