Chapter 8: The truth behind Hanjara City

Five months ago

Eastern command quarters

It was only seven in the morning yet Roy was already in his office. He was waiting for the Elric brothers to arrive. He was going to assign them for another assignment. It was about a small city in the mountain parts of the east.

“What the heck do you want now Mustang?” Ed slammed the door as they went in. he was still kind of sleepy because of last night. He and Al were on the library researching about the philosopher's stone up to midnight.

Roy glared at him, “ Don't you even want to greet me a good morning? Huh fullmetal?”

He took a file out of his desk, “ Here re some information about your new assignment. I want you to inspect about the mysterious activities that are happening in Hanjara.”

Al was quite startled when he heard the word Hanjara, “ If I'm not mistaken, I heard that a group of military soldiers were still missing after they went there.” He quivered.

“Don't tell me you're scared Al!” Ed smirked. “ That's ridiculous! They might sill be around you know…”

“ I hope you're right Ed… but It has been a 8 months… and yet we haven't got any news about them…” Roy spoke firmly. “ So I am counting on you…. And besides I heard that the people there are following someone that they call Meianj. I want you to investigate about that guy is that clear.”

Ed just took the file and strode away. He didn't say a word but there was an intense curiosity flowing inside him. He was thinking that the citizens of Hanjara might be making the philosopher's stone.

+ In the train+

“Brother…do you think they are making the stone?” Al asked Ed who was staring outside the window as if he could find the answer in the sky.

Ed murmured, “ I hope so… because if that's the case… there's no one who could stop me from getting that.” Then he stared at Al, “ I promise…Al.”

+Hanjara city: Mt. Ashcon:

Ed and Al were totally stunned.

The city was far different from what they expected. It was similar to American Indians style. Citizens were living in huts. People were wearing animal fur and feathers as their clothes. It seemed that modern civilization haven't even reached them.

“ Look father!! We've got visitors!!” a young boy squealed.

Ed and Al were quite noticeable because of their unique color and attire. The Hanjars were quite similar to Ishbalans except that their hair and eyes were as black as charcoal.

“Hello!! My name is Jean and I'm only 5 years old. It's nice to meet you!!” the boy grinned.

Al smirked, “ Hi! I'm Alphonse… and this is my older brother…. Edward…”

“OLDER BROTHER?? How come!!! But you look much taller than him?”

Ed suddenly went mad, “ NOT AGAIN!!! WHY!! BECAUSE I'm TOO SHORT!!! THAT WE”RE JUST THE SAME HUH KID!!!”

“Jean… that's not the proper way to welcome our guests…” An old man +probably in his late forties+ approached them. “ I am Merlin… Jean's father…”

“ Let's get down to business… I want to meet this Meianj guy…” Ed shrieked.

Jean smirked, “You want to meet Master Meianj!!! You know what, he's a wondedrful person!! He's the one who teaches us about the wonders of nature!!!”

Merlin carried his son; “ We'll bring you later to him… for the meantime you could rest at our place. It seems that you two had traveled Far.” He grinned as they strode away.

“Well thank you sir” Al bowed.

Ed remained quiet. He just followed them without a word that was quite unusual.

+9:00 pm+

Ed was already furious because Merlin hadn't come back. He told them that he would bring them to him once he returned. He needed to do something important first.

“Where the hell could he be?! It's already 9 in the evening! How we suppose to see that guy!” Ed was pacing back and forth in their room. His arms were tightly crossed

Al was a slightly irritated by him, “ Brother would you please stop that. Don't you know you're a bit annoying now? He might be doing something really important. I suggest we do our work tomorrow morning.” He said calmly.

Ed took his cloak and fixed himself, “ No I cant. Al I feel that something is wrong in this town…. I'm so sure…. And that Merlin guy… I think his hiding something from us…” he whispered.

“Brother… but if we leave… how about Jean?!”

“ I'm going alone… so you better watch him” Ed said firmly. “ You can't come with me because he might found out that I'm investigating this place for the military.” Then he strode away. Leaving Al who was totally upset because of his decision.

+In the forest+

A group of people wearing black coat were heading towards a cave in the middle of the forest. Ed decided to hided in he bushes for the meantime. After that he followed them inside. And just like what he thought, those people were around in a huge transmutation circle.

“MERLIN…. I heard you're keeping two guest in your place.” The one who was seating in the rock boulder +which acts as his throne+.

“Yes… Master Meianj… but are you sure that he is a state alchemist… he's quite small and young for the job.” Merlin bowed down on him like he was some kind of a Lord.

Meianj glared at him, “ Are you doubting me now… Merlin? That Edward Elric might be as puny as an ant but he just passed the State Alchemist Exam at the age of 12.”

