Ed sat up and rubbed his eyes. Was it storming out? He could have sworn a flash of light just woke him up.
“Huh… good thing I like storms…” he slumped back down and curled up in the blankets.
“Niisan! Niisan! Wake up!!” Al ran into the bedroom, his metal armor clanking loudly. A soft mumble emerged from beneath the covers.
“Niisan, the Colonel is here to see you.” The covers flew off as Ed jumped from the bed.”
“Why didn't you tell me he was coming?!” He quickly threw on his shirt and jacket, straightening his hair a bit.
“I didn't know he was going to come today.” Al laughed lightly, his voice echoing through the metal.
“Oh well, not a big deal. Let's go.” The two brothers walked quickly down the hall and stairs to the front door of the home they were staying at. The Colonel Roy Mustang stood just inside the door talking to the owner. As he heard the boys approach, he turned around, a slight smirk on his face, like normal.
Alphonse bowed and greeted the Colonel cheerfully.
“Good morning Alphonse... Edward.” Ed glanced up at the Colonel, just catching his eye before they flicked away. What… was he looking at?
“Ready to go, Edward?” Roy asked casually, straightening his jacket and turning to the door.
“Yeah, sure,” Ed replied. Roy came every few weeks to check up on the two brothers. Since Ed was the state alchemist, Roy usually took him out for a bit to catch up and talk. Edward didn't think that was too unusual for alchemists to be doing, so it didn't bother him much.
Roy opened the door and walked out briskly, shouting out a quick goodbye to Al and the owner of the house over his shoulder. Ed tagged along behind, acting quite childish.
“Where're we going today?” Ed asked.
“Lunch. Then I have to stop by the office for something.”
“Mmm…food. Ok, sounds good.”
Walking up the steps of the office building, Ed stretched and patted his tummy.
“Wow, that was a good meal.”
“Glad you enjoyed it.” Roy was trailing a bit behind Ed. “Well, sounds like you and Al are keeping things up to pace. No major trouble?”
“Nope, everything's fine by me!” They arrived at the front door. Walking in, Roy mentioned something to the desk clerk and followed Ed through the hallway.
“Hey Ed, I'm gonna go grab some papers. Go ahead to my office. And don't mess anything up! Or you'll pay for it!”
“Yeah, yeah, I hear you,” Ed waved the Colonel off and navigated his way around corners, finally arriving at quite an elegantly decorated door. Pushing it open, Ed walked in and looked around.
“Same as always… such a bland room.” He walked over to the desk and looked out the window. “Getting late already…he better hurry up with whatever he needs. Well… I might as well make myself comfortable.”
While the Colonel was out, Edward spun childishly in his office chair. I can do whatever I want when he's not around. Slowing down a bit he looked around while trying to regain his balance. He listened intently for a few seconds to see if Roy was coming back yet.
“Well since he's not here…” Ed muttered, and slowly opened the top drawer to Roy's desk. Writing utensils, paper, a couple clips: all the normal office things. Ed moved onto the drawer on the right. He pulled out a small clear container filled with candy.
A confused and somewhat amused look sprung to his face.
“What… is he moving onto kids now? Or does he have some kinda candy fetish…”
Ed shrugged and put the candy away, rummaging around behind it. Quietly he pulled out a small purple notebook. It felt full of papers or cutouts. Sitting back in the chair, he flipped open the cover. A little dedication was scribbled down. -flip- Ed's eyebrow went up as he discovered what was on the first page.
“Okaaay… a picture of me. I guess that's alright.” The page revealed an early picture of Ed, grinning from ear to ear like he did sometimes when he was truly enjoying himself.
Non-chalantly he turned the pages of the book. There were numerous pictures taken of him when he wasn't looking. Sketches of him filled the edges and little notes his clothes, hair and body movements occupied the lines. Ed's eyes scanned the pages faster, a little anxious now. Finally he flipped open to one of the last pages. There lay a picture of him in bed, a storm raging outside the window. Not knowing it, Ed held his breath. That was the flash of a camera?? What…why… One of the scribbles caught his eye. Sweet, innocent face. Still a child, such a child. If only I could help him, take his pain away…
“He…what is this?” Ed felt his cheeks grow red as he scanned a couple more of the written lines. His head snapped up as he heard footsteps approaching the door. Swiftly he shoved the book back in its place and slid the drawer shut. Spinning around in the chair, he leaned back and pretended to watch the sky outside, his face bright red. I wasn't supposed to find that, was I?
“Haganeno,” Roy's voice floated to Ed's ears from behind him. Trying to put on a normal face, Ed turned the chair around. The turn revealed Roy with his hands on his hips, looking at Ed with a stern face.
“What are you doing in my chair?” No good. Ed's face lit up again and he faked a cough.
“Nothing. I just felt like sitting down,” he said as he spun back around. At the sight of Ed's face, Roy instantly relaxed his and walked to the chair. Putting his hand on the back, he leaned over next to the boy.
“Hey, Fullmetal. You alright?” Ed detected a slight note of worry in Roy's voice. His heart beat a little faster.
“Yeah, I'm fine.” He hoped that had come out sounding kinda annoyed, like he usually was with Roy.
Roy let the chair go and opened up the drawer Ed was just in. Ed's heart raced as the Colonel rummaged around. I hope I didn't mess things up too much… The noise from behind him ceased and he sensed Roy beside him.
“Wanna piece of candy?” Ed raised an eyebrow and turned his head to look at Roy. Roy's face was calm, but his eyes glinted with concern. Ed blushed slightly.
“Uh...sure…I guess,” he said, taking the treat from Roy's hand hesitatingly and popping it in his mouth.
“Hey, this is pretty good.” Ed pushed the chair back and forth slowly while he moved the candy around with his tongue.
“I knew it would cheer you up.” Roy leaned back against the desk, staring out the window with Ed. “It's very pretty out tonight…”
“Almost picture-perfect,” Ed chimed in.
“Yeah…you're right.” Roy walked around to the other side of the desk and opened a drawer, pulling out something. After a bit of fumbling, Ed heard a click, then saw a flash. His eyes opened wide.
“You're a photographer, Roy?” Ed asked jokingly. Roy smiled.
“Not really. I just take pictures of really pretty things. Ed's cheeks burned.
“Roy…” The Colonel walked back to the other side of the desk and opened the drawer with the notebook in it. He pulled out the small purple book and stuck the Polaroid he just took near the back. Ed put a fake look of interest on his face.
“What's that?” Roy looked up.
“My photography book.” He sat down on his knees in front of Ed and set the notebook on Ed's lap. “Have a look.”
“R-roy…I…” Ed started to become angry. What is he doing? He takes pictures of me and stores them?! And what's with this caring face?! Ed flipped open to the picture of him in bed.
“This is what you photograph?! Me?!” Roy looked surprised. Ed started to get up angrily, but Roy stopped him.
“Edward…you've seen this?” Ed crossed his arms hastily.
“Yeah, I looked through your drawer while you weren't here…” he mumbled, a frown on his red face. Suddenly he felt arms around his waist.
“I…I couldn't help it, Ed.” Roy mumbled into Ed's stomach. “You're very photogenic.”
Ed's heart beat faster. What…why…this is the Colonel! A guy! It shouldn't feel good! He tried to push the Colonel off him.
“C'mon Roy. Stop fooling around. Throw away that notebook and move.” Roy let go and looked up with a disappointed face. Then he heavily stood up and sighed.
“Roy…” Ed's heart ached. Why? I don't care for him at all… He found himself with his hand on Roy's arm.
