The house fell silent. Edward was still lying in bed with the carcass of Kate as if she were alive. He had cried out all of his tears, but still had a few left. He had been there for hours hugging and holding his dead fiancé. A defining roar of thunder approached the small town along with the rain. The rain drops hit the glass window and the lightning lit the room. Edward began to speak to Kate as he stroked her back and held her close. “I remember… when we had a storm similar to this. All the loud noises and the lightning… I'm sure you do to,” he said smiling weakly. “It was when we were about nine…”
~flashback~
Edward: 9 1/2; Kate: 9
Bang… Boom… Crash…
Kate held her ears tight as she lay in the dark room upon a bed. She pulled the covers up over her head as she cried softly, scared of the unpleasant sound of thunder. The thunder crashed once more, making her gasp and shiver. Quietly, she tiptoed through the dark hall and into Edward and Alphonse's room. She stared as Edward slept soundly through the storm. Once again, the thunder boomed and sent Kate running to Edward's bed. She crawled into his bed and under the covers, making him jump and wake. He looked around, unsure of what was going on, and found Kate snuggled up to him. “Kate?”
“I-I'm sorry Edward. I… I got scared,” she said looking up at him with a tear-stained face.
“Hey, It's alright,” he said putting an arm around her. He hugged her tightly and kissed her head. “I've got you. Everything will be okay,” he said calmly with a warm smile.
Kate smiled back and embraced Edward, snuggling up to his warm chest.
“Kate?” Edward asked.
“Hmm?” she asked pressing her face against his chest.
“I dunno it's just,” he sighed and held her closer, “If we sleep here tonight, we're gonna get in trouble if the old lady catches us,” he said with a hint of a laugh. “We're not even allowed to kiss without getting a lecture. I don't think sleeping in the same bed's any better.”
Kate smiled and put her hands on Edward's waist and pressed her body right up to his. She began to nibble on his neck.
Edward giggled. “You're silly,” he said kissing her cheek.
“They won't catch us,” she said. She was on her way to kiss his lips passionately, but jumped and held on to Edward when the thunder boomed again.
Ed gasped and looked at Kate. Kate smiled and looked back up at him, making them both laugh. “I'll finish that for you.”
“Huh?-” but before Kate could say anything else, Edward pressed his mouth against hers, tasting her lips.
“That was your first REAL kiss, huh?” he asked blushing.
Kate had butterflies in her stomach. “Ummm… yeah,” she smiled and kissed Ed's nose. A few minutes later, they both fell asleep, forgetting about the loud storm.

“We still got in trouble, though,” Edward sniffed and wiped the tears rolling from his eyes. “Yep… You were great, Kateland. I love you. I still do,” he said brushing his finger across her cold lips. Her body began to stiffen from death. “Why did you have to leave us?” he asked. He pressed his head down on her chest and began to cry again.

“Wh-Where am I? This must be…” She gasped as her eyes grew bigger, “The gate…”
There before her stood a great gate that separated two dimensions; the real world from their world. “That's right. When I died… I was put here. Now… I'm supposed to be drug to the other side. What's going on?”
Kate, who was in between worlds, stood stiff as she looked at the gate. “This is the place Ed told me about. Kate squinted her eyes with tears pouring out of them as she knelt down and curled up in a tight ball. “How will I ever get back to him…”

Edward woke the next morning, still in bed with Kate's body. She looked as if she were sleeping rather than dead. Ed heard foot steps come upstairs and open the bedroom door. It was Winry.
“Ed,” she said sadly. “You can't…” she sighed and wiped a tear from her eye. “You can't stay here with her forever. Eventually we're going to have to plan a funeral and burry her where she can sleep in peace. You have to move on… there are other women in this world.”
“SHUT UP, WINRY!” he shouted, making her flinch with tears. “There are NOT other women in the world that I would love! Nothing or no one can replace Kate! I loved Kate more than ANYTHING in this God-for-saken world! What makes you think I can find someone else?!”
“I'm sorry Ed…”
Baby Edward began to cry. His loud cries made Edward cry even more. Edward stood up, turning his back to Winry. “Please just… Just go away, you're making everything worse…” He walked over to his son, who was bawling of hunger. “I'm sorry Ed… Mommy's gone and she's never coming back…” he said picking him up and hugging him tightly as he would Kate. Tears continued to roll out of his eyes.
A couple of hours later, after the baby had gone to sleep, Edward continued to lie in bed with what used to be Kate. It was late evening; the moon shining outside and into the window. Alphonse knocked on the door and opened it. “Brother,” he said, “are you sure?”
“Al,” Edward stood up, “I can't live without her… I need her back into my life. Whether it means giving up mine, or sacrificing my entire body,” he said with his hair hiding his eyes.
Alphonse's eyes filled with tears, “Brother, you can't! We swore; we made an oath! We promised never to attempt that again!”
Edward fell silent.
“What if you do end up loosing your own life?! Or your body?! How are you gonna see her then?! We're all we have! I can't have you out of my life now!” Alphonse spoke.
Ed sighed. “Settle down, you'll wake the baby.”
“Brother!” he squealed like a child. “Don't act so casual! I can't have you leave! Just don't do it-”
“Quiet Al…”
“Don't do it or-”
“I said QUIET!” exclaimed Edward swiping his hand to the side to silence him. “How did you feel when Mom died?! You wanted her back, didn't you?!”
“Yeah, but I-”
“Enough,” He said, “It is what it is and there's nothing you can do to change it.”
Alphonse sighed and walked out of the room, crying along the way. Edward sat on the bed beside Kate and held her cold stiff hand. “Don't worry, dearest,” he said gripping her hand firmly, “I'm going to bring you back…”
