chapter one

"Damn it!"
Roy Mustang's gloved hand slammed onto his desk, his brow furrowed. He had been
doing paper-work all day, and now that he finally got to relax, he recieves a manilla folder with a stamp of 'Utter Importance' on it. He knew what that meant. It meant that another one had been killed.
"I get one day off and then someone else just has to die." he mumbled as he slumped back into his chair. He cracked his knuckles and rested his chin on his palm.
"BRODA, FURY, HAWKEYE, ELRICS, ELLEN!" he yelled, moaning afterward. 'Can't we just get an office intercom installed?' he whined mentally.
Six people ran into the office, saluting and standing up straight after making a straight line.
"Broda reporting!" confirmed a portly man in his twenties with bronze hair.
"F-Fury reporting!" stammered a smallish man with glasses and black hair.
"Edward Elric reporting!" a teenage boy with a blonde braid called with a smirk.
"Alphonse ready for duty!" said a metal suit of armor triumphantly.
"Ellen is here and ready!" stated the only girl in the room with brown hair and brown eyes. She smiled and saluted, sticking her tongue out in the process.
Roy looked them over and asked, "Where's Riza?"
"She couldn't be here. Family matters," the brunette girl named Ellen said.
"Riiiight. Just being lazy, as usual... Anyway, you guys know why we're here. Another one's been found dead, this time with an infant as well. I've read that this one was also reported just outside of Resembool." Roy told them, standing to pace across his new office.
Roy had been promoted to Fuhrer, seeing as King Bradley had been killed. He had taken the job right off of the bat, but wasn't scared in the least. He said that he knew he would be asked to uphold the responsibilty at some point, but he didn't know it would have been so soon. Never the less, he was turning out to be a relevantly good Fuhrer, except Riza.
Riza didn't think so only because he tried to get all of the female employees there to wear 'super tiny mini-skirts' like he had before.
We don't think his black eye, nor his sprained wrist or broken jaw are quite healed yet.
"Outside of Resembool? So that damned 'Kira' is coming a little closer to home, is he? I won't take it. Can't we just go find him and kill him, Roy?" Broda complained.
They had adopted the name 'Kira' for the murderer because 'Kira' in Japanese means 'killer'. [Not stolen from 'Death Note']
"Broda, don't be so rash. All we know about Kira is that he really likes to mutilate his victims. Plus, you honestly think you'd have a chance against a person no one has seen?" Roy asked with heavy sarcasm.
Broda looked at his fellow state alchemists with shifty eyes and blushed.
"Feh." was all he said.
"Didn't think so. Anywho, you all will be sent to investigate this latest one. I hear it's really bloody out there. You might want to wear some golashes." Roy told them with skepticism.
"You're sending us? Come on, Roy! All we're gonna find is a buncha dead bodies, right? Why not send Johnson, Patricks, and Ment again?" Edward moaned.
"Because, I've tortured them enough. This one should be interesting for you guys, anyway. I thought you all might need a little field trip. Wouldn't you rather be out there that in this office, shrimp?" Roy asked Edward, bending down just to pick on him.
Edward's face became red with fury, but he didn't move. He had been in a small relationship with Ellen as of late and she had personally proved to him that being short wasn't all that bad after all.
"Feh! Whatever! Let's just go before it starts raining," Edward snapped while walking out.
The others followed him, all except for Ellen. She sat in the chair in front of Roy's desk, a pleased look on her face.
Roy took one look and groaned. He sat down in his chair and glared at her, handing her a wad of money.
"I told you he would be more life-like than you could handle," Ellen said with a laugh. She counted the money in the wad with a grin.
"I'll give it to you, El. You really have a way with machinery. If the real Edward had been here, he would be really proud of you." Roy commented.
Ellen felt a small stab in her heart. She thanked him, but sighed outright. Her eyes closed and she was starting to remember what it was like before that night, but she stopped herself. She had promised that she would never let herself get down because of that.
You see, after Edward was killed by Envy, the world just didn't seem right. Ellen had been depressed for several weeks and during that time, she had been thinking heavily.
One afternoon, she returned to her time and brought back materials from some of her very renowned mechanic friends.
She had built an Edward using biomechanical cells, which in her time of the futuristic 2300, are basically microscopic wires and microchips infused with the genetic DNA of real human cells. This would disguise any evidence of a project being a robot and not human. The material itself, named NANOS by Ellen because the real name was far too long for any normal person to remember, took on a fleshy feel, making the project slightly squishy, just like a human. The material even created its own oil that ran through the automatically composed veins, slightly like blood. It was even crimson in colour.
This is how the future lived so pleasantly among the artificial intelligence. They disguised them as humans themselves, making them have similar opinions and the ability to carry on a relevant conversation. Also, there were less complications.
An average 'prehistoric' robot, as Ellen called them, would catch a hard drive virus faster than a hare could outrun a fox. For this reason, she had eveloped the Edward duplicate so that it would have a somewhat actual mind instead of just machinery up there in his head.
Ellen had aken a microchip with trillions [literally trillions] of gigabites of space and placed it into one of her own computers. Then, she had emptied out Edward's file that HQ had kept and scanned every last little thing in there. She had also recorded audio converstaions between herself and people that knew Edward and placed those in his FMF [False Memory Files]. With also adding everything from Edward's old alchemy notebooks into his mind, she had taken a cord and plugged it into the lifeless Edward 'doll' she had created with the NANOS and stuck it into a small, barely noticable UPS port behind his ear.
With all of that said and done, the Edward clone was alive. He was able to think for himself quiet literally. He rebelled and argued. He laughed and even cried. Yes, this robot could cry.
Thanks to the NANOS, his 'skin' wasn't irritated by water like a normal robot's would be. The only thing that could bother the NANOS in the Edward-bot was, you guessed it, milk. He could be near it, but it could not enter his system. If it did, he would reboot automatically and lose every bit of data in his FMF. If that happened...well, let's just say it would really suck.
"But, even though I made him just like Edward, I'll never be able to..." Ellen stopped herself. She sighed again and got up to leave.
"First thing tomorrow, Ellen. Be prepared to see som pretty gross things out there," Roy reminded, shuffling through the folder.
Ellen stopped. "Psh, gross, huh? Sounds pretty feminine if you asked me," Ellen replied, smirking. She tossed something back at Roy without looking at him and comtinued to walk out of his office.
Roy caught the item in his hand. He smiled as he felt at least half of the bet money he had given to Ellen back into his hand.
