~Discovered~
“C'mon Roy. Stop fooling around. Throw away that notebook and move.” Roy let go and looked up with a disappointed face. Then he heavily stood up and sighed.
“Alright… if that's what you want.”
“Roy…” Ed's heart ached. Why? I don't care for him at all… He found himself with his hand on Roy's arm. “I…I didn't mean to be so harsh.” Oh who am I kidding? What am I doing? Pick a side, brain! “Just…get rid of it. It's weird, being watched by a guy like that. And of all people, the Colonel.”
Roy's eyes fell to the desk, and the notebook sitting on it. Slowly his hand opened the cover as he went through the pictures, seeming to savor every detail of Ed in every picture. “I'm sorry, Ed.” Roy felt his eyes grow warm as his vision began to get blurred by tears.
“I'm sorry… I never meant to make you angry, or offend you in any way. I just enjoyed watching you. At first it was just a bit of sympathy for how you had to live your life everyday, with the guilt for Alphonse…” Roy closed his eyes as a thin stream of silent tears ran down his cheeks. A small smile formed on his lips as he opened his eyes to look over at Ed. “But with both the image I had made for myself and how everyone knows you hate sympathy, I couldn't very well come out and tell you.”
Ed's eyes darted from the saddened sight he saw in front of him. Staring at a particularly interesting spot on the floor, he waited to hear more of Roy's explanation.
“While you grew stronger and more mature, my interest couldn't help but be sparked even more. I…I started to fall in love with you. Secretly I took pictures and notes about you so I could enjoy watching you while you weren't around. The night of the storm, I was so close to waking you up… I was so close… I could have taken you in my arms right then and…”
Pain shot through Ed's heart. Warmth spread through his face again as angry tears came to his eyes. “Well, you're right! I do hate sympathy! I don't need it!” Roy's pained eyes followed Ed's form as he stormed to the desk and hastily grabbed the notebook, a couple photographs falling from the covers. “Stop fantasizing! None of what you want is ever going to happen.” Steaming drops of water fell heavily from Ed's eyes. “I don't need someone like you interested in stuff like this. I don't need anyone worried about me or watching my every move! If I need help, I'll get it. But I don't need help like that… not in the way you're thinking. Just…stop!”
Closing his eyes tightly, he walked quickly past Roy towards the door, scrubbing up his tears with the sleeve of his jacket.
“Edward…!” Roy's hand clasped Ed's wrist. Ed stopped, but didn't dare turn around. He knew he would only find Roy's face covered in worry and pain, and he definitely didn't need that. “Ed… please. Please just don't…” Prying his wrist from Roy's grip, Ed walked quickly to the door and excused himself, shutting it heavily behind him.
Holding his hand out as if he was trying to grab something that wasn't there, Roy stood in shock. Slowly he turned and stumbled to his chair. Burying his face in his arms, tears flowed freely into the dark blue fabric of his uniform.
“Who would have ever thought… someone like me could be heartbroken…”
“d…ed…Ed!” Ed opened his eyes slowly, blinking to clear his vision. Immediately memories of Roy's hurt face and the feeling of his arms around his waist came rushing to Ed's mind. Turning his head, he found Al looking down at him. His voiced sounded worried and caring. Oh no…he must've heard me come in last night. Was I crying too hard…? Groggily Ed sat up and rubbed his eyes, yawning to try and push the sleepiness out of his body. He looked down to find that he was still in his regular clothes, boots and all. Straightening out his hair, he looked up to Al. Through the cold metal he could see his brother's eyes watching him and silently asking if he could help with anything.
“I had a bad dream…don't worry about anything. Why don't we go get some breakfast?” Slowly he stood up and led Al out the door and down the hall.
Walking into the already bustling mess hall, Ed's eyes cautiously darted around quickly, searching for the man who had haunted his dreams the night before. No sign of him… good. I wouldn't be able to handle him. The two brothers found their way to the food spread out across some tables near the head of the room. Grabbing a plate, Ed scantily filled his plate with breakfast foods. Al scouted out the room for an isolated spot for the two to sit, and upon finding one, led Ed to the end of a table in the corner of the room. Ed picked at the food he had put on his plate, taking a bit every now and then.
“Niisan… is something wrong?” Ed continued to stare at his plate. If he looked into Al's eyes now, he would burst into tears. Why would Roy do this to him? It seemed as if Roy was mocking him… as if he was making Ed out to be someone who couldn't care for himself.
“No… like I said, it was just a bad dream. Sorry if I've worried you.” Ed picked at his food, quickly losing his appetite. Sighing, he stood up and threw away what was left on his plate. “Let's go.” As they walked past the hallway to the main part of the building, Al piped up.
“Ne, Niisan. Don't you have to go give a morning report to the Colonel?” Ed tripped over his own boot as his face turned red. He turned away from Al. “No… I talked to him last night. He said I didn't have to give morning reports for a while.” Slowing their pace, the brothers reached their bedroom door and went inside. Ed sprawled himself out on his bed and let out a long breath. Suddenly he remembered he had taken the notebook from Roy's desk as he stormed out the night before. Adrenaline starting to rush through him, he sat up abruptly and looked around him. The notebook was nowhere in sight. Pushing aside the covers, Ed looked for any hint of purple. Nothing.
“I'll be right back, Al.” Ed opened the door and rushed out. Without looking, he turned the corner of the hallway and ran right into the chest of a uniformed man. Looking up, he saw the surprised face of the Colonel he had been avoiding all morning.
An awkward silence filled the air as their eyes met, both unable to break the gaze.
“E…Edward…” Roy managed to stutter out at last.