Ed +hiding in the rocks+ was totally pissed. Unfortunately, he had no choice but to hold his blazing anger or they might found out that he was there.

But Meianj knew that he was there. “ I guess you don't need to hide from us Mr. Elric. Why don't you come and join us.” He stood and walked towards him.

Ed chose to show up before he could reach him, “ So you're the infamous Meianj… tell me… where are the soldiers… what the fucking hell did you do to them!” he ran towards him as he transmuted his automail arm in to a dagger.

And before he could even lay it at him, Meianj clapped his hands a used alchemy to summon the gate of alchemy.

“WHAT THE!!!!” Ed was totally startled by it. “ How the hell could you do that!!”

Meianj smirked in a very irritating way, “ Why? Are you surprise Ed? You see I can do that because…” he carefully removed his black coat revealing his true idenification. “I'm still a kid….”

“You're a…. a kid!! But why are taller than me!!! That's so unfair!!!” Ed yelled.

Meianj laughed, “ Oh I'm so sorry pipsqueak but I'm still 10 years old”

“Let's drop this crap!! Answer me!! What have you done with the soldiers!!! And how come you can summon the gate!!!” Ed squealed angrily.

“Well they are inside the gate… and It's quite simple my dear… I'm still quite innocent than you… though I couldn't summon the gate much often than before…”

“WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS!!! IS THIS FOR THE PHILOSOPHER”S STONE!!!! TELL ME!!!!”

Meianj glared at him, “ Do you really want to know… then I'll just show you the reason.”

And to his surprise, Meianj just tried to send his body and soul inside the gate.

Ed was struggling against the forces that were taking him inside the gate.

But he failed.

He was completely inside the gate.

“What the hell happened to me?”

It was a vacuum place. But he seemed to have seen five girls but their faces were a bit blurry.

“Excuse me… Miss…”Ed tried to follow them but they just simply vanished.

“Am I inside the gate… but… how? Oh I remember now!! That stinking bastard!!!” Ed grasped his fist. “ I'll show him what I can do!!”

But before he could even perform Alchemy, he was totally startled because his pocket watch just glowed.

There was a blinding light.

And when he opened his eyes, he was already back in the cave.

Ed whirled around but there was no sign of people anymore. He immediately rushed to check if Al was al right.

“AL!!!AL!!!! “

“Edward!! But how did you?” Meianj and Merlin were both surprised to see Ed again.

Ed glared at them, “ What have you done with my Brother!!!” He rushed towards Meianj but good thing he succeeded that time.

Meianj was directly stabbed in his stomach. Merlin tried to protect him but I was already too late.

“Master Meianj!!!”

Ed shrugged him, “ Where's Al!!!”

“Tell me... How was you're trip inside the gate? What have you found out?” Meianj wasn't that hurt by Ed's attack. He still managed to sit on the floor.

“Brother!! Brother!! You're back!! Hey what happened to him?” Al worriedly asked.

Ed suddenly felt relieved to find that Al was safe.

“Ed… Please I need your answer!! You're the only one who managed to return!!” Meianj swiftly changed his attitude towards Ed.

“Why? What's the matter with you!! I can't believe you just sent me inside the gate!”

“Have you seen someone there? Tell me!! Are there people inside it!!!” Meianj seemed to be pleading to Ed.

“ Master... What are you doing? You told me that he is an enemy!”

“MERLIN I WANT YOU TO LEAVE US NOW!!!” Meianj ordered.

Merlin was certainly shocked but he had no choice but to follow his order. He walked away and carefully closed the door.

“Ed… tell me…”

“Yah… yah… I saw five girls… but I'm not sure about their looks because their faces were a bit blurry…”

Meianj's face suddenly glowed with happiness. “ I WANT YOU TO KILL ME…RIGHT NOW!!” he said firmly.

“WHAT!!!” Al and Ed both squealed. “Are you insane!!”

Meianj stared at them with teary eyes, “You have to kill me or I'll surely die here inch by inch!!!”

“But why?!” Al asked. “ What do you mean?”

“There's no much time!! I have been stayed here for a long time!! Please Ed!!!”

Ed stared at him. He saw an intense feeling in his eyes. It seemed that he was really serious about it.

“Is Meianj your real name? I want to know before I do your request.”

“Brother, are you serious? But?”

Meianj smirked, “ I am Ivan”

“Well then… I'm so sorry that I have to kill you in order to help you…”

That was the first time that Ed killed a kid. But he had no choice. It was his request. After that he discovered that his pocket watch was missing. He realized that he lost it when he was in the gate.

But what he didn't understand was Meanj/ Ivan's last request. And why is he sending people in the gate. Ed was so sure that he was not an evil person or something.
